excellent info Mike. I wish I could find chert/flint like that but unfortunately, Australia has very little flint (it only occurs in South Australia, two states away from me) I have to buy Aussie flint. Thankfully you can use any stone around the same hardness as flint, so quartz/quartzite, chalcedony, jasper, petrified wood, or obsidian (though obsidian is about as soft as the steel striker you are sparking off and quite difficult to do) Mike Brunner sent me some of his chert as well, it is very good easily comparable to our Aussie flint.

Grandma said they made power from chicken shit, mixed with charcoal. She passed before I was old enough to learn. But I remember she said every few years they would change location of chicken coop to make power.
