Aphids can be quite destructive on roses, especially when we let the infestation become too large in our rose gardens. Majority of aphids are plant specific, they feed on selected plants. Rosarians are "blessed" with rose aphid which target only roses. In this video I am explaining IPM (integrated pest management) approach to gardening, life cycle of aphids (know your enemy) and ways to control them in our beautiful gardens.

I have one rose bush and I'm trying to take care of it very well! When you said you are lucky you don't have many roses I snorted! Thanks for the video, I'm hoping the soapy water will be enough until the predators move in.

Thank you, Olga, for such an informative video. I also have parrots visiting my garden that love to feast on the tender juicy new shoots and buds of my roses, especially if the new growth is reddish in colour. Hopefully they eat the aphids, too! You can attract lady birds (lady bugs) into your garden by growing herbs like dill, fennel coriander, angelica and chives. They also are attracted to flowers like calendula, sweet alyssum, sun flowers, marigolds, cosmos, achillea (yarrow), echinacea (coneflowers) and even dandelions. They seem to particularly like white and yellow flowers. You could even plant decoy plants like nasturtiums, which aphids love, to draw them away from your roses. I have tried this in my garden. Planting a diverse range of plants is one of the healthiest things we can do for our gardens. Lady birds also like to visit gardens that are well watered or that have a water source for them as they get very thirsty.

Very timely video for me as I have started to get a bit worried with the amount of aphids I’m seeing. I had been squishing them with my fingers (my fingers started turning yellow 😅) but that is kind of gross. I shall try insecticidal soap next. If that doesn’t do it they will for sure be done for when my systematic arrives for the sawfly larvae.

Oh, I don't like to squish them either. I kind of knock them off between my palms. Yes, I keep my insecticidal soap handy in my small garden shed. Happy gardening!

A systemic will kill everything that feeds on the nectar of roses too such as beneficial insects. Sawfly larvae is very easy to control with Captain Jack's, dish soap spray, or even easier, just going around for a few minutes and collecting them yourself off the leaves. Plants that are attracting a huge number of insects are a sign of a very stressed plant, such as a plant that is unable to cool itself because of lack of water or mulch.

This video makes me feel a bit better…. Thanks for ur content. ❤。all my roses ( 25 of them ) have aphids , among other shrubs … I used to spray them. But now my hands and fingers do the job to control these bugs . If the spraying water method is used, what happens if the aphids land on other plants ? ( my small garden is densely planted with lots of shrubs and perineal plants ) thanks again

Hi, if aphids fall on another rose and live, they will have what to eat. A different plant might not support them.

We get lots of roseslug sawfly damage on our rose foliage in early spring leaving the plants looking pretty unsightly :( Do you have any recommendations for keeping roseslug sawfly away? Thanks in advance!

I wonder if water spray method will contribute to black spot or Powderly mildew.
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
Yes, that is for sure. With all that watering we might end up with aphids free rose and full of black spot. Personally, I would choose aphids.

thank you for your video. i usually squish them, but I do have lots of ants. Do you have any advise, how to get rid of the ants- because I‘can‘t see any nest-I suppose they are living underground! Í’m gardening organically.

There are plenty of recipes on KZbin here. One I like is from Rose Valley Farm, you mix 1 teaspoon of Borox with 3 teaspoon of sugar, add a bit of water for it to be syrupy like. Place it near the colony of ants in some sort of plastic container (closed one) with holes for ants to get to it, but not kids, pets... Hope it helps.

Hello Olga! Unfortunately, US and Canadian laws differ concerning pesticides. Neem oil in now illegal in Canada and possibly restricted to licensed applicators. It's prohibited to use and promote since it's been assigned to a class of toxic (organic) pesticides, supposedly harmful to bees and rabbits...just to name a few. How they come up with these facts is beyond me. Canada has banned a plethora of pesticidal, insecticidal and systemic products that had once been available to home gardeners within the last 16 years. Ortho Bug B Gone is a pyrethroid based insecticide currently available. It has an oil base to the solution, effectively killing aphids on contact. Experimenting with diluted essential oils is yet another option. Having said that, I enjoy your channel; the way you present yourself and your passion for roses. You ARE the Lady of Shallott, lol. 🌹🌱

Those darn ants FARM aphids for that honeydew! Ants are resilient beyond belief. Must give them credit for how hard they work, but they drive me crazy. I remove aphids... they bring them back.
