Also to add, pick them up by grabbing both the top and bottom parts of the carapace, just like Beau did. The turtle's backbone is fused to the top shell and if you only lift it up by the top shell it can fatally injure a turtle, especially a heavier species like a snapper.

When I was seven years old I lived in South Dakota. In the summer I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle near Burke South Dakota. We would go fishing in Burke lake which was full of snapping turtles. I used a bamboo pole then. My cousins knew when I had a snapper on because I would drop my pole and takeoff running. I was scared to death of them. Thanks to my cousins. They told me if one bites me on the only way to get it off was to wait for a thunder storm and the thunder would scare them away. Karma if you want to call it that way but when I went to put another fish on it there were only fish heads on it except for my northern pike. It had not been touched. Everyone came running as I was laughing my head off. I still don't like those snappers. I enjoyed this video as it brought back memories of a good time.
@Xx1tyler21xX7 жыл бұрын
My mom told us about the thunder thing. I had never heard anyone else say it until now. They used to bring me Terrapins or Box Turtles to play with when we were real young. I had seen Snappers so I knew what they could do so I was reluctant to touch the terrapin but momma said "it's ok they don't bite". Well she was wrong. Not sure exactly what happened but I was sticking my finger in it's face and it bit me.That wasn't the first time momma got me. She had me help her work on a push mower once that wouldn't start, so she had me hold the plug wire while she cranked on it to see if it was getting fire. It was getting fire.

Any chance of you making another turtle searching video? I fly fish (here in central Pennsylvania) and usually walk/fish a mile or so of stream each time. I've seen those raised mud areas and tail marks in the stream bed, but never knew that what made them. Will have to take a stick and poke around next time. Enjoyed the video ... keep making more.

+Beau Ouimette I'd definitely appreciate that. I see raised mud all the time with those little depressions on top. I figured it was old raccoon or opossum footprints, and never guessed there would be a turtle buried in there. As far as the tail marks go, they are all over the little trout streams around here. Occasionally, I will see a turtle resting on the bank (happens about once every 2 or 3 outings). With respect to the Civil War, it didn't make it this far north. I'm about 70/80 miles north of the PA/MD line, near Altoona, PA. I'll admit, I never really go looking for stuff in the stream bottoms. I'm more into wild brown trout fishing. Found a $5 bill once. That's the extent of my treasure hunting. I'm sure if you fixed up that little spring in your video and fenced the area to keep the cows out, you could have a nice little wild-trout fishery in there. Trout don't need that much water to survive. It just has to be cold with plenty of bugs around to eat. Looking forward to your next "turtle video."

Nice video , snappers hate being picked up by the tail. However, they love snapping dry sticks and aluminum poles!

It's usually the one messing with the snappers that end up being called "Stubby". First one I saw was when I was about 6. My grandfather stopped the car as we watched it cross the road. Very, very, very, very, slowly. And it was HUGE!

Oh, and JMO, you do not talk to much, that is what makes the videos interesting. Plus you have a great voice. lol
