Hey everyone! Quick update, a couple of people have mentioned the app line learner working great too. I’ve used it since posting this video and it does work well, only thing is, I didn’t find it super user friendly and you can’t change the pitch of the readers lines like you can on audacity, so it’s obvious it’s a recording of yourself. However, I’ve booked jobs from using line learner so it doesn’t seem to matter too much. Thought I’d mention that incase anyone wants another solution ☺️

This is a comforting video. I've been doing it the way you show with Audacity before I ever saw your video. Great minds think alike. It amazes me that I can never find anyone to read lines with me. I ask and they seem to think I'm going to poison them and they run and hide. Also, nowadays there are online Ai sites where you can put in the text of your choice and choose a Voice and it spits out your text in that voice. Sounds mostly realistic too.

This is absolutely brilliant!! And while setting up this recording & getting it perfect, it helps you memorize your lines as well. For the first time in about 3 years, I'm actually looking forward to my next audition!! Like you said, I may not choose to do this all the time but it's a fantastic alternative to what has become quite mundane.

Super unlikely I'll get a response but your videos have been inspiring me a lot. I'm 28 years old from Scotland. Do you think it's too late to get into acting? I always dreamt of being an actor, I done stage performances from around 10 years old up until I was 17, unfortunately I was a late bloomer, I didn't go through puberty until I was 19 (I know, most guys go through this at 13). I guess one perk is I've always been behind, so I look younger than I actually am which is an accidental benefit, sometimes I feel really embarrassed that 23-25 year olds feel years more mature than me, but it's also my fault of hiding from the age of 18-24 and being afraid of socialising. I started socialising again at 25. Photography was one of my outputs, street photography, that's actually how I found you and hearing you were an actor was very inspiring, you seemed so confident/happy and in complete peace with yourself that I couldn't help but feel inspired. I recently decided I want to jump into acting because I don't feel ''old'' at 28. But when I think of people who started at 16-21, I certainly feel behind in life. I wouldn't be able to join a school until I was 29, and at that point it makes me wonder if I even got in would I be in with a bunch of 18-21 year olds and they'd think I'm pathetic? I still suffer some mental health torture from those years of isolation, it's probably noticeable in my typing. I already have the odds against me being from Scotland, does being late to the acting world make it worth it? I found a course here in Scotland that's a 1 year course, rather than a 3 year course, and I often get tempted to just go for it but god am I petrified. I wish more people seemed as excitable and passionate as you, because I'd probably be less intimidated by humans.

Its never too late. I would start with intro acting classes. Its a great space to learn and grow as an actor.

This is great! My only add on would be that once you can afford to, buy a decent mic to record the lines, similar to what you would buy if you were interested in doing voiceover work. (It doesn't have to be expensive, my lovely Sudotack was 35 quid second hand.) The mic will help to reduce room noise and/or make it easier to remove room noise in editing, so you don't hear it in between the silenced moments giving away the fact that you are responding to a recording.

I am gobsmacked!!! I did everything you demonstrated in this video and was so glad that I already use audacity for voice over work. I had the final step to go....change the pitch...and it is not in my effects list!!! I have spent hours looking for an alternative, trying Change tempo and Change speed to no avail. Somebody please HELP!!!!
@SeverineHowellMeri Жыл бұрын
Do you have the latest version of audacity? Make sure to save what you’ve recorded as an mp3 and audacity file so you can re open it in the new version. But try updating your audacity. There should also be a search bar in the app so you can search for “pitch” to try and change it. Hope that helps

LOVE THIS! You're charming & full of practical tips that are easy enough for anyone to use. My ONLY criticism: the extra-loud sound effects. You're plenty interesting without them, but the real issue is that they are MUCH louder than you, so they startle me a bit. Despite that, I'll be watching your other tapes because I'm sure to learn plenty from you. Thanks for sharing this!

Often on youtube when people show self-tapes the reader's voice is barely possible to hear (on the cell phone at least), if without a speaker, what can be a solution to that? Also the condenser mics (like the one you showed in your other self tape tutorial) usually work better if you are very close to the mic. I wonder what affordable equipment one can use in such case to make the sound recording louder? Apart from boosting it in post production
@SeverineHowellMeri2 жыл бұрын
Boosting it in post production can help but in my experience, it doesn’t matter if the readers voice can be heard too loudly since it isn’t their tape, it’s yours. So long as you can hear it when you’re recording it and it’s a little audible in the final thing, you should be good to go. If you’re recording the readers lines yourself, make sure you’re close to the mic when you do so and you can try boosting the gain. Usually, recording it in your phone and then airdropping it to your laptop to edit it in audacity will make it clear enough.
