How to find stone for flintknapping, in this episode, I explore the chalk pits of the south coast looking for flint and chert for knapping purposes.
The bedrock of these chalk cliffs is host to some decent quality flint veins, so I dig around the bottom to find some smooth and featureless nodules.
what would you like to see me make with these stones? Leave a comment below.
Enjoy 💜🤙🏽

Usually there's a strip of high grade material directly under the cortex,a band of really nice honey coloured material. This is the nicest to knapp. When ever i go to a big chalk face i take a big heavy copper hammer and spall off from the main core. Flint in a nodule tends to get worse as you work towards the centre with our English materials. The honey material is really top class(other knappers love it) and can produce stunning translucent blades/points. Some of the ' concrete' can be worked through but can be a massive pain in the arse on a delicate piece. That material looks very grainy...almost like the field flint im knapping at the moment. It's nice but getting the ' right' material is as much of a mission as learning to knapp. You can make do...but when you find higrade you'll know it as the pieces make themselves... almost. We don't have all those beautiful flawless materials the yanks have(very jealous) but we do have material that is extremely strong, hard and flexible. Our flint is beautiful!! I'm currently trying to find some nice material for Pat blanc(jack crafty) there's another top knapper i know in Scotland. We've been swapping materials...my top grade English for his top grade Arran pitchstone(obsidian). Check his work and that beautiful stone on KZbin.....'captain flint.' a really excellent young knapper turning out great work from Scottish obsidian and my Henley on thames flint .. really cool !! At some point im going to do a video on flint and what i look for. Keep up the good work ...great video👍

Ps. Why not try doing a ' rock to point' video or a rock to biface. You could knapp out some quarry blanks or preforms. As a tip for quarry spalling...a big copper hammer(thor hammer) and a few heavy billets of aluminium and you can peel some whopping spalls from a core....it really helps when trying to produce larger pieces/blades. You can then work the spall up to the cortex to get at that film of high grade. It's so much easier.

Thanks for watching. I have a video coming out soon on spalling to point dropping soon! Yeah, I tend to use antler and stone only. I'll leave the aluminium and copper to the obsidian slab knappers 😉

I used to work a lot with copper, I do like it.. don't get me wrong my work with copper is way better than with stone and bone. But isn't it going to be, I mean modern metal tools are going to be far superior than bone and stone. I want to stick to as traditional as possible and see how I can improve using these methods. Yes, copper was around in the neolithic. But would they have used copper boppers and copper pressure flakers for flintknapping I doubt it. Would have been too high value. I really wanna try and better my techniques with a stone age tool range! Appreciate your tips and appreciate you watching buddy. 🤙🏽

@@storbunlimitedbushcraft6996 Cool...I learned to chip with antler and stone and then included copper and aluminium as I got old for the ease of it. Plus I'm not bothered what it's made with these days...I use all sorts of crap. It's not important to me as long as I get the piece I want at the end and it's refined to my liking. Fairly sure the Hunter gatherers would've used what worked best😄 If you fancy a nice flint knife blade knapped with sh*tty copper... I'll send you one free. I've honestly never hafted anything I've knapped. You obviously love all that sh*t 😄 It could make for a good vid for your channel...you can just tell people it was knapped with unicorn horn or whatever to keep it real😄 thanks for the reply bud.
