As spring time has arrived fertilizing your lawns is a key step next to mowing. If you have t already get some fertilizer down on the ground. Whether your applying at a 1/2 or 3/4 lb rate per 1,000 sqft is key to a successful green lawn.

Thanks so much for your videos, Chris! I've been applying ~1.3 lb. 30-0-10 to ~500 sq. ft. I'm in the transition zone and am in a similar situation as your clients where I wasn't able to get rid of all my perennial rye last year when I laid down overseeded hybrid Bermuda sod in the beginning of the year. Already did my first scalp of the season but was interested to hear more about your strategy of applying nitrogen to push growth of and mow out your rye. Would it work for pretty established perennial rye or just encourage it more? (I haven't been too keen to spray the rye out and have been mostly trying to hand-weed/mow it out since my small lawn is relatively small.)

Thanks for watching! So being in the translation zone and depending on your climate that rye just might survive. In the heat of the summer if y’all get hot enough that rye will die back and allow the Bermuda to consume the lawn. Without spraying and if your desired grass type is Bermuda keep mowing low as often as possible.

Thanks! I'm assuming you'd recommend the extra nitrogen application rate for spring similar to the 1lb/1000sq ft you did in the video to push growth of the rye?

In this video I’m using an extreme high rate to push the remaining RYE. per my soil test I actually don’t “need” to apply anything. But for initial spring applications and without a soil test I would recommend an .75lb rate of an equal balanced Fert such as a 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 or similar.

Sorry, my last comment was a bit ambiguous (edited for clarity) but I was asking mainly from the perspective of trying to address the rye. It's a strategy I personally haven't heard of since ppl usually recommend cutting back on apps like water and fertilizer to stress the rye so I'm very interested to try your approach! 😄 I'm just hoping it doesn't strengthen the perennial rye instead so sounds like I would have to pair it with lots of low mowing.

Gotcha, well if we remove the Rye grass aspect we will still need or want to Fertilize our Bermuda lawns to increase that growth before the heat of the summer. It’s a transition from maintaining a northern grass type back to a southern grass type so all applications and watering would resume as usual. Not necessarily decrease to remove an undesired grass type. (Rye)

I put a link in the description and locally we can get from the Eastside Nursery. Would recommend applying at the low rate with this product if you’re new to it.
