This video is the complete deal on how to fill in dead spots in St. Augustine. Sounds simple BUT it's the important details on the prep and application that makes the difference. Everybody says to just dump some BK on these spots. Then your yard doesn't react and you have to do it over or your just disappointed in the results after all the work and money spent. I've got some areas where I lost turf to pulling out crabgrass, and sod webworms eating my grass. Followed this plan and as he said Mother nature made it work. Thanks Chad.

How about getting a post hole digger and taking some plugs from the healthy areas of the lawn and putting the plugs in the affected area. Fill the hole up with regular dirt and the grass will recover from the runners. Done it many times.
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
You still need to put down soil. The bare areas exposed to the sun will make it very compacted and the runners will not grab. That is the case here. You can also buy plugs from the store. Seems like a lot of work, but that's one way of doing it.

Most warm season herbicides should kill that winter grass. It's hard to say without knowing the grass, and it could have brought in other weeds. If herbicides are not getting rid of it, you will most likely need to resod.

So I'm a total noob at this, and I'm now learning all of this now. I put down Milorganite early April and now it's may 24th in DFW Texas. I want to do this method but I never applied any nitrogen fertilizer. Should apply before or after filling in the patch or is it too late for the nitro?
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
You want to apply the Nitergeon in the spring and miliorgnite in summer. You can do it before or after. You can still apply now, but at lower rates because of the heat!!

Thanks for the video. What is the best time to do the repair? I am living in TX, and it is getting cooler in Dec, is it a good time? or better wait until next March before the spring comes?

Good stuff, thanks. How thick does the top soil on my St Aug grass have to be before the grass is not able to grow through? Hope I didn't smother mine to death. Thanks.

About 4 to 5 inches. It settles fast, so you probably didn't!!

great video....thank you. Would it be ok to spread out the mix and put plugs or seeds (before filling the mixture) Thank you
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. That would just be a bonus. If it's St. Augustine grass, their is no seed.

Hi Chadd, for very bare areas due to gray leaf spot damage, should I use St Augustine plugs in addition to the soil?
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
Yes. That will speed up the process. Definitely make sure the fungus is gone.

We have bad bare spots at the top of our backyard on a slope down to a lake. I am going to try this there. Have been worried about erosion.
@bettercallchadd4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend adding sod on top if it is on a slope. It all depends on rainfall and what degree the slope is but erosion may become an issue before it fills in.

Hi, can I add new seeds with this application?
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. St.augustine does not grow by seed. But if you have another grass that does, then absolutely.

I'm on the gulf coast in Texas with clay. Would you recommend a higher amount of sand vs the top soil?

Chad! You happen to have any ideas of how to fill in bare spots where a lot of dirt with clay in it was used when houses were built? I live in Ohio, Reynoldsburg area and our grass/yards are terrible because of the dirt that was put in originally. Or what can be used on overall yard to grow better, healthier grass when clay dirt was originally used? Thank you.
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
Using that command soil is always good. Might need to till those areas as well. That could be a good solution. I know you need to aerate clay soils often.
