I like your teaching style. Clear, easy pace. And I like that you tried to mitigate the damage by the dogs’ digging. Always a great rule to leave the job site better than before you were there! Great job!

How come ur armada machine has a long stick receiver that u can wave back and forth to find the broken wire, but the Amazon link doesn’t include it?

That stick is something I rigged up. I use the tracer weekly and it makes it easier for me to use. I mention that “stick” in detail in this video where I provide a full tutorial of the PRO290. Cool, but I only need a locator once, and I'm almost 65 now. I'll probably get a $50 detector and hope it works instead of the $250 for the Armada.

Completely understandable. The Armada is just an easier unit to use and it also allows you to trace all kinds of different underground utilities. Here is a video where I show how to use it to trace out different underground lines. Can you please explain how to rig up the extension cord to attach the black alligator clip to an outside ground? I currently am using a tone and probe to try to find my break and grounded the controller black alligator inside on a piece of metal. I can hear a tone from the invisible fence wire but only in areas where I have the wire dug up and exposed. Hoping if I can connect the ground to outside metal stake in the ground I won't have to dig up the wire and have direct contact??
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 4 ай бұрын
Basically I took an old extension cord and cut the 2 plug ends off, exposing the copper wires inside. Then I attached the spring gator clips to the exposed copper wires and taped them up. This allows me to attach the black ground lead to one end of the extension cord and the ground rod to the other end of the extension cord. This way you can reach to the outside and get a good ground with the ground rod.

If you have a corroded wire does the system send out a signal still? My unit is no longer working. I have replaced the collars and still there is nothing. Both lights on the transmitter are working but there is no sound.
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 6 ай бұрын
If corrosion has set in on the copper, the radio signal has a difficult time projecting off the wire. So your collars will stop responding. If you do a short loop test as I demonstrated in the “how to find a break” video, you can quickly determine that it is, indeed the wire outside that is the problem. Here is a video where I explain The corrosion issue and how an improper splice can cause the problem. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH7KnqaEqdiHbK8si=rHKW2kfQxAnH2Cbi

Thank you! Very helpful and interesting. However, another question. I used another line detector, but your mention of beeping on each side of the line helped, so I tried again, since it was beeping the entire time, indicating NO break. (ugh) Per instructions 5 years ago, I twisted/cancelled the wire where we crossed over. However, I decided to cut that extra. (keeping the pup out of a water feature area). So when I placed the wires back in the "box" I now have 2 red lights! yay! (one indicating power, the other light indicating a full circle) HOWEVER!....NOW the COLLAR is almost continuously beeping! In the house, in the middle of the yard, 10 feet from the line, there's no obvious pattern. Is there a way to see if the issue is the collar? (I disconnected the battery, as it wouldn't stop) What could I have done to cause this? ugh . thanks
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 5 ай бұрын
If you’re experiencing the collar activating all over the place, check the “field width” dial. If you cut out part of the fence and reduced the amount of wire being used, you may have the field width up too high. Depending on the brand of fence you’re using, there also may be a filed width booster switch. If so, you may have to switch it to the low position.

@@outdoorpetsolutions The collar didn't have a function on it, but "the box" did! Didn't realize it has always been at the highest setting (10), but when I started turning it down, the 2nd connection light went off! (around 4) so back up to 8 and all seems good - so weird! thanks for your help!

Would a walkie talkie work?
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions Жыл бұрын
Hello McKenzie! You’ve probably seen a few videos floating around where folks are using an a.m. radio or walkie-talkie as you’re suggesting. However, the reality is the aggravation of trying to find a break utilizing those hacks can be pretty frustrating. A lot of interference comes into play by trying to use a.m. radios and walkie-talkies. To make your repairs easier on you and to not have to spend all weekend long searching for the brake in your dog fence. The armada pro 290 is definitely the way to go.

I have multi strand wire for my dog fence(pet safe), most all of the line break devices say it doesn’t work with multi strand wire, is this true? Found a couple of reasonably priced units.
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 2 ай бұрын
That may be the case with some of the cheaper options out there. But I’ve never had an issue tracing stranded wire with the armada that I use in the video. As long as it’s copper, it’ll trace it regardless if it’s stranded or solid.

Instead of just burying the wire directly in the ground what are your thoughts on using pvc pipe?
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 4 ай бұрын
Your thought process is a popular one. I have been out on many service calls where folks had decided to try and fish the underground fence cable through some sort of protective pipe typically half-inch PVC. But in most cases, the pipe will end up getting damaged, resulting in damaging the fence cable inside. so making the repair becomes very difficult because the proper spices that are to be used to repair the dog fence cable will not fit inside the pipe. So you have to leave those repairs exposed outside the pipe. Also trying to fish the underground cable through a protective pipe makes the initial installation very difficult. The trench you’ll have to dig is much larger to accommodate the pipe. For ease of installation and longevity. The best thing to do is just install a high-end underground cable. The heavy duty fence cable that I provide in the OPS 1000 dog fence kit is designed to be buried directly in the ground, and to withstand the elements. It’s the same cable that I use in my professional installations. Here is a link to view the fence system and the commercial grade cable that comes with it. www.outdoorpetsolutions.com/store/product/diy-dog-fence-kit

Will the Armada pick up nicked wires or bad connections that are not completely broken in half? If so, is it the same sound as a complete broken wire?
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 22 күн бұрын
That’s a good question. And the short answer is no. If the cable is just nicked your dog fence system shouldn’t be alarming. If you have a loose connection the tracer is liable to simply trace right over those areas. It can only locate the cable and complete breaks in the cable. This is why it’s best to splice the cable together properly to prevent loose connections in the future. Here’s a video where I review the proper way to splice your dog fence cable. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH7KnqaEqdiHbK8feature=shared

Is 16 gauge wire much better?
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 5 ай бұрын
16 gauge is still not as big as the cable I use and that I include with our DIY fence systems. Smaller the number, the bigger the wire. The outside jacket of the wire is also important. The higher the number on the jacket, the thicker it is. The jacket material needs to be dense and able to withstand the outdoor elements. The cable I use offers the best jacketing. It’s a very strong material.

Why didn’t you use the ground in the outlet? Why did you need to ground outside? Thanks in advance for any response.
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 3 ай бұрын
You can use the ground in the outlet. I have in the past. However, when using a shared ground, the signal can bleed over to the other lines in the house that are sharing that common ground. For a nice clear signal that’s dedicated to the underground fence cable, using a separate ground outside is best. Here is a link to a video I made showing how to use the armada to trace other underground lines and I address the ground issue. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHSzhWmbq9eAZ5osi=if8cbynPMZ89EWs9

@@outdoorpetsolutions thanks for the quick response. I’m trying this now and signal is dying ~10 ft from the house no matter which side of the loop is live. I just ran a ground outside. My loop is an acre so I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the distance or if maybe my break is just close to the house. Any suggestions?
@outdoorpetsolutions
@outdoorpetsolutions 3 ай бұрын
My pleasure. I would suspect that the break is close to where you’re losing the signal. If it’s in your twisted pair that would explain why you’re losing the signal on both sides of the loop connections. I’d dig the line up right before the signal is lost and inspect in that area.
