There is a leak in the middle cylinder coil boot. High kv under load induces the spark to go to ground via the spark plug port. No load kv at idle will allow current to flow through the spark plug. I would love to work with guys like this. Great video I'm sure this will help a lot of newbies.

Really nice video I think you showed us that we really may not even have to use the paper clip trick at all since by pulling out each core individually gave us indication of spark and yet did not indicate which cylinder was mis-firing until you raised the core itself. Simple enough for me. Thank you much, Keep up the great work!

EXCELLENT instructive procedure for spark wire coil and plug diagnosis. the ONLY flaw in the whole video is your statement that spark is coming UP from the bottom of the plug. It is not, it is coming DOWN the wire TO the plug FROM the coil and choosing the apparent path of LEAST resistance and going down the side of the plug in the carbon filled crack to get to ground where the plug screws in to the head. So it does not come UP FROM the ground point it comes DOWN from the coil Voltage travels + to - not the other way around.... But needless to say that changes nothing if someone does not know that it will not hinder the purpose of this video in any way anyway. Absolutely fantastic video other than that pick at you point well done. I am a Mobile Tech been doing it since 1994 i actually helped a customer avoid spending money with me and CURE his 1997 3.4 toyota misfire with THIS video as his aid (send him the address) so again, great job thanks much.

When you shorted the ground wire the flame was the same size on each. As you pointed out, if a wire is bad the flame would be bigger, because of more resistance in the natural pathway through both plugs on that circuit. If either plug was bad, I would expect a bigger flame as well, for the same reason. So, those of you who say it's a bad plug are ignoring that part of the evidence. Of course, inspect the plugs, but I think it's something else.

Great demonstration of logical troubleshooting 👍 . I believe the cause of the misfire to be one of the two plugs fed from the center coil which was not contributing under load. It is possible that maybe the center coil is breaking down under load - however when you lifted the center coil out of the spark plug well - it appeared to have a good spark jumping / arcing from the spark plug boot - so I am thinking that maybe the center coil is still good. 👍🧐✌️✌️

it is Spark plug OR the walls of the coil are leaking sparks to the cranckcase when in place. You could just use a spark plug wire from the coil to the spark plug and see if the same occour when you take off the wire from the plug, if it does de same it´s the plug and if doesnt its the coild itself leaking sparks when in place.

I would swap the coil pack in the middle with any one on the out side, if the misfire go to the outer cylinders then I could say it is the coil pack that is defective. However, if it remains in the middle cylinder then I would conclude that the spark plug is defective.

hello, i read this and agree with you. however, i have an annoying one. what if after concluding that the plug is bad, you replaced the plug on the bad cylinder just to find the misfire still remains at the exact same cylinder. would you suspect that cylinder to havr a bad compression or a bad PCM??

most likely a weak or broken valve spring although i have heard of injector under load, plugs are alot more durable then people think and it works on idle, pulling the coil and seeing no change only indicates that cylinder with the problem not necessarily an ignition fault, and mostly likely not ignition since it still jumps an inch. But going by duanes other video its probably gonna end up being the injector under a load
@justinsvidz13 жыл бұрын
spark is escaping via the plug boot, this is very common on these engines. Swap the coil and you are good. A quick and dirty way to check if the coil is bad is to swap it with one of the other cylinders. If the misfire code moves to the other cylinder, then the coil is bad. If not, then it's not the coil.

Very old school would call for a coil replacement. I once had a bad coil on a 1959 triumph motorcycle. I found myself driving into eagle pass, TX to a general store and bought some birthday candles and a roll of electrical tape. Meled candle wax into the hole and wrapped in electrical tape and the bike ran very nicely after that. Back in the 60's thats all there was to eagle pass.

it's an issue with the spark plug.The sign to listen for is as the plug boot is brought closer to the spark plug there is a momentary clear run then revert to misfire.This indicates a plug not fouled but increased resistance from plug end to ht has raised the coil output and lessened the spark rate enabling it to fire.Look for a worn electrode or leakage in the spark plug body. It is a trick I use to identify if a engine needs std or resistor spark plugs, for optimum burn n clean idle/emissions
@LSJUAN13 жыл бұрын
@380gb A compression leak would not get worse under load. Its felt more under load because the engine is turning faster which is basically more strokes of the piston. More strokes means more times the cylinder did not contribute to compression. You feel more times the cylinder failed to create compression which gives you the illusion that it gets worse under load.
@simplemechanics2462 жыл бұрын
Another easy. Seeing the spark does not mean instantly it is good spark. Under compression it must be enough strong to make that jump on spark plug. Outside engine it can spark so much as it want, under compression is the key.
@precopster113 жыл бұрын
Well the second coil produces spark as we saw, even though the engine slowed when it was removed. Could be spark plug or worse a badly seating valve which is causing a lack of compression when under load.

my guess is compression. the leak isn't bad enough at idle to affect the engine but once you add the load the leak increase under the pressure.

Spark plug or a cracked plug. also check for carbon track on spark plug and boot.
@mageac13 жыл бұрын
id say either the coil it self, or the coil is getting low voltage, because it runs fine when not under load, when cylinder pressures climb, it cannot support enough volts to bridge the plugs gap

@TheTarrMan13 жыл бұрын
More than likely it just needs the rubber boot under the coil. I know it was still good because it fires both plugs at the same time (one cylinder is in compression while the other happens to be on the exhaust stroke when it goes off). A simple fix that saves the customer a lot of hard earned money.

Bad plug connection on the #4 cyl (the one under the coil pack) because you tested the leads using mechanics wire and all coil packs were about the same.

I would say a partially fouled plug due to when the coil is arcing to the plug, the misfire goes away for a second. Higher voltage available fires the fouled plug.
@MrOlderandwiser13 жыл бұрын
My "guess" is that there is a cracked or carbon tracked spark plug. The spark generated by the secondary ignition will always take the easiest path to ground. In this case I think it is the defective spark plug. The repair would be replace the coil assembly\ with boot and at least that one plug or all of them if a tune up is needed.
@Nerd130109 жыл бұрын
Next step, now that you know which cylinder is missing, switch the coil with one next to it, and see if your problem moved, if not, replace the spark plugs if you don't know when they were done, and if that doesn't fix it, you've got a fuel problem, or a compression problem.
@buggsyspam13 жыл бұрын
I'd swap the coil with one of the others to verify the issue stays in the same spot. Assuming the plug looks good and the problem stays on the same cylinder, it's probably an injector. If the problem moves with the coil, replace the boot/spring. Or maybe just half the coil can go bad?
