Back in 1978 when my youngest daughter got a minor scrape on her wrist at school (on a Thursday), I didn’t think anything of it because back then I didn’t realize schools don’t do anything for stuff like that. When I touched her arm on Sunday she screamed. Looking at it she had a red line going up her arm to a sac in her arm pit. The small town we lived in didn’t have a regular MD so I went down the hill to a neighbor who had a phone and called the local ‘hippie’ doctor who told me to put comfrey on it and bring her in in the morning if it was still a problem. I had no idea what comfrey was but the neighbor grew it for his rabbits and gave me several leaves. Once home, not knowing what else to do, I put a few leaves on the scrap and secured it with gauze. Every hour I took the blackened leaves off and put fresh ones on, putting all the rest on when she went to bed. The next morning the red line and sac were completely gone, the comfrey had pulled out all the poison. I have grown comfrey everywhere I’ve lived since then.

W O W. I guess comphrey is a natural antibiotic then. Wasn't poison in her, but tiny microscopic plants-most common killer is Staphylococcus Aureus bacterium. The red line is called sepsis, and when the red line reaches your heart you die. I guess Staph hates comphrey!

New to your channel and enjoy your calm demeanor and straight to the point approach. I’m realizing that the garden channels I watch are “entertainment gardening” with all the frills and dramatics. I just need the information. (I can watch tv for the frills and dramatics.) Keep up the good work.

Awesome advice. I Just made a 50 gallon trash can worth of comfrey tea with an air stone. I added in some worm castings and molasses. Not sure if it makes the tea better but We will see.

Most soils in the US have sufficient phosphate for plants, so I'm not sure about the bloom fertilizers, may just be causing pollution. Heavy fruiting plants may change that though, not sure

Yeah, I don't think the nitrogen rule is universal. From what I've read to grow corn you have to continue using nitrogen and tons of it. But what you said is very informative for the majority of plants

Here's the real truth about fertilizers. Forget about all this 10-10-10, or 12-6-8 and everything else in between. Also forget about all these plant specific, or bloom specific fertilizers, because most of them have the exact same ingredients in them. These fertilizer companies and corporations have teams of people who come up with ideas, and sales gimmicks trying to get people to buy their products. Before you even think about fertilizers, you need to go to your local extension office and get your soil tested. They will tell you if your soul is low on any nutrients, and the truth is that most soils in the U.S. have plenty of everything your plants need, unless you live in a desert climates, or your soil has been damaged, or contaminated in some way. Our soil usually has more then enough of the P and K, or Potassium and Phosphorus and all he minerals and salts and metals and other micro nutrients that our garden plants will ever need, and that's the truth. The only thing that our gardens sometimes struggle to produce enough of is Nitrogen, and specially for nitrogen hungry stuff like say Corn. So here's what I do, at the end of every growing season, I clean out my chicken coop and spread out about an inch and a half, to two inches of chicken manuer over my growing area, which will replace pretty much everything that was taken out during growing season. That chicken manuer will break down and get rained on and sun beaten and will compost and feed the soil microbiology all the through the fall and winter, and they will be ready to go next gardening season. I will purchase one single type of fertilizer that's high Nitrogen and low everything else like a 3-2-1 or a 5- 3-2 or something similar. After each plant is transplanted into the garden, I will give it a good initial shot of Nitrogen to give it a good Kickstart, and maybe one more shot when I first see flower buds, but other then that I give them nothing but water, unless something looks unhappy, or unhealthy, then maybe I will give it a low dose to see if it pulls out of it. Gardening is supposed to be about free, cheap food, and being self sufficient, yet people are spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars every year on all these pointless fertilizers and special, magical potting soils, and other junk that they don't even need. Now, if your soil test shows that your soil is lacking in something, then you can go find something that has that in it and add that along with your nitrogen and you will be fine. Don't over complicate gardening people, it's not rocket science. Truth is, your not even growing anything, nature and your soul microbiology is doing all the real work, and they know what their doing, so get out of they way, and let them do it.
