This has to be the VERY BEST KZbin video on applying roofing felt. As an 18 year old, I built and refurbished many felt lined roofs, now in my 60s, I just wanted to check what's changed. Thank you so much for posting this How To video. Many useful tips that I'd half forgotten. These days I'm a training consultant, and have to say you have exceptional training skills 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏

Good tips! Thank you. Never thought of using the granules from a waste shingle. I'm much more of the type that would say, "no one can see it from the street and the birds don't care." But doing it right, like you did, is the right way to go.

As a total newbie to both woodworking and DIY (and as a bloke who is about to try to build his Wildlife Ranger fiancé a shed!) can I just say what a superb video that was! The hammer marking, the layout, and the corner folds, were genius! It's obvious you have loads of experience, so thank you so much for sharing it with us. Liked and Subscribed, thank you :)

Very good. Key tip here is sorting the roof felt before roof goes on. Most people will buy a shed which hasn't been thought through that much. I got one of those and then put bitumen tar on all nails through the felt. Works great. No leaks since. It is expensive but bitumen tar is actually very cheap when you work it out.

Top tip - rather than letting the felt over hang on the edges, allow enough to double over the felt under itself, be careful not to crack it, it produces a little loop of felt then use the wooden trim or nails to hold it, this time your going through two layers of felt that reinforces the edge (no need for wooden trim that rots quickly) and produces a natural drip edge. Beach huts that get pounded by the sea are often done this way.
@TheMrjoehughes
@TheMrjoehughes Жыл бұрын
I can see the logic but does it really differ from just nailing into the fancier board ? What happens when the felt on the front rots and then the felt underneath the loop doesn’t ? I can see it being a mess when this happens ? I personally think applying something like a thick rubber or bitumen liquid to the felt is a good solution for making solid the roof
@Exol987
@Exol987 Жыл бұрын
Warm hot days and then cold weather can make the roof not waterproof when nailing on the utter top, unprotected. The material will expand and contract and then may give glitches around the nails?

So I have a Playhouse and I can't get to the Back Wall or one side so pre felting the the 2 x 8ft by 3.5ft Plywood seems an option. You clearly secure the roof from the inside what how did you fix the sheets?.
@chazshier

Have you suffered from condensation dropping off the inside off that roof and, ultimately, ice freezing on the inside? I have a shed constructed in the same way and I'm experiencing that very problem in this cold weather

Could you give me a link to the felt you are using in this project as I am thinking about building a sloped roof over an existing flat roof which has leaked and caused a large amount of damage and damp. Would adhesive work as well to glue the sheets down so everything is completely sealed to the roof ?

1. any suggestions to finding a leak through the felt? having a major headache trying to find where its coming through as there are no rips( although the suggestions from james a makes me wonder if its through the nails 2. also can recommend a good felt or what to look for in a good felt because a lot of what i find at local diy is really poor quality and doesn't last the so called guaranteed number of years..

When I've worked on projects down the yard, things have been a struggle to get hold of, or gone up about 20%. You'll see on an upcoming build, we had to scramble for the same wood to get a job done and really sought through the damaged pieces carefully for the trim bits, etc - ie, save the best stuff for the important parts.

Felted a few in my time.Never wasted it with 2 foot overlap.Whats the need for that ?
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Жыл бұрын
Because 2 rolls would be shy on this particular shed and when it's a busy shed business, why waste time making extra cuts to try save maybe a foot from each strip that's probably only good for rabbit hutches (which they barely make)?

Some good tips , though the only thing i wouldn't of done is to put nails in the over lap thats exposed ! so called professional shed builder did that when building mine on site , 2-3 years on the roof is now like a culender 😡 and now having to recover it , but this time i've ive laid a waterproof felt underlay on it first 👌 belt & braces approach 😉 ,have enjoyed your videos 👍 thanks, Tartan Sparky

I've not seen felting in my part of the world. Is it 100% waterproof or does it shed water for so long then starts to reach a saturating point? My understanding of felt is that whilst it resists water, it will eventually leak through.

If love to say that this is all good but because I work in construction and what I have to say is you shouldn't lay felt, it needs to be torched on, if you torched it on all the "reference marks" made would be completely and utterly irrelevant. Not to mention you roled am entire strip over another for no apparent reason other to make a drip edge. Complete waste of felt. All the nails you put in the roof, that's holes that cause leaks, not along the sides, but ontop. It should have all been torched on and would have lasted another 30 to 50 years with no leakages, no holes and cost less. Using a mastic gun as "bitumen" is wild
