Valuation is one thing a lot of people miss, especially when it's about high-dividend paying companies, forgetting that high dividends are sometimes for supporting the stock price of under-performing companies. I have a good portion of my portfolio in dividend and growth stocks, and I've realized up to 20% over the last six months. It's yet about a strategic approach, rather than running after 'hot' stocks or high dividends.

I didn't start out as a dividend investor, fortunately my 401K was in growth mostly and even though I had a modest salary for most of my life I just kept my mitts off of the retirement account. Now I rolled it into an IRA and bought dividend income stocks. I wasn't able to compound dividends over the course of decades, I just got here by market growth. Now I'm making $62K per year on $600K
@philcrowley0074 ай бұрын
I don't invest with the thought of whether something is hi-yld/hi-div growth. I just buy quality companies and ETFs and do so on the individual merits of what I am buying. I am nearly 58. Your portfolio yields more than mine and admittedly has a higher div/grth rate. Most of my dividends come from my Roth IRAs. My taxable accounts are slowly catching up to dividends produced from my IRAs while my IRA dividends are also increasing annually.

If one is in their 40s and just started investing (have 401k from work). Should they just focus on growth etf since it will be too late for them to see real benefits with dividends?
@larrydimon78114 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say early 40's is 'too late' for anything related to investing. If you have at least 20 years left to put money into the market then I think growth is a nice way to lean. I think value/dividends is good to have at any age in any market. I do both. The best part is I still enjoy my life while I do this. Travel, and only buy things I love. It's often wise to get with a pro F.A for the best investment style considering your situation and circumstances. I did with about $210k in the wake of the pandemic, and seeing what could happen made me want to prepare myself to be able to weather another financial storm should it ever arise, today my portfolio is now valued at approximately $2.3 million.

It is a great video on how to find good companies. But which is a better buy - a great, fancy popular car that everyone wants to own or a normal, overlooked one? You can't answer thst question, because the best buy is *entirely* dependent on one thing that Joseph did not talk much about - how much you pay. Valuation is literally everything. Everyone wants to own large, predictable, growing, cash-generating businesses. You don't beat the market by doing the same as everyone else. What generates higher returns that isn't just luck is entirely what you do and see differently that is also right. This is a great video about finding good companies, but that doesn't help much in being a good investor.

Nice overview. Wish you sort talked about how industry matters as much as market share in Buffetts approach. Its why he has AXP, MA, V and COF, and AXP is a much larger part of his portfolio than V or MA. Its also why ADP, PAYX, PAYC and PCTY have all outperformed despite the larger two losing market share. Theres industries that Buffett has stayed completely away from, and some he buys parts of the whole industry like payments and banks. If an industry's current cash flow yield and/or its future growth is larger than the market, a whole industry can outperform despite a company losing market share. Especially when it has low levels of reinvestment and high total shareholder return. Also just for clarity, Berkshire owns part of Citi lol I dont want to come off wrong here though, this is by far the best overview of Buffett's approach I've ever seen on KZbin. Especially the part about competitive advantage, outstanding shares/dividends, and DCF analysis. I think this is one of the best investing channels on KZbin

This was an eye opening video. I've read about operating leverage and organic growth from papers and such, but I don't think I have ever realized how important these factors are when trying to find quality companies. You just put it into words so well that everything clicked. I have been "value investing" for a while now, trying to estimate the intrinsic value and only investing in what I feel are undervalued stocks. I have thought to myself that I have been smart in my investing. My problem is that I have not really focused on quality as much as I have told myself. My analysis on the quality of businesses has been pretty much only qualitative. Like "this is a fairly large company that has had a decent CAGR..." and so on. The examples you gave on STABLE FCF/per share, organic revenue growth and operating leverage really got me to understand the quantitative ways to analyze quality. I thank you for this incredible video explaining your philosophy, it is extremely valuable.

I think being consistent is key, specially if you have age on your side (just being younger) that’s worth way more then what you put in the market. I’m up 18 percent that past year. Look for deals when you can and let your un-invested money build up if you feel you can’t find any deals. Or just invest in a basket like VTI and do the same amount each month than forget about it. You’ll do fine just by doing that alone.. that’s what I do for my ROTH IRA and it’s been great ever since I started due to the average growth of the market year over year.

