Totally not clear about 10' rule. The distance between chimney itself and nearest roof point will change depending on how high you take a point on chimney wall. So, is there any rule at what height of chimney surface we have to take a point of measurement?

What if you have it at 4 feet 6 inch's higher then the peak of the roof.

What about when it passes thru the roof? I had this question and cant figure it out “If the chiimney passes through the roof of the house and the slope of the roof is 6:12, how would you find the height of chimney” correct answer was 7’. Thank you

When your are at the ridge line then it should be 3 feet higher not 2 feet. R1003.9 of the ICC code.

Hello, I have flat roof with 6 feet superstructure 10 feet from the chimney. Should I go 2 feet above superstructure?

It's sad to say, but yes that's my interpretation of this building code. However, if I was you, I would contact your local building department for clarification.

This rule will be invalid if there are tall trees around the house. Wind coming over the trees will push down on the chimney.

We don't have that problem where I live, so I couldn't validate that claim. However, it does sound like it would create problems for drafting.

Can't really understand the idea of building the chimney outside the house. Considerable heat loss... I guess some people just want to heat up the garden.

exactly,Well built & insulated it is best inside the house.Outside It would just cool down the gases & cause deposition of exhaust gases.

High efficiency stoves will not loose much heat to the chimney - most of the heat is kept indoors
