Another thing to know is that when you put your wav files in a zip folder, you can potentially save up to 60% (or maybe more) on the space the stems take. So it will be much quicker to send to someone for mixing.

i would recommend sending both WET and DRY tracks to your engineer. while there are engineers more on the purist side (like yourself) there are also a lot (especially in non-acoustic music) that prefer keeping the vibe/feel of the song as it was while the artist/producer was working on it. if there's an FX that's too heavy they'll usually use the dry vocal and try and recreate it while keeping it under control. personally most engineers i know like wet stems over dry ones cause they don't have to guess where the artists is trying to take the track. you can send both dry and wet but if you have doubts, send a reference to them and ask them if they want either or both.

Joe laughed about that mistake with the prefixes. I think it is not funny. It's a pain in the ass and should have been fixed since long time. ( To be honest this should have never happened because overwriting user settings is a nogo,) Presonus is so proud of the workflow and in this part of the program it sucks because some of the user settings are not stored but permanently overwritten. I never want a prefix and this choice whether or not has to be a global user's default setting. Each setting in this window has to be stored as a setting that belongs to this specific song. And if I have to export the stems a second time I have to delete the files manually instead of having the option to overwrite or create the files with a unique name. That options are international standard since decades. The fact that S1 permanently overwrites user settings is also a problem when exporting songs and it has become worse since 5.4 by the new option to export songs in different formats at once. As much as I like to work with S1 : this is ....

The filename prefix and export location is totally primitive. We should be able to have a blank file name prefix instead of space character as it sometimes causes problems in order of tracks while importing into pro tools. And the storage location for some reason always defaults to studio one's internal folder. We should be able to default it into another folder once and for all

Presonus REALLY needs to put accurate information in the manual (or info view) about "Export Stems" for example, Exporting Tracks as stems as shown in this video actually exports the Track along with any downstream bus processing as individual tracks. It also includes any effect sends on the tracks. I would expect an "export tracks" command to export what is happening AT THE TRACK level in the DAW, not the soloed track at the MASTER BUS level. I actually have had to create a document to remind me what is included in "bounce to new track" "mix down selection" "export tracks" "export channels" etc.

I’m looking all over to find out how to also send effects but on their own independent track. For instance, the “grey area” where there’s slap delay on the guitar. Rather than having to decide to include it on the track or not, How about the delay being on its own track? Nobody shows an example of when it’s good to use “export channels”. So far, everyone from wavy wave to help me Devan is only showing how to export raw tracks dry. Some show how to export with the effects baked into the track but not independent of the track. (Ex: Mixer wants to get your mix with your effects included but with the option to build on them, use them, or not use them at all.) in that case, how would that be done? I’m thinking it has something to do with the channel exports. I’ll do some experiments but I was thinking that would make a pretty good video.

SO you could say use DI straight from the guitar, post effects post amp nice if the amp has DI built in etc I know this might sound crazy but lets say you are using a cheap amp combo your room acoustics are not great you preamp is useless, DI eliminates these issues as its a straight line signal into your interface then you can add your effects amps speakers etc later.

The other engineer needs to know so it will be easier. Sometimes I open a new session and I tell it not to follow the tempo and that session sent to me will work fine but if any additional work is needed like adding echo on time it will not echo correctly if you use the tap tempo steps. So always leave notes for the next engineer and send certain sounds flat but special sounds that needed a flange or reverb attack (etc) export out it as an extra channel with effects on.

A few problems with export in S1 and I discovered thus some while ago, when I first started using S1. As far as the accepted standard for record labels and mix engineers. 1. Export stems as you show it uses the mixer to bounce down all the track inc the fader volume!! This is wrong 2. These are not “stems” they are the multitrack masters or whatever you want to call them but basically raw audio, stems are sub mixes of song parts, eg drums, keys etc 3. Pro Tools & Logic can export files without disabling anything as it doesn’t use the mixer because of this it exports in a tenth of the time of S1 4. Exporting master files for record labels or mix engineers etc has been done for many years, it’s a proven method & often a contractual requirement , I can’t understand why Presonus have made this so confusing, they seem to have mixed up exporting “stems” with master raw audio.. 5. The best way of exporting in S1 which I found out by accident as it’s not in the manual is to drag the files out of the project as you show Joe, this doesn’t include the fader volume however it’s still takes a ridiculous amount of time in comparison to other DAWs like Pro Tools & Logic, I presume because it’s still using the mixer! It shouldn’t, the raw audio export should be no different to the recorded material itself, just like it would be on any other recorded medium like tape.
