I find Using a handheld led light helps when doing this from different angles , just because the natural light changes during the day in homes. I do the same on walls, I've been caught out sometimes on walls not being prepped right when sunlight comes through.

Would tinting very lightly lightly Aqua Coat help during this application (on primed panels)?

after using Aqua Coat over an already primed plywood, would you then still need to apply a primer over the aqua coat or just the finish coats? TIA

I did 4 coats of aqua coat and it still wasn’t as smooth as MH Ready Patch. Not sure what the long term product will be using the ready patch, but initially it is soo much smoother

Have you ever used plaster to fill the grain? Furniture manufacturers used to fill the grain with plaster and sand it smooth. The plaster became translucent under oil finishes. Me, I've used plaster under oil finishes and under paint. It's cheap, dries fast, and gives a nice smooth surface. Note that I'm referring to plaster, not some type of drywall mud (hot mud, all purpose joint compound, etc.)

What's the difference between Aqua Coat and other wood fillers (DAP, Bondo, Elmer's, etc)?
@ILruffian
@ILruffian 3 жыл бұрын
Easier to spread, designed for the purpose. Most of the other wood fillers are best for larger holes. And Bondo wood filler dries like cement. Not fun to sand.

This is most assuredly a dumb question, but where are the clients wanting caulking ? Is there space between the wood..? Trying to follow. I'm doing cabinets right now for the first time

Get a coat or 2 of primer. Then wet sand the grain away and then you would caulk all black cracks in the wood seams keep a wet rag with you and wipe your finger each bead you wipe(when you lay some caulk down it's called a bead of caulk) and I would lay a bead then wipe a few inches at a time and then clean your finger. Your going to want to keep your beads small as access caulk will be more difficult and sloppy to deal with. Caulking makes the cabinets look more complete it's not necessary....but I would always do so. There's is no reason to float a filler this is adding an extra time consuming process. Again a couple thick coats of high build primer, wet sand, clean and remove dust and contaminates then followed by 2-3 finish coats. Some chemical base paint will flow like glass.....if you use a waterborne product thin it 15-20% and it will flow like glass if sprayed or rolled. If rolled apply in lighter coats with a 4.5" weenie roller 3/8" roller nap......roll all contours first and finish on flat surfaces. It's a time consuming but straightforward. Good luck woman no worries easy stuff 👍 any more questions just ask. Again easy stuff just time consuming.

ON the fronts of most cabinets there is like a fancy little frame border thingy around the edges. Sometimes there is a big gap between the frame border and the main part of the cabinet. It the gap is small the paint will do just fine but sometimes there is a massive gap and if you don't add caulking it might look bad but than you might run into the caulking cracking down the road. So it is one of those things you are dammed if you do dammed if you don't. He has a video on it to he made very recently explaining wether to caulk or not. He explains the good caulking to use too.

No you want to caulk inside the styles of the doors, he has a demonstration photo in this video that will show you exactly where you want to caulk, be very careful when doing this though because I’m order to achieve a factory like finish you need to wipe the caulking clean so it doesn’t gather in the corner, go to your local Sherwin Williams and purchase their top of the line caulking which will always be a little thicker then the cheap brands which will cut down on the mess and give you a better finish, also make sure to keep a clean rag with you at all times and a bucket of warm water which will keep your hands and surfaces as clean as possible, take your time and I’m sure it will come out great.

Why wouldn't you wet sand the grain smooth? Just curious.
@JosephARomo

The grain runs virtually depth wise on oak,so even if you sanded you would be far from a smooth surface

I tried Aquaseal on red oak. 4 coats and you still see the grain after priming and painting. Tedious to apply and really no comparison to just two coats of DAP wood filler or just a runny mix of USG drywall compound with a little wood gliue in it. Two coats of anything else I've tried always completely sealed the red oak. So, no, Aquaseal for pre paint is a waste of money. Maybe if you were to seal some pores in a fancy guitar and plan to cover it in poly, but pre paint it's overpriced and ineffective.

aqua coat vs gorks GoodFilla
@AJF4Me

I just tested those 2 and I am going with GoodFilla. On oak 2 coats of Aquacoat with sanding in between and I still saw grain, 1 coat of GoodFilla completely covered the grain. The only thing is the GoodFilla required more sanding but still took less time and had much better results.
