How to Find Age of Furnace

How to find or figure out the age of your HVAC furnace. On most furnaces it is impossible to find a date stamp anywhere that shows how old the furnace is. To determine the age of a unit, you need to find the data plate or basically the information sticker that has the model and serial number on it. The age of the furnace is sneakily coded in the serial number. In this video I show you where to find the year when a furnace was manufactured and show you the site where you can find this information yourself. The site I mention is www.building-center.org

I have newer Trane equipment, about 2 years old, and Trane was kind enough to simply put the month and year in plain English. Never understood why manufacturers make this simple thing so difficult for the consumer. Also thanks for sharing that website at the end of your video.

They encode the date and other information into the serial number so that they don't have to deal with multiple data entries for the same item. The one serial number tells them everything. It is for their own housekeeping purposes, no one else. And by the way, the serial number is not just a record of that particular unit, and not just the date, but also the place of manufacture. Some even indicate the factory it was made in. Everything can be traced with one number.

Here’s a word of advice. All trane and American standard equipment have the manufacture date right on the top right corner of the nameplate. It’s the only brand that does that I know of. That way you don’t need to look up the letter.

Lol, I think the serial number is actually more for the manufacturers than then the technicians or homeowners but it sure would be nice to just have a regular date stamp outside of the serial number.. We just recently moved to Hawaii! The plants we only had growing in pots in Minnesota we now have growing outside 😄
