Most tank fills are done by weight, same as freon. The bleeder screw can ONLY be used as temporary means if there's no scale or the scale in use has not been calibrated. However, this guy did a nice job on the fill.

Not sure if you mean the old now banned Freon refrigerant , chloro flouro methane I think. No one should deliberately leak out that stuff and it's also worth big bucks since all that exists today is old stock and recycled gas in our western world at least. It was called R12 I think . . In Australia we can run our cars on propane, actually propane butane 50/50 mix . Some of us independently figure out how to illegally refill our domestic n camping cylinders with automotive LPG. Pretty sure the domestic LPG is pure propane though when we buy it as such.

this is how most small tank fills are done... you would have to purge the tank to get an accurate weight as most tanks will have residual propane in them.

I would strongly recommend protective eyeware, liquid propane in the eye instantly freezes the eyeball and could leave you blind or partially sighted.

"Take it to a professional"...LOL 😂 The last two "professionals" I took my tanks to, I ended up showing THEM how to fill my tanks. The so-called "professionals" are usually minimum wage store clerks that can barely pump gasoline into their cars let alone an LP tank. That's been my experience anyway...

In case anyone doesn't know you get a better deal by doing it this way than by going to a store where you exchange your tank. The tank you receive is only like 1/2 or 3/4 full. You think you're getting a full tank and they are pocketing the difference.

all tanks have a float valve inside that stops the fill when it gets full. You need to open the bleeder valve to allow air out or the pressure will build up before it is full.

This is not true. The bleeder valve has a tube to the 20% fill line so you will see liquid when the tank is full. The flow rate of the bleeder valve is dramatically slower than the pump through that hose, so if pressure was an issue, this would not solve it. At least in the state of Texas where I live and fill propane, there is a law stating that we have to fill by weight(using scale) and not by volume(this technique) for anything 99 lb. and under. Otherwise, we'd loose our license to fill.

been working a job that has me filling propane. watched this to double check the procedures and this was exactly as they taught me. As for the guy complaining about PPE in the comments, no idea what they’re on about. Sure it’s cold, but wearing just thin latex gloves is enough for protection. They’ll get frozen brittle and snap if you leave them in front of the bleeder, but you’d really have to be not paying attention to hurt yourself like this.

Hmm, now forty years ago I remember going to hardware store to get 3 kilogram cylinder refilled and it only cooked for twenty minutes . A seventeen year old who didn't have a clue connected it up. I'd been trusting for the filling process done under my observation, paid my money. then stewed over getting ripped off .This kind of short changing happened everywhere and authorities mounted a sting operation in 1989 , and laws got tightened up and new fines and penalties drafted. Everything was free and easy with the LPG cylinders way back and plenty people drove their LPG fueled vehicles with big 100 litre tanks mounted on roof racks .In the good old days it was 8 cents a litre. It's at 80 cents today but tchyn-a can get it from Australia still at maybe 5cents .

The tank ratings in Oz are 80% of full capacity leaving room for expansion and some resulted pressure build up , in New Zealand it's 85% . So it varies in different countries . It's possible to therefore overfill tanks as well as underfill but I believe in most cases it'll probably be an overfill favouring the customer , but not favouring safety according to law makers. I think the tanks are hoop band batch tested to 22 atmosphere in manufacture and hardly ever operate higher than four atmosphere for propane and two atmosphere for propane butane 50/50 mix . To explain the hoop test :- a hoop is placed around the tank and at top rated pressure it mustn't expand such that hoop can't be removed.