Like Warren Buffet said, dividends are only good if the business you’re investing into can’t make good use of that capital. So if you’re trying to invest into businesses with actual growth, looking at dividends is a waste of time. Why are you investing into a company if they’re returning capital to you because they think you can make better use of it than they can. It’s not much different from bond investing. The way I see it if you have a million at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50k-70k in dividend income.

It's not difficult, but you have to learn and handle. Another thing is that if you can't manage your home, maybe you shouldn't invest on your own. I love the point about long runway for growth in total addressable market. Good way of wording something that I value. Think of growth in this way while looking for opportunities to forgive recent reductions in earnings and cash flow. It can help one buy growth at value valuations. If Mexico is in recession but has a healthy population pyramid for growth relative to the rest of the world, consider looking for an ETF. That’s a long runway for growth. If internet advertising giants are down in 2022, in a still increasingly online world, consider it a gift. Ad downturns end, and the digital runway is long. If cars are starting to use more silicon carbide microchips for powerful reasons, and there’s currently a downturn in auto sales overshadowing the long term story, consider this to not be financial advice.

Intrinsic value comes from reinvestment of the retained earnings at high returns. Compounding. If you buy a bond which gives 10% interest and you can reinvest the interest every year in a new bond at 10% yield you make obviously much more money than if you cannot reinvest the interest or at a lower yield such as 5%. The same effect happens internally in companies. They just do not invest in bonds but in real life projects and business opportunities. Stocks are in a way like bonds which automatically reinvest the interest, just the interest rate is not fixed and the investor has to find it out /project it by analysis.

With my FA at the helm of affairs of my trades, I have been able to build up a portfolio of stocks ,etfs and bonds that has generated a decent million plus in profits over a long term. i love the passive income.

One of the real benefits of having a strong portfolio is that you want your portfolio to have the compounding effect; it isn't necessary for each company in your portfolio to be a compounder! For instance, Buffett uses his insurance companies as cash cows to then allocate capital to growing businesses!

I have a question. When it comes to "monopolies" isn't it risky in a way? It takes a long time to get there and once they do then everyone wants to buy them...then once you're at the top isn't it possible for more and more business to eat small chunks out earnings? Tesla for example.....they were the leaders in EV's but now over time other companies are taking over the EV market slowly. Thoughts?

Hi Joesph, great video! I'm trying to apply some of what I learned in this video to "grade" my portfolio is before I make changes to it... The problem, though, is that its hard to go through the financial statements and use the correct numbers for some of the metrics that you use. For example, cash flow per share... what is the top-line number that you use before you divide it by outstanding shares? Is it "cash flow from operations"? Maybe in the future, if you are looking for a video topic, I think that a great video would be a break-down of how you go through a earnings statement to determine each of the criteria that you use for stock selection and portfolio management... A lot here, sorry.... I guess you just make it look easy... Thanks, John

Hi Joseph, question on INTUIT in the long run with lower population growth and automation replacing jobs do you see any risks with individual tax payers reducing usage of things like turbo tax etc limiting future growth of this stock? Just a thought. Appreciate it!

You can do really well with sponsorship plugs in videos. I’ve gone the route of trying to internally build services that I own 100% of the upside and that I know offer good value for customers. When promoting other sponsored products in many cases you have to compromise on quality which I don’t want to do.

Hey Joseph! I appreciate your insights on not selling out of fear during a decline, but I'm curious about your thoughts on selling during an incline, especially when there are signs of market excesses. For instance, we're currently seeing the Buffett Indicator signaling significant overvaluation, the Greed and Fear Index indicating extreme market greed, and an inverted yield curve warning of a potential downturn. Additionally, factors like soaring P/E ratios, speculative trends in crypto, meme stocks, and NFTs, along with optimistic expectations of the Fed cutting rates, are prevalent. Do you believe it's still value investing to sell when Mr. Market is offering unprecedented generosity, and how do you navigate such situations? I'd love to hear your perspective in one of your videos. Cheers!
