I'm Catholic. When arguments start with non-Catholic brethren, I say 2 things: 1. If we say we're Christians and we're arguing, that's not coming from God. Division comes from the devil. 2. Let's agree to disagree rather than argue, and lets focus on the truth that I love Jesus, and you love Jesus.

Protestants tend to be ignorant and arrogant. Bad combo. They want the fight because, I think, in the cold hard light of early morning they know we're right. I never fight with them. Like other segments of the US population, they don't recognize facts or history, so it's pointless I just tell them that I'll pray for them and change the subject.

That's not very simple, do you know how many signals your brain has to send for you to do that, and the micro movements that are included in such a motion? Not to forget all the signals the computer has to go through to process that and send it over to the youtube database that has to receive it and make it appear to the entire world. And not to for get the Holy Spirit that stretches down from heaven and leads you to do it, initiated and governed by the very creator of the universe himself.

One thing I learned recently is, when faced with temptation, it's not enough to say to my self "OK, I've got this" and try to overcome temptation with my own willpower. because no matter how much I love the Lord, relying on myself always led to failure. I finally realized that it's OK to literally cry out to the Lord for His strength and His power to help me there and then. Kind of like calling out to Daddy with your arms raised high for him to pick you up. And you can know that you know that He always will. Depending on HIM instead of self...a paradigm shift for me
@ricardoo68247 жыл бұрын
Elaine Pace-Prior Had a very similar experience as well ! It's never enough to think YOU can overcome things. But if you rely that Christ is in you, and you in Christ, anything is possible. Because he conquered death, as well as sin. If you're struggling with a specific sin, it will boil down to how much faith you have in Christ, that you won't be conquered by such sin. By yourself you're not capable to do anything. In believing in Christ, and you yourself believing you will not fall into sin, because Christ is within you and he is above all, will mirror that of ill people touching the cloth of Jesus, and when they were cured Jesus said to them: "your faith has cured you."

And all the conversation that the church had paid and rightfully so to its victims is enough? Are you serious? And if 2% (which is still a lot) have tarnished the name of the priesthood that does not make the rest of the priests the same. They're just as much imans and sheiks, judges, police, teachers, your uncle bobs etc Who have done exactly the same and perhaps even worse. You hit this one outa the park, Fr Mike. Your reference to Jason & the argonauts reminded me of patrol in Ramadi, Iraq back in 05-06. The local Imams preached songs and sermons from their minaret towers over loudspeakers five times a day & night. They would sometimes cooperate with Al Quaeda and slip messages to insurgents in with their preaching (in Arabic, of course). For a time, the beginning of our Mass coincided with their call to prayer. For a few brief moments each week, we all sang our entrance antiphon with extra gusto, and drowned them out. I'm pretty sure God chuckled at us:)

I find this so beautiful that my eyes well up with tears. I am 19 and so in love with God and I know and feel he has a vast, ginormous amount of love for us. I face temptation every day, some days are easier and some days are very, very hard. Hearing this meditation made me realize and place it in perspective me because it is paralleled and illustrated by great literature from Homer. It's so great and true, we can prevent, avoid, face and triumph through temptation by conscious mental restraint or the contemplation of love and truth. This quarantine I learned that writing on the Notes app on my computer, consecrating myself to Virgin Mary for the day, recognizing my weakness and asking for strength to face them, as I type, has helped me more than you know. I will continue to do it and recommend all of you who need reassurance, to do this as well. God bless.

Great wisdom Fr Mike. Thank you. Bishop Sheen said that we have to crowd evil out as opposed to trying to drive it out. If we fall, the important thing is that we get up immediately. Even if we find we’re confessing the same sin, God never tired of forgiving us, we just get tired of asking for forgiveness, as Pope Francis told us. And maybe sleep on the floor after a fall. A few nights of that could cure a few coughs. Or maybe a cold shower!! If we get discouraged at our falls that can be a sign of pride and self love. Keep up the good work Fr Mike.

For the past ten years I felt like God didn't care about me. I developed schizoaffective disorder while working on my Master's degree. I hid it from everyone. I tried to kill myself three times. I have been locked up for five years in a behavioral unit...not jail. I felt hated by God. I have met a good pastor at a first Christian Church. I have been mending my relationship with God. I still consider myself Catholic, but I went to the only church I could find a ride to. I feel now like God didn't want me to be an accountant. I now want to help the community that has given me so much. I just want to know what you think is my next step.

Prayer helps me feel love...not always, but often enough. The similarity of Ulysses tied to the mast and Christ nailed to the Cross gave me something to think about.

Don't forget the sincere confess and after, the Communion (in a state of grace, so much important) ; go to mass on weekdays if you have the time, with all your heart. Pray one rosary per day, minimum 5 misteries. At each bad thought, or temptation, say with your heart "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.", I insist : at EACH temptation. Have confidence, this is very important. You will see that you will be deliberate about these things. Detach yourself from the things of the Earth, always have God with you, put Him in all your actions of the day, feel His Presence and always stay with Him. At the beginning it is not easy, but pray to move forward on the Path, Jesus will guide you. I assure you that I was before a depraved one, but thank God, when I am very close to Him, the temptation hardly exists any more for me. But, as soon as I relax things, the temptations return immediately; impure thoughts, discouragement, despair, carelessness ... Don't forget this comment;)

Ulysses is from a novel of the same name by James Joyce and a poem by Tennyson.

Actually Fr. Mike is correct. Ullyses is the Latin name for Odysseus, which is Greek. They are the same person. As an Rnglish teacher you can verify this, novel by James Joyce notwithstanding. Give me a thumbs up when you do.

The loving gaze of God helps us overcome temptation but one has to endure this gaze until the heart melts and so with the temptation.
