HOW TO FIND THE BEST TRUCKING COMPANIES TO WORK FOR (YES THEY ARE OUT THERE!) If you are a professional truck driver, your NUMBER 1 goal should be securing a CDL driving job with a great trucking company. If you want to know HOW TO tell if a trucking company is worthy of your time and effort, watch this video!
There are thousands of trucking companies out there.
How on earth does a professional truck driver tell the honourable, good trucking companies from the rest of the pack?
There are ways to do just that.
-- Check out the trucking company office and shop.
-- Speak to as many people at the trucking company as you are able.
-- Speak to as many truck drivers as you are able who work at the trucking company. Ask ‘how long have you worked here?’ ‘How do they treat you?’ ‘Are you paid on time?’ ‘Are you pay checks accurate?’
-- There are essentially 3 sizes of companies. Size of the carrier does matter, depending upon your preferences.
-- A carrier with a home base near where you live is a good idea.
-- Simple fair pay structure. Easy to read pay statements.
-- You need to be treated properly and respected as the professional driver you are.
These are but a few of the things you should look for in a trucking company when looking for a driving job.

Hey folks, thanks for tuning in to our video. Tell me, do you find it tough in today's trucking industry to nail down a good trucking company to work for? Are you smilin' and lovin' where you are working?

This pay of like 34-42 cpm with over 10 -15 experience has got to give!! Its very true.... They want you to drive 700 miles a day and wear yourself out for 500 bux a week!! While they make millions... Its horrible the way some carriers treat their drivers.

The company I work for is a small carrier and we have about 15 or less trucks. I haul production saltwater and occasional oil base mud for the oil field. The company is ok but I still haven't experienced an excellent company yet that pays really well. Do I need to find another neich to go into? Does hazmat pay better or is it all about the same? Sorry for the long message 😊

You always give good advice and say a lot of what I keep telling other drivers these people tell you what they think you want to hear and as soon as you start working they try to change the rule of the game in the middle of the game. I always tell them that I know that the company is in business to make money and not to make drivers rich. but guess what am not doing this for fun either all of this is cause by drivers because a lot of us let these companies act as if they are doing us a favor well let the divers stop working and see how that goes

Thanks Dave for keeping this real! Regardless of the size of the company’s we all drive for, what we otr folk need is compensation for “all hours worked”! PERIOD! It’s sickening to watch my hours slip away “off duty” waiting for a dock to open! ...Question to all my brothers and sisters. How( as non-union) do we get some sort of voice or collective bargaining?

talking to other drivers is one of the BEST way to choose a company... you will get the UNFILTERED version of life at that company when you talk to that companies drivers... if it's a trash outfit, they can't wait to gripe to someone about it when asked lol

Serious question, has a driver ever whined to you when you asked about their company? I've asked several drivers and every one seems to love their company. The cynic in me thinks they have referral bonuses in mind like my company does. I just can't believe some of these companies are so great.

I just got my class A license. I work a full time job and couldn’t go through trucking school. I passed the test the first time I took it. I am going to be a third generation trucker. The hardest part is finding a trucking job that does not require experience. Even jobs that I have looked into do not count schooling as experience. How can a guy with no experience get started?

Might depend where you live but in Ottawa was able to find 2 places that were willing to hire me with no experience within a week. If you take a look online, Kijiji, signs everywhere. They might not be the best job but you can find something to start out with.

keep an eye on the little ( or big ) scams the customers like to try. Some will try to get you to do a " little " favour for them. Its surprising how this favour is never mentioned to the dispatcher or sales rep. Stand your ground, and don't be pushed around. They will try to " push " but I always tell them to call the office, or put it on the invoice. Never happens.

So let me ask this? Have you ever had a driver manager tell you how many miles you should be driving every day? Me personally I think it should be up to the driver to plan out the trip properly to get there as fast and as safely as possible. I'm still learning ELD so it ate into my driving time and I only drove 480 miles yesterday. I know that in 11 hours you can drive almost 700 miles if you hammer down and don't go to the bathroom lol..... But that shocked me when he got on my case about how many miles i drove..... In 12 years of driving I've never had a dm tell me that.. So now im sitting because i stood up for myself. Lol.. I guess im being punished for recovering a load for another driver who didnt want it and not going as many miles as he wanted me to.. Lol..

That would be retaliation on dms part and should be reported asap. I ignore my dm, he's a child and never drove a truck before. I only communicate via macro because it's a legal record and he doesn't talk back. If via freeform I keep it brief, ie, 'traffic heavy', 'fuel lines down', etc. Verify your miles, personality as your dm breeds other bad habits and mile scam is too easy and tempting for them to resist. Be safe out there :)

I say driving jobs will be around at least as long as you are. So far there's lot of hype, but too many problems remain unsolved. Like who's going to want to insure them, especially after the first big wreck. Do they need a co-pilot and what will his pay and hours look like. Is he just expected to hop out of the bunk every time the truck needs something? Right now the trucks can't recognize the shoulder of the road unless there's a line or a curb. Then look at I-80 to see how much of that highway has a curb or an edge line. Virtually none of it. Believe me Autonomous trucks still have an awful long way to go before they can be used in a practical fashion. Dave

I've been driving for just over 9 months. About to get my crane operator license ( got my trucking license because I needed it to apply for cranes). It depends how much money you want to make but if you want to make the most in trucking I think you need to specialise. Example in Ontario Canada mobile crane operator can make about 40$/h once all apprentice hours are completed, I think cement pump truck make around 30$/h, where as a truck driver I was making 22$/h. Maybe some liquids, gas, float equipment. Maybe things like those pay more than general freight.

Pepsi need drivers badly. 60k per year is normal. We supply the trucks and load them. You can make 400$ a day when another close pepsi facility needs aid. It's local, so you will be home every night. Half an owner operator pay, but your treated with respect because we need you so badly.
