Interpretation of Cohen's f² is similar to other effect size measures, such as Cohen's d. Typically, a small effect size is around 0.02, a medium effect size is around 0.15, and a large effect size is around 0.35. However, these thresholds can vary depending on the context and field of study.

What if the r quare excluded is greater than r square included? That gives a negative effect size. how to interpret that?

effect size is interpreted using the absolute value. Thus you'd have to ignore the negative sign, such at -0.56, would be (0.56). However, in making inferences, if there is a negative relationship between the IV and DV, you'd have to factor that into the discussion and then state that that negative effect is strong, moderate, or weak based on the absolute value of the effect size estimate.

If f² is negative, it suggests that the model without the Independent variable explains more variance than the model with the Independent variable. This could imply that the independent variable is not contributing substantially to explaining the variance in dependent variable.
