Make a video using your chucks against a practice dummy. This way you can see what happens to the chucks after making contact. Also you can show how to recover after making the hit. The chucks will bounce of off the opponent after striking. You must no what to expect and how to recover.

Actually an nunchaku could be an ok, less than lethal weapon, for a teen who can't really carry something better and who happens to lives in a country in which it is not a felony to own this. Have in mind that you won't find a combat appropiate nunchaku comercially. The length of the sticks should go from the knuckles to half an inch beyond the tip of the elbow and should be thicker than just 1 inch but with 2 inches they would be to cumbersome to wield properly. But the weak spot is the joint between chain and stick, this swivel joints break randomly after some use, a forged brace must be used. Finally the chain should be only around 4 links long, the width of a thick wrist from ulna tip to the radius. The idea is that if the user catches the attackers forearm when the sticks are pushed like shears it should cause pain.
