My super-simple 4-step process for finding the key of a song by ear!
This is taken from my "Music Theory for EDM Producers course". Find out more here: bit.ly/2YMRBma
Why would you want to find out the key of a song? Here are a few reasons:
1. You can jam along and create your own melodies and chord progressions. More use for guitarists and keyboard players rather than producers, but handy nevertheless.
2. You can dissect the song for your own evil purposes 👹(e.g. using the chord progressions).
3. If you’re working with other musicians / singers / producers, it’s very handy to know what key you’re working so you all speak the same language.
4. If you’re a DJ (as I was for many, many years), it’s good to know so you can mix songs by key and have them work seamlessly together.
THE STEPS:
Step 1: Get "in sync". Listen to the track!:
• How to Find the Key of...
Step 2: Loop the first chord of the 1st verse (or the 1st chorus):

Step 3: Find the root note:

Step 4: Work out whether it's in a minor or major key:

Step 5 and beyond - Bonus goodness!

Can you please cover the topic of knowing when and how to use different stock plugins and effects in Ableton. Because I complete the initial arrangement of a track I'm working on but, I'm stuck otherwise. And I've been sitting on this track for about four months now, just trying to figure out which stock plugins and effects I should use in each of the stems within my track. So if you could make a vid on that issue, that would be GREATLY appreciated as well:).

Thanks, learning a lot. Being a bit tone deaf, I use Ableton's Spectrum, found under Audio Effects/Utilities, to analyse a song.

when you said the first note will be the root (in the verse) note do you mean what the singer sings or things like the base etc . i guess you mean the first chord in the first verse ?

Why do you sometimes use only two notes of a chord in the chord section of an EDM? example, Cmaj chords use only C and E instead of CEG, Dminor use only D and F instead ofDFA?
@EDMTips
@EDMTips 5 жыл бұрын
I would call that a harmony rather than a chord. I know you get power chords (the 1st and 5th notes of a chord), but if I was using just the 1st and 3rd I'd call it a harmony. The reason someone might use just the first two notes is if they feel it sounds better in the context of the music!

@@EDMTips Is there any other technical consideration for the harmony of a chord track of a song using different notes from beginning to end? For example, let a certain tone on the chord track avoid turbidity and the sound is simpler and cleaner? (After all, the harmony sounds better than the chords.)
