Cool Video! I have a 29 gallon with a few floating plants and I have a few questions. Where did you get your starter culture? I was going to catch some wild ones. Also do you recommend dry yeast? I noticed they sell it at Walmart. Do you a specific ratio of yeast and spirulina powder?

Great information most people don’t go this in depth! Love the live plants in their tub, do you think it helps keep them alive? Also gorgeous fisheys and tanks!

Thank you very much- no the plants just get in the way but tell me about the water parameters- since hornwort can grow very quickly with a lot of nitrates in the water

I have a bunch of eggs to culture. It's been awhile since I cultured some. I have rather big tanks, and was surprised that I have daphnia still in my tanks. I found some in my filters and at the bottom of the tank. It's been MANY months since I added them. Strictly as a food source, but some have found a way to survive. Even in crystal clear tanks.

Yea you know I had tried to do this but my aquariums are so loaded with guppies or endlers that they never have had the chance. I have left small colonies in a few uninhabited 5 gallons without food for months at a time and also there will always remain a small amount without this type of feeding.

This is an amazing set up. Thanks for sharing! What temperature range can daphnia handle? I want to do an outside tub like this with a heater. How many gallon is that tub and how much water do you change weekly?
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies 3 жыл бұрын
Yo thank you- You know I dont use a heater at all and I keep my house thermostat around 72-75°F (guesstimate water temp stays between 70-75). I think the tub is about 40 gallons filled the way I have it in video -50 gallons roughly if filled to the top. Ive read that daphnia can do much cooler temps which wouldn't surprise me considering how remarkable they are, but have also seen that they flourish in most of Asia where its also very warm weather. I change the water about once a week ~50-70%. Changing the water weekly will definitely compensate for any overfeeding and save you from a crash. And when they crash- make sure to not throw them all out- if you catch the crash early enough and strain the water for the "bodies" and mulm on the bottom back into a new fresh water,, sometimes they literally come back to life as well as all the eggs they leave on the bottom - very incredible species.

tbh i feel like alot of the plants die off from the bakers yeast and / or hair algae needs to be controlled. In the end they all have some duckweed on top that has to be cleared weekly so i dont think it hurts them at all.

Thanks for the great video! Very informative. I've heard that some people are adding soy protein in the food mix. I don't know if it's any good tho. I've been trying so hard to keep my moina running but first culture crashed after 1 month. Second culture cushed second day. Tomorrow I'm starting 3rd one. If i understood right, 1 cup of water 1 tsp spirulina, and 1 tsp yeast correct? Do you filter the mix when adding to the container? Or just spray it directly even if you get some (un-disolved) powder in the feed? Lastly are we supposed to clean the bottom of the tank/container from mulm when doing water Change?
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies Жыл бұрын
Yea - its tough- they crash. You have to change the water and feed just perfect and even then sometimes , who knows what happened. Get em while their hot and try to keep backups always is the only advice I can give. I wouldnt feel too bad about crashing them, its literally part of their life cycle and how they drop eggs vs live birth tells us how well we are doing.

I dont use any air at all. I think if I had a larger container without any plants I would use air - but ive done just fine without. I use air for brine shrimp but not daphnia.

I have a question and I hope I'm not too late asking, how do you do water changes without sucking up or scooping up any daphnia, I currently have a baby snail takeover in a lot of my tanks and it forces me to use cheesecloth or gauze on the end of a gravel vac so I'm not picking a hundred dirt sized snails out of each bucket, I just got some daphnia for two tanks one to culture, and one to feed on a suspended algae bloom, I'm curious how I'll do water changes now without disturbing the daphnia??????
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies Жыл бұрын
I put a fish net over the intake of the gravel cleaner with a rubber band or hair tie and keep the hose close to the ground level of the aquarium. And I use the thicker mesh net, like the white one that isnt as see through.

hi can i ask what guppies are those,i have many but idk what their line is
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies Жыл бұрын
Yo! So the guppies in this video were the first generation of a cross between a 1/10000 staeck endler and a meijin li double swordtail line that i called "starburst swordtail guppies" which I then crossed again with some albinos and turned the line white purple pink and even this metallic chromatic purple phenotype. Its pretty cool how many of us can be doing the same breeding practices and end up with very similar results in different parts of the world.

@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies
@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies 3 жыл бұрын
Add 1 teaspoon of bakers yeast to 4-12oz of water in a water bottle - close the lid - mix it up for 30 seconds and Voila. pour it in the water. Also the amount you feed depends totally on the amount of daphnia you have to start. if you have 100 daphnia start with smaller amounts of yeast and take note of how long it takes them to clear the water. once you have a substantial mass of daphnia begin to increase the amount of yeast you mix.

Yea you know Ive read a lot about it but I just don't seem to have that issue.
@Tomjarr1
@Tomjarr1 2 жыл бұрын
How would cyclops get in the tank? Reason why I'm asking is because my daphnia tank crashed last week for the first time because I found thousands of cyclops in my tank. I keep my tank indoors. I talked to a guy who culture's daphnia and he said it came from the yeast I was feeding them. I find that hard to believe.
@signupisannoying
@signupisannoying 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tomjarr1 For me I got cyclops because I got my daphnia from a lake. But I managed to get a small colony of daphnia without cyclops now. I did it by transferring just 4 pregnant daphnias to a clean container. I'm also thinking of doing a "clean restart" from time to time by using a container that I know has no cyclops for sure, and then just transfer few daphnia over.
