This may be the most informative video you've produced. Great breakdown, I still have boxes of lake maps from the 80's and 90's. Who remembers going to bass outdoor shows and there was always a booth or two of guys selling old real estate books and aerial photos of lakes before and during construction? I was lucky enough to be befriended by a truly great bass angler named Basil Bean from Greensboro, NC. One of the best old school fishermen who really knew how to locate bass and understood their behavior.

I agree with you, this is one of the best videos Randy has ever done. I was fortunate to buy a house in the 80's nextdoor to a guide/ tournament fisherman on Old Hickory, Center Hill and Percy Priest in middle TN. Charlie would take me on practice days and fun fishing days. I learned so much from him. RIP Charlie Jackson.

Terrific information! I know what lures to throw, its finding the bass that's the challenge. You've provided a simple procedure that is easy to follow (and remember) ;)

You hit the nail on the head with this one Randy! So many videos on lures… you need to buy this one or that one. But it don’t matter what you’re throwing if you not around the fish. It can be very overwhelming when you on a large body of water that is new to you, thanks for breaking it down and telling us your approach

I saw Don Iovino in a seminar one time. The thing that I most remember his saying was, “don’t fish where there ain’t no fish”. I try to remind myself of that when I’m out there hauling water and practice casting.

You once again remind me of my early days in the 80’s. My “Old Boy” was a member of the New York bass club I joined, and Joe told me stuff I would never have found out on my own. When I started on the tours, I was sponsored by a now defunct company called MAPTRAP. It was a large piece of plastic, that you could insert a map into, and draw on the plastic with a dry erase marker. I drew a checker board over the entire map and then started eliminating the areas I couldn’t fish with some accuracy. Once I had a bunch of open “boxes”, I would allow 10 to 15 minutes per box. If I found fish or not, I marked the bad area with an X and moved on. What I had left was a game plan and based on either a one day or a three day, eight hour tournament, and had something to work with. I wish someone would start making those boards again, as I stuck Velcro to the back, and it would not move on the boat carpet, even at high speed.. Great content Randy!

HI Randy, I agree. Once I choose the part of the lake I will fish, I fish each spot like it is a pond. Where are the bass in this particular area and what advantage does this cover provide? What structure makes the best sense for this angle of sun or wind direction. Then get serious about what is going on between my reel and the bass. Not what is some other boat racing off to or what about that island a mile from here... Quit guessing and start fishing. Once I settle in to it, the old fun comes back and I get a good day. Smiling, George.

This is exactly the video I was going to ask in a comment for today. Lake cumberland is my home lake. The large creek arms are very confusing to me this time of year until post spawn. I've just started winter fishing this year so I wasn't sure if all the fish moved the whole distance to the main lake or if the deeper part of the creek acted as the main lake. This helps put things in perspective for me a little better. Thanks randy. Best vids on KZbin.

I learned long ago as a North East angler that you fish where they stock. A lot of trout angler in my area only fish stocked water. There are thousands of catch, weigh and release events every year. Release areas always have a good population of proven to be catchable Bass of legal size. All Randy’s tips are great but if you still don’t find them never overlook the ramp,

I may not be your typical audience but I am a kayaker who fishes ponds, small lakes and occasionally small reservoirs. No electronics. Any tips for how to break down these smaller bodies of water? I typically fish shallows: easy to see lay downs, overhangs, rip rap, creeks flowing in, etc. Deeper water intimidates me. Any suggestions?

Learning seasonal behaviors should be the starting point. When you’re on foot, have to carry everything on your back, and have limited time to hike to the water, you need to know as much as possible before you start casting.
