This video is the complete deal on how to fill in dead spots in St. Augustine. Sounds simple BUT it's the important details on the prep and application that makes the difference. Everybody says to just dump some BK on these spots. Then your yard doesn't react and you have to do it over or your just disappointed in the results after all the work and money spent. Thank you for your presentation. Is the rate of mix 1 bag Black Kow (1 cub f) to 1 bag sand (0.5 cub f) or 1 cub f Black Kow to 1 cub f sand?
@bettercallchadd3 жыл бұрын
1 to 1 is what i sually recommend. But if the area is shady or holds moisture then 1 bag of black kow to two bags of sand will work as well. The sand is cheaper and filling the areas thick is most important. The black kow is expensive, if you are doing many areas or a bigger area then more sand will work just fine!!! I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and support!!!🤙

Will this be a good idea to do around new sod .assuming I'm leaving about 4/5 inches in between new sod and old grass?
@bettercallchadd3 жыл бұрын
This is great to put in the gaps of new sod to help it fill in!! Thanks for the comment and support.

I have an infestation of earth worms in my Houston St. Augustine Lawn (tiny mounds popping up all over less grassed areas). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@bettercallchadd3 жыл бұрын
Are you positive they are worms? It sounds like they could be mole cricket mounds. Look up mole cricket mounds and see if that's what it is.

This was so helpful! Can I use the same mixture if I need to lay fresh sod in Tampa climate? I am trying to avoid having to regrade the entire lawn.
@bettercallchadd3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment!! You absolutely can!!! This would be great mixture to have under fresh sod.

I live in St Augustine and have St Augustine grass lol. I did this last year with BK and play sand and it worked pretty well. However, my yard didn't make it through the winter and the falling of my oak tree's leaves. Hoping the levling sand makes the difference. Great video

I line in Los Angeles and have some patched in my St Augustine grass. Was going to start this process but was wondering - is there a desired season to do this? Its obviously Winter here coming into Spring. Is that an appropriate time to do this?
@bettercallchadd2 жыл бұрын
Great question!! The sooner the better. It will product the lawn from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer.

Why does my grass in front of my house grow enough to cut ever week, but back yard, I could cut once every three weeks? I water both the same.

Is there a point where it’s too hot to do this?
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
Never!! It's great to do it in the summer to protect the lawn from the heat.

I just subscribed to your channel. Great video. I was about to buy plugs to fill in an area, is that recommended along with this process?
@bettercallchadd4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for subscribing. It really motivates us to make more vidoes. In my personal opinion I am not a fan of plugs. I have seen them work but in my opinion I would just sod the area rather then plugs. I say its a 50/50 shot if they will help or just die out.

I started to do this, and now it is definitely working but the weeds are coming up now. Is it ok to put down weed killers while we just put down the compost and sand?

Hi Chadd, in this video, you said 50/50 mix of the Black Kow & Sand..... but then in the video you did 66.66% to 33.33% (2 to 1 ratio) of the Black Kow & Sand (1.0 cu. ft Black Kow vs 0.5 cu. ft. Sand) Can you clarify this? Thanks for the videos btw!
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
Great question!! I was a bit unclear. I really should not have said 50/50. I meant 1 bag of black kow to one bag sand. That way, the mix has more black kow than sand. Now of ots a wet area more sand will help. But the ideal mix is 1 bag of black kow to 1 bag of sand!!

I'm gonna try this out here in CA. I have many patches since the watering has been limited. Hopefully this retains the water a bit longer for it to grow back. Thanks for the advice.

Great idea. Grass should recover well with more mild temperatures there. Goodluck.

Hi Chad from Jacksonville Florida, can this still be done now even if the grass will go dorm?
@bettercallchadd3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kim. Thank you for the support. You absolutely can. It will help protect the roots and stolons from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. So it is a win win year around.

Great video! I have some areas that every year thins out and gets bald here and there with my ST. Augustine grass. If I fill it in with sand or black cow how soon before the grass starts to grow?

What should I do in the days and weeks after this application? The grass starting to poke through is getting awfully long

Hi Chad, just watçhed your video. Almost seems too easy. I was away for 3months during start of summer (The Villages, Fl) got back to much dead st aug grass thanks to chinch bugs! Bugs are dead now, i hope. Is there any need to plant plugs of grass or will surrounding live grass fill in on it's own? Thanks for the video.
