I use the laser cannon to break open the caches, it only takes a quarter of a second and doesn't blow up the fire containers.

It's a perk that you equip when choosing your weapons. Every time you inject a stim, it increases your running speed and allows you to endure hits a bit better for a short period of time, which is why it turns yellow. Similarly, if another teammate equips it, you will also receive that effect.

Yeah it's called the Experimental Infusion perk, it's acquired through the Viper Commando's warbond
