Stone becomes cracked when it's cooked in a furnace because in real life, stones can crack (and explode) when heated, especially if they are river stones. The water inside them boils and has nowhere to go, and so the stone cracks or explodes, depending on how much water was in it. So never use river stones for a fire pit.

Have you tried moving villagers with leads and boats? Running with the leads and the boat can pull the boat up and down blocks. You can also use elytra to pull the boat, just make sure you don’t fly too fast or the lead break
