I think you might be referring to the old 2019 Form W-4 where you would take 1 allowance if you are single. In the 2019 and older Form W-4s, one would mark 1 if you are single which you mentioned and then one would mark 1 for any other categories that apply and then add them up to get their total "allowances". Generally, the more allowances one has, the less taxes are withheld on one's paycheck to account for those allowances. In 2020, the Form W-4 changed and no longer does the allowance system so you don't mark number 1 down anymore like you did before. Hope that is helpful!

So how do I make them not take that much for a single person with no dependents since I can’t put the 1 Exempt anymore? They take about 30% of my total check. For example, my check last week was for 2315.83 and after taxes it was 1580.10. I don’t want to get a big refund, I want the money now!

So is this essentially equivalent to claiming "0" on the old W4? I was under the impression that the goal of this new form was to prevent over/underpaying taxes, in order to get as close to breaking even as possible. If this is indeed the goal, then wouldn't claiming 0 completely negate that?

I am used to claiming 2 as a single filer with one job and breaking about even at the end of the year. Will this new way where we cannot adjust it take the most out of every check and give a larger refund (like a 0 used to do) OR will it take the least out of our checks and be closer to breaking even at the end of the year with almost no refund (like a 2 has done for me)?

Hi, thanks for this video. Much appreciated. I live in Los Angeles (CA), and received a few paychecks that seem to have way too much taxes taken out. For example, one has a total gross of $630.00, with $225.00 deducted in taxes. That's more than a third of the paycheck... never had that much come out. It was my first time filling out the new W4, and I wrote a "0" in the blank where it says "multiply all other dependents by $500". Ciould this have affected the deduction amount? Thank you.

I was doing my taxes the other night through TurboTax and I realized that I have a blank on the Tax withheld on my W2. I was like, huh? I didn't understand it. But I checked my paystubs and no taxes were taken out from my paychecks. So now I owe a good sum. I spoke and asked my employer about it, and I wanted to change that! So they gave me a new W4, and I wasn't sure how to fill these out. I just don't want to go through this again... I want to fill out the W4 to where my paychecks are taxed so I don't have to pay it when I'm going taxes. What exactly do I write with this new form? @TaxTeach 3 жыл бұрын
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! When you put 2 dependents down on Form W-4, it just lets your employer know to take that information into account when withholding taxes on your paycheck. Because you have two dependents, you will most likely owe less taxes because you may qualify for the $500 Credit for Other Dependents ($500 for each dependent, so $1,000 total in your case). With this information, your employer's payroll system will be able to more accurately determine how much taxes to withhold on each paycheck. The amount of taxes withheld should be pretty close to what you owe. Hope that is helpful!

If you are single, have one job and don't have that much investing income (interest, dividends, stock gains), then generally all you have to complete are steps 1 and 5 on the Form W-4. You'll then give this to your employer and their payroll system will withhold taxes on your paychecks. From my experience, payroll systems tend to lean on the conservative side and over withhold.

I just switched jobs and had to fill this out. Why is my federal income tax withholding almost half of what it used to be? I have a feeling I'm going to owe a lot.

What if you're married filing joint but only one person works and the child is 17 in 2021? Were would she go as a dependant and how is that calculated?
@TaxTeach
@TaxTeach 3 жыл бұрын
You can skip step 2 since only one of you works. If you and your spouse make under $400,000 you would put $500 for the child in step 3 since they aren't under 17 years old. Hope that helps!

If you don't have a job then you don't have to worry about Form W-4. Form W-4 is meant to be filled out and given to your employer so that your employer knows how much taxes to withhold on your pay checks throughout the year.

How do I file EXEMPT. Which line should I put it on?
@TaxTeach
@TaxTeach 3 жыл бұрын
If you qualify for exemption from withholding, write "Exempt" on Form W-4 in the space below Step 4(c) and you only have to complete Steps 1(a), 1(b), and step 5 on the Form W-4. Do not complete any other steps. Hope that is helpful!

Wait so I used to claim myself ..so we can’t do that anymore right? So all I gotta do is literally just fill out my name and basic info and literally sign the bottom lol that’s it? And just skip the other steps. I’m single, no dependents and just 1 job.

Hi! How do i fill this correctly for them to withheld the maximum amount for single tax payer, i enter all zero and they only withheld around $200 on a $3300 paycheck.
@TaxTeach
@TaxTeach 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! If you have one job then this could be the right amount for you. I assume that you receive two paychecks a month. So, $400 in federal taxes are being withheld each month. By the end of the year, you will have had approximately $4,800 of federal taxes withheld. If you think you will owe more taxes by the end of the year, then you might consider Step 4(c) of the Form W-4. There you can enter any additional taxes you want to withhold in each pay period. You might also wait to see what your next paycheck withholding amount is because it might change. Hope that is helpful!
