What is confusing to me is that for example, if I start labeling the elements in my sequence starting from a_0, then I am able to use the formula [a_n = a + dn] where a = a_0. This only works for sequences where the sample sequence contains no variables. However, if I have a sequence that has its last element with a variable, then only the [a_n = a + d(n-1)] where a = a_1 works.

Btw there is a much easier method that i found out about , if you write out the nth term , then substitute the value of "n" with the term you're trying to find . For e.g: find the 31st term of this sequences 5,11,17,23... 6n - 1 6 × 31 = 186 - 1 = 145

I will now show my reasoning: 1) Writing the formula. a(n)=a1+d(n-1) 2) Distribute "d". a(n)=a1+(dn-d) 3) Simplify or in other words rewrite the equation. a(n)=dn+(a1-d) Which is our old friend in disguise: Y=mx+b 😀

If I hadn't seen this video this is what I would have been doing to solve this kind of problem: 1. I'll find the arithmetic mean b/n A7 and A3 then find the value of A5 2. I'll do the same for A5 and A3 then find the value of A4 3. I'll subtract A5 from A4 to determine the common d/nce "d" 4. I'll use "d" and subtract it from A3 then A2 finally I'll find the value of A1 5. After that I'll use the formula "An" and find the nth term A lot of work for such a question eh? But now there's a simpler way...tnx!
