Another thing I always add to my toollist while caving is a bucket of water (and a shield). Bucket of water is useful for traversing between the different Y levels but also great for staying safe against any large lava pools (and get it ready for obsidian farming later). And a shield is well.. a shield lol.

Another tip when cave mining: Take a shield with you, it’ll block hostile mobs attacks and block arrows.

Now that is a genius idea. I’ve been playing with ways to remind myself how to get out. The cobblestone in deep slate layers is very helpful. Same for basalt or anything else that stands out. I bring dirt sometimes too.

Hey Wattles, I have another tip for mining/caving: When mining, I always bring a bunch of signs, and when I come to a fork in the cave, I put down a sign showing which way is the exit. That way I dont have to remember what block i chose to mark the way. :)

Another tip for finding your way out of a cave is to place directional arrows with your torches. I always point to the way I just came from when I come to a large area or an area that has branches.

If you got a deep dark nearby, another good strat is to drop into there with a bunch of iron hoes and instamine all the sculk. For one, it'll give loads of exp for enchanting later, and sculk coverage also means you don't suffer from the reduced air exposure thing. I'd recommend doing this in deep dark areas without a city, since cities tend to have more shriekers (whereas a regular deep dark cave probably won't even have that many)

A good method is to go threw shipwrecks and find buried treasure

If you're finding mining deepslate slow, you can convert it to moss with a moss block and bonemeal and then the moss can be insta-mined with a hoe. Ores won't be converted to moss, only the stone and dirt. Moss mining can be a really efficient way to clear large areas quickly and find diamonds that didn't generate exposed to air.

This is great timing. I started a 1.20 world recently (that tip for finding iron on the surface was amazing, btw), and after hours of spelunking, I have found zero diamonds. Hopefully that will change now!

I usually play it safe and do a little strip mining for diamonds early game. I also preioritize a fishing rod over a bow and do some fishing. A bit tedious and boring, but both gives food, an endless supply of bows and fishing rods - even enchanted ones, saddles and enchanted books (even mending). Usually before long I get to a fishing rod with lure iii, luck of the sea iii and unbreaking iii. Just get enough iron for an anvil to enchant gear with the books and rcombine items to repair and/or get higher enchantment levels. Fishing gives a decent amount of XP as well.

When I explored that cave, I found a pit--I think it was past a geode, either the one you found, or another one--that lead down to Y-40 something, then I dug a staircase down to Y-54, dug a long, 2c2 main corridor, and several long, narrow tunnels branching off it, and eventually found about half a stack of diamonds, give or take a few.

I haven’t made it to this point yet. Been working on a project I would love to share with you. It’s a beginner farming compound… crops, animals/meat/ trading hall, complete with iron farm the measurements work out great to make it 13 levels high not including the floor and and basement levels for chest, and 27x27!!! A lot of research and thanks to to prowl84 can’t remember the digits!!! FYI I’m 40 my 5 yr old got me into this and been playing on Xbox 1.20.62 since Xmas 2023

Btw so I saw my iron farm as you remember and the zombie de spawned and I was so confused but then I remembered I switched to peaceful because there were pillagers and I didn’t want a raid on my base to kill the villagers and I was building a huge house. Fastest way I’ve found diamonds is to fly around ancient cities with night vision potions. You can easily find a stack of diamond ores in 2-3 ancient cities.

Tip for everyone. Torches on left side as you go down & in big rooms torches go on floor. So whenever you want to leave, you follow turn around and follow torches on your right to escape. Also if you die, gives you clear path back to your stuff.

This is a good guide to finding diamonds, but with a few misconceptions. First, any deepslate will always take longer to mine than stone, which includes ores. So while technically, both ores drop the same items, one will take longer to break. Second, you don't just need full iron armor when caving deep, you need a shield. No matter how good your armor is, shields block attacks from all mobs, especially arrows from skeletons. Shields make skeletons way easier to fight. But at least you showed players like me how to defeat skeletons without shields
