I was looking at the G43 (Huge Glock fanboy) and was at our LGS filling out paperwork for one... then asked to see a Springfield Hellcat on a whim... QUICKLY snatched it up! Fit my hand better, comes with a compact AND extended mag, almost double the mag capacity, has a light rail and far superior sights (in my opinion). Been carrying it ever since and do not wish for a second I had stuck to the G43.

The chance for damage / loss increases with the cost of the radio - I'm convinced of this. I've never lost or physically damaged a Baofeng. I've had them break, but that's just the nature of a cheap radio. I bought a vx-6r and EVERY TIME I've taken it out, I have to hunt it down!

I EDC a Wouzon KG-UVD1P with the battery eliminator cig. lighter cord in my work truck. The program memories will drop and the radio will default to factory if left unpowered for too long. I already carry a knife and flashlight. My wife carries the cell phone. Don't know that I'd have much use for a HT. But if I drove out in the mountains, yeah, I'd carry one.... As for handy talkies, Josh, I would _very much_ like to see you spearhead a drive to have the FCC designate two frequencies, one in UHF and one in VHF, as emergency frequencies. In cases where cell phones become dead. Then, with emergency frequencies, one with an inexpensive radios can easily communicate with helicopter and airplane pilots. These frequencies need not be dedicated, which is the beauty of it. Just designate the frequencies. Let people continue to use them if desired (the more ears on them the better), just designate them for emergency use. If they have to break every 15 minutes for 45 seconds, fine. But we need them, and you have considerable influence. It could save lives...nay, it _would_ save lives. Then carrying radios would make more sense.
@HamRadioCrashCourse2 жыл бұрын
Often carrying a radio isn’t to help yourself, but to help others. For instance using the wilderness protocol. Regarding your request to define a shared frequency. I’m unsure of that is possible or not. It’s a good question.

So now I definitely won't go to any of the meetings. He was only there for the check. He wouldn't help his students. He had 3 favorites and they were the only ones that got help.

FT-60 both transmits and receives 2m and 70 cm. No commercial reception, but some extended receive. And it is bulletproof! I have a gait problem, and fall sometimes, and I fell on top of this radio onto the sidewalk while taking a...walk. It got scratched-up fairly badly, but still works fine. When I still had a job, I bought four of these, as they were very inexpensive, and the later ones even came with their own drop-in chargers! (Lost 2, 1 in living room, 1 in bedroom). You really cannot go wrong with this radio. My one complaint is that some things are too complicated; I have to look at the manual every time I need to block a channel from scan, and I am a nuclear engineer with an IQ of 142, so I doubt if I am the only one who thinks this. Anywho...73, KB5AVP OH, and the AA battery holder, which holds 8 AA cells, lets you xmit with all 5 watts. I always buy the drop-in quick chargers and the AA battery packs, for "just in case".

Do you just load the VHF / UHF Simplex frequencies at the top of your radio, or do you break it out to include the entire group of simplex frequencies for your area? We don't have a ton of traffic on simplex, based on my monitoring around town, but I agree that it should be first on my channel list. Just not sure how far to take that. So, how do you implement that?

Hmm, seems simple enough. So you just take it out the box, charge it, turn it on, put in pocket? No tuning simplex frequencies or loading memories? Me thinks your method maybe too basic.
@lmaoroflcopter3 жыл бұрын
@@HamRadioCrashCourse why do you need to store simplex freqs or program it? It's Everyday Carry. Technically you could skip steps 2 and 3. But no. No you don't need to program memories. You can simply tune to the appropriate frequency whilst you carry it, every day.
@HamRadioCrashCourse3 жыл бұрын
@@lmaoroflcopter That is illogical for the number of repeaters or frequencies one person may want to operate. Further, remembering multiple frequencies, offsets and tones of a given repeater seems like a pointless burden someone some simply wanting to EDC their radio. And to reply now to an obvious response you may have. Multiple repeaters and simplex frequencies may be needed for multiple nets and meet-ups a person would want to participate in a given week.
@lmaoroflcopter3 жыл бұрын
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I feel that you're overcomplicating matters regarding EDC. One does not *need* to program any repeaters or simplex frequencies in order to EDC it. Being completely straight with you now, those activities would fall under basic operation of the radio which i'd suggest is probably something one should be familiar with prior to lugging a HT around with them.
