There are some tricks to it. One is people will use and old crutch that extends in order to hold the horses jaw up because a horse head that is dead weight when sedated is HEAVY!!! Another method is hanging the rubber from an old tire from the top of their stall with ropes so it stretches to gently lower and raise their head. While Dr. Oakley does hers the manual way, which I prefer, many vets now use an electrical float and lighted camera to check the teeth. The electrical float can be so harsh it has caused horse teeth to crack and have issues and I am very old school in my use of manual tooths. I appreciate the lighted camera as it does show if a dental infection is occurring in the back molars or it shows the level or any cuts/wear on the cheeks so you know the level of the sharp points that need to be taken off. It can identify if food is stuck in a pocket in a tooth for example.

The snippet above is one of the snippets that are useful. this is because, the snippet above teaches us to take care of a horse, one of which is by filing the horse's teeth😁😁✨

Had horses most my life. Some lasting like 23 years and dying of old age. All fat and never had teeth problems. None of the vets that came out every year said or treated any of our horses like this. This must be rare. Hopefully a bunch of idiots dont go out and start filing horse teeth.

Had horses all of my life as well and they passed at ages 32 yrs to 34 yrs. All horses teeth need to be floated every year or every other year. In the old west it's something your farrier did and not your vet. At minimum you can reach in and feel if the upper molars have points of basically sharp edges as they cut into the cheeks and the lower molars get sharp on the inside. The teeth won't fit together to create the grinding surface in order to chew forage properly and you will see them dropping food out of their mouth from grains to grasses and this is a major sign they have teeth not lining up right. This is not rare at all, but so common many boarding stables require it be done yearly, which I find to be too often for the average horse, but I will check yearly no matter what. Incredibly common.

@@blackdandelion5549 Agree 💯 If you don't have the horse's teeth checked, you don't know what's going on with them. They may be fine, but in my experience they need checked once a year and floated as often as necessary. Back in the day, I met a woman who had a horse that was very thin and couldn't figure out why. I suggested having the horse's teeth floated and she told me they had been. Saw her later after she had another vet check them. Her horse had gained weight and looked wonderful in a span of 2-3 months time! She told me that her horse had wave mouth, which I had never heard of. It's a condition where the teeth don't meet properly as the front to back molars have developed a wave where some teeth were lower and others higher. The fix for that is the same, floating. But you first have to know it's there. Now some vets have all sorts of power assisted tools to make floating along with cameras so that they can see inside the whole mouth! Lots of things have changed since I had my last horse.
