I push the door to my job interview open with my foot, not wanting to even show the place any respect. I am wearing sunglasses and an untucked and unbuttoned suit. I sit down in the chair and the interviewer has a bewildered look in his eyes, I can sense his fear and intimidation in him. He tries to ask the first question, but all he can get out is "what is your biggest weakne-" before I lean over, put my finger over his lips and whisper "shhhhhh." I lean back, hands behind my head, in my chair, and put my feet up on his desk as I kick away his nametag onto the floor. I can see him trembling, and I seize moment, "enough about me," I sit up and look him dead in the eyes, "why should I work for you?" The interviewer, terrified but desperate, asks "how much money can we pay you?" I smirk, lift my sunglasses up and tell him "I'm not in it for the money" and get up, knocking the chair over in the process, which he immediately rushes to pick up. When he looks up to see what I'm doing next, he finds I'm gone, on my way to my next job interview.

Boring 5-year answer! When I got interviewed for a retail job and my [future] boss asked me the question that and I just stared at him never releasing eye contact and said: "Your chair looks pretty comfortable". He laughed, I laughed the other interviewer laughed. He hired me on the spot.
Here's a job interview story of mine: As a Mariano's was opening in my town, I thought it would be smart to try out for a job there. Only probable was that I had to take the same interview 5 times as they kept loosing literally all my information. After the 5th interview I was so fed up that in the Mariano's parking lot I called up the restaurant my friend worked at and his boss interviewed me then and there over the phone. I got a job as a cook immediately. It was a clean and very nice small place too, not fast food, and all they wanted was a state food handling licence and to know if I was a good cook. They even allowed me to work extra as both a dishwasher at another location that needed me for a while, as well as a busboy at the main. Worked there for two years until they closed my location due to bankruptcy sadly. (Covid). Also, yes, Mariano's lost my information again, so I was happy I took that other job.

Something I learned basically as soon as I interviewed outside my current job living in a state that doesn't prevent questions of what you currently make, was being willing to just walk away if they asked me that question again or gave me conditional offer of employment and asked me that and refused to take: I don't find my current salary relevant to this conversation, what is more relevant is how my skills match up to your role or something to that effect. It is always a trap to give them your true current salary.

Wow! Actually so insightful. As someone who has done interviews for 5 years (as the interviewer). This man spits facts. I did however just get a job where I asked "I've spent 45 minutes selling myself, let me know why I should be a part of your team." The qualifications part, was spot on. Never get anyone who has all of them. Also sometimes used to let people know why they were unsuccessful if you really don't have one "oh, you didn't meet the 3 years of experience."

This really gave me a push in the right direction. Thanks a lot.

A note on the minimums when it comes to experience, he is right on with the "apply anyways" mentality, just make sure you read up on the company and position, then figure out what traditional job experience for that position and field might look like and figure out what skills and experiences someone might take away from the traditional experience, last, you want to look at what you have done and figure out a way to show how you have those same skills or something closely related that makes you just as fit to do the job. You also want to have some idea of what kind of industries and fields you want to work in and then also have an idea of what those jobs generally look for, that way you know long before you ever apply and you can slowly integrate small things into your life that make a better fit for the future job.

The number of years experience thing is crazy and *BECAUSE* of this video I applied for a job which was asking for 10 *YEARS* of experience in the field. I had just graduated and so considered college to be potentially 4 years experience so applied anyway. After a lengthy interview process and many calls I was made an offer despite not having the experience they asked for. I didn't take the job but if anyone is looking for employment do NOT be deterred by an experience requirement.
@mystereoheart25792 жыл бұрын
With regards to "free labor" - I think the difference is that, in your example, you are the one OFFERING to create the free video, as opposed to a streamer who is ASKING for an unpaid "art test". That makes a big difference IMO. It's like going on a date with someone and offering to pay for dinner vs. going on a date with someone who asks *you* to pay for dinner. The former is a gesture of goodwill, and the latter is a red flag. I've never had a good experience with a client who asked for free labor. But I've had many good experiences during interviews where I came into the discussion with a proof of concept for us to discuss. Plus, even if you don't get the job, you'll still have a portfolio piece you can use to show in future interviews, which is still a net positive.
