I think you might be referring to the old 2019 Form W-4 where you would take 1 allowance if you are single. In the 2019 and older Form W-4s, one would mark 1 if you are single which you mentioned and then one would mark 1 for any other categories that apply and then add them up to get their total "allowances". Generally, the more allowances one has, the less taxes are withheld on one's paycheck to account for those allowances. In 2020, the Form W-4 changed and no longer does the allowance system so you don't mark number 1 down anymore like you did before. Hope that is helpful!

So is this essentially equivalent to claiming "0" on the old W4? I was under the impression that the goal of this new form was to prevent over/underpaying taxes, in order to get as close to breaking even as possible. If this is indeed the goal, then wouldn't claiming 0 completely negate that?

I am used to claiming 2 as a single filer with one job and breaking about even at the end of the year. Will this new way where we cannot adjust it take the most out of every check and give a larger refund (like a 0 used to do) OR will it take the least out of our checks and be closer to breaking even at the end of the year with almost no refund (like a 2 has done for me)?

Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! When you put 2 dependents down on Form W-4, it just lets your employer know to take that information into account when withholding taxes on your paycheck. Because you have two dependents, you will most likely owe less taxes because you may qualify for the $500 Credit for Other Dependents ($500 for each dependent, so $1,000 total in your case). With this information, your employer's payroll system will be able to more accurately determine how much taxes to withhold on each paycheck. The amount of taxes withheld should be pretty close to what you owe. Hope that is helpful!

If you are single, have one job and don't have that much investing income (interest, dividends, stock gains), then generally all you have to complete are steps 1 and 5 on the Form W-4. Hello! If you have one job then this could be the right amount for you. I assume that you receive two paychecks a month. So, $400 in federal taxes are being withheld each month. By the end of the year, you will have had approximately $4,800 of federal taxes withheld. If you think you will owe more taxes by the end of the year, then you might consider Step 4(c) of the Form W-4. There you can enter any additional taxes you want to withhold in each pay period. You might also wait to see what your next paycheck withholding amount is because it might change. Hope that is helpful!

How do I claim exempt on the new 2021 form ?
@TaxTeach4 жыл бұрын
If you qualify for exemption from withholding, write "Exempt" on Form W-4 in the space below Step 4(c) and you only have to complete Steps 1(a), 1(b), and step 5 on the Form W-4. Do not complete any other steps. Hope that is helpful!

Hello, I am a minor and my employer just handed me this form. Would I just fill out 1(a),1(b), and 5?
@TaxTeach3 жыл бұрын
You would fill out 1(c) as well, Steps 2-4 only need to be completed if they apply to you.

4a on Form W-4 is if you want to have extra withholding on other income such as dividends, interest, certain retirement income, etc. Hope that is helpful!

What do you put if you’re claiming a child but not married
@TaxTeach3 жыл бұрын
If you have a child under the age of 17, in Step 3, you would put 2,000.
