sir, i wanted to know , how hard is it to get a trainee job in the hospital as your first job ,after passing both the AMC exams, without much experience , for newly graduated IMG's ?

Hello Chirag. This is a good question. Lets assume that you have identified a position which is a Resident Medical Officer type of job (RMO) where the hospital has not been able to find a local graduate. Firstly, having your AMC Certificate is a definite advantage over candidates with only AMC Part 1. This being said. You will probably be still competing against other candidates who also have the AMC Certificate. Paradoxically too much experience in other settings may count against candidates when going for these RMO jobs. The panel may feel that the doctor has a lot of "unlearning" to do as well as new learning. So often candidates who are recently out of medical school, have the AMC Certificate, who can display good English communication skills and come across as sensible and adaptable in inteview make the ideal candidate for these jobs.

Hi not annoying at all. I’m going to do a video about internships. Because there is much confusion about them. They are not available for IMGs. You should target resident and other similar jobs.

1. No. Because you are generally training in state run hospitals and don’t need to bill Medicare. 2. From your initial registration whatever that is.

I have a question about specialty training. I have 2 more years left to graduate from medical school and I want to do my residency in Australia. As far as I know, first thing for me to do is to proceed with the standard pathway to get a general licence. I don't know the steps after that point. How will I apply for the specialty training in cardiology after I (hopefully) get the general licence?

Once you have your general registration you will be able to apply for basic training with the RACP www.racp.edu.au/trainees/basic-training/adult-internal-medicine#entry You need your general registration as well as being accepted into a BT position. Cardiology is highly competitive in Australia.

I am 48 years old Egyptian, working in the field of kidney transplantation since 2002 and I started working as a nephrologist since 1996/and I have the MRCP 2011, Specialty Certificate of Nephrology 2012 from the royal college of the physician (London). In addition to the primary qualification and master’s degree of Internal medicine from Cairo University as well as another master’s degree in Nephrology from Ain Shams University. I have the OET grade B in all.

My question is in the case the RACP thinks that my background as specialist is comparable to Australian specialty. After being assessed by RACP for comparability I need to work some time "under supervision" (peer review) before to be able to register in AHPRA. What kind of job might I apply as specialist since I'm not registered yet, but RACP thinks I'm comparable? Might I apply for a follow position for example? Thank you very much.

Hi Matthew thanks for the positive feedback and thanks for sharing with your friends. Unfortunately Cardiology is one of the specialties that is very popular here in Australia. This is for many reasons but one of them is that because it is procedural you can often make a very good living doing it. If possible I would advise specialising as a general physician as there is more demand for that here.

Hi Aiman most GPs (family medicine specialists) in Australia see a range of older patients. There are no official subspecialties in General Practice but if you were willing to focus on elderly patients you would do well. For example nursing homes are often looking to employ GPs to help with their patients. If you wanted to retrain and specialise in Geriatrics you would apply to the College of Physicians - advancemed.com.au/RACP 🖥

Oncology is an Advanced Training program which you enter after completing your basic Adult Medicine training with the RACP, so its around 5 to 6 years in total. Of the various Medicine specialties its probably a little easier to gain entry into and there is certainly lots of demand particularly in rural and regional Australia.

Advanced training in oncology is 3 years on top of a minimum of 2 years basic training. There’s generally a fair bit of demand for oncologists.

If you are experienced as General Physician you can probably apply to the College of Physicians here for an assessment. General Physicians are one of the category of doctors that are often advertised for Area of Need. What you would need to do would depend on your training, qualifications and experience.

Hi Akhthar. General Registration is one of the criteria for entry into GP training but currently you also need either Permanent Residency or Citizenship. From your description you are also not eligible for specialist recognition as have not done general practice in another country. You may be better off continuing to work in Emergency Medicine if possible. There have been special options in the past via rural general practice but recently a number of these schemes have been closed down. It may still be worth contacting the Rural Doctors Network if your plan is for general practice. Hope this helps. Anthony
