Man this is a great video, I like the fact that you are doing you and you aren’t worried about others opinions. I’m 48 yrs old and I have been wearing ball caps my whole life and just recently I got into the fedoras to have more of a cleaner casual look. So I’m no fashion guru and have turned to vids like this to help in my decision to create my new personal style. Thanks for the vid man.

I'm in the same camp. At some point you look into the mirror and realize that the baseball cap makes you look juvenile and it's not acceptable in all social contexts. However wearing a flat cap turned out to be a success. Initially I got some weird looks but I also received compliments. Before that people were just indifferent. In summer months I can pull off the Panama look but the rest of the outfit must be tidy. Polos, linen pants etc. They key is to find the hat shape that really suits *you* and wear it with confidence. You want to avoid that dorky costume party look.

Currently going for a wide brimmed hat for its utilitarian aspect (caps don't cut it in length and width to protect my face from the sun). I had an accident recently which left me with light scars on the face (must avoid sunlight exposition on those), so I'm taking the opportunity to plunge into wide brims. The thing with those is that they are more "sensitive", style-wise. So I'll have to make it work!

I got started with hats because I've worn western snap shirts my whole life. Though I'm a born Kansan, I've never got into the whole country thing but I got a nice bolo tie for a wedding I went to and it snowballed from there. Got a nice pair of boots next, a nice gambler hat, and I thought it would look crazy at first, but it works here in rural Kansas, and it makes me feel like a badass in black western gear.

It took me awhile to buy a hat, mostly because I was wearing tee's and jeans and I couldn't pull it off. After getting into jackets and shoes, the hat looks great.

I grew my hair past my shoulders and gained some bulk working in the construction industry -- that's what changed the hat game for me. When I was a just a skinny white boy with a shaved head wearing jeans and tees I could only dream of wearing anything beyond a ball cap. I never felt good in a brimmed hat until I filled in the space between head and shoulders with a bunch of hair, a beard, and some broadness to my build. Felt like I just looked like a lollipop in a wide hat before.

You can wear a hat with jeans and t shirts if the jeans are not really baggy and the t shirts are slightly form-fitting plus the accessories like simple watches and bracelets and necklaces all tied in with a killer pair boots like Thursdays captain or stormking I'm getting into the bikers wallet and chain which can be a nice touch. And a nice leather or waxed canvas jacket won't hurt either.

Once you've nailed your size, custom makers are the way to go. Carles Marti based in Barcelona is a great maker. From Panamas to Fur Felt Fedoras, he'll custom make them for you. Great guy too.

After eyeing a Stetson Stratoliner for over a year I finally pulled the trigger on one last week. I measure my head with no exaggeration over 50 times. Took it out of the box and put it on my head and it was love at first sight. I was so sure I would like it I bought it online. Picked up the special edition in hemp because it's so hot right now. I rock it closer to the eyebrows with a slight tilt to the left. Definitely will be picking up a Natural or Caribou in felt next.

First: The hat looks dope.. everyone who tells you otherwise is simply hating. Second: Why have hats become such a controversial article of menswear? Used to be a staple in every man's wardrobe and they can be both stylish and functional. Hats (beyond baseball caps) need to be a thing again!

Honestly, I think it was when the smaller brimmed fedoras started becoming popular and then were plastered as part of the uniform for a douchebag. It was hard for a lot of guys to set themselves apart from that stereotype while wearing hats other than baseball caps. I do think they are coming back around more these days!

As gent's lounge noted, the negative opinions most certainly come from the late 90s early-mid 2000s Trilby hat trend among frat boy type youth... The hats were cheaply made department store hats, rather then quality vintage or custom hats and on top of that the trilby hat has been misrepresented for years in pop culture as being a fedora... which technically it is a a part of the fedora family but when a fedora has such a short brim the style completely changes and thats were a differing name comes into play hence the "trilby" hat. Notably Frank Sinatra wore a trilby as well as the Blues Brothers and even classic James Bond but its a style that is vary hard to pull off correctly nowadays, Interestingly modern fedora trends are moving towards wider then normal brims like wider then the vintage/traditional standard which I believe was like 2 - 2 1/2" but a 3" brim is not at all uncommon to see on a fedora nowadays and I wonder if the trend for wide brims might have even derived from hat wearers and hat makers wanting to vary clearly distinguish between a true fedora and trilby "fedora" Lastly, trends/fashion styles always come and go. Movies and tv series have a huge impact on our pop culture fashion trends, it only takes 1 or 2 really good period pieces to get people back into forgotten fashions. Westerns and such seem to be coming back into popularity right now, which means a hat resurgence is likely on the horizon... there was at least 2-3 western blockbuster movies this year, shows like yellowstone and the prequel series 1886, peaky blinders etc etc all regular display men in hats but even non period pieces can inspire resurgence of certain hat styles like breaking bad making pork pie hats more acceptable and trendy again, the black list series character Raymond Reddington for sure makes fedora hats look good and then youve just got the celebrities themselves that are known for there hat fashions like Johnny Depp, Pharrell, Slash etc etc

There is a place in Mexico City that is amazing, the store has 180 or something years making hats. All types, from fedora to Australian. The store is called: Tardan. If you ever go to CDMX I recommend giving those guys a visit. Cheers

What materials are better 100% beaver, 100% rabbit or a 50 /50 blend of both of them

It really depends on two things, what your using the hat for, and your price point, all in all the gold standard is 100x pure beaver, but for work I like a rabbit or rabbit/beaver blend for water repellency and softness as pure beaver can be stiff sometimes I find. But beaver or beaver blend will hold its shape a lot better than a pure rabbit when it comes to rain. Just my experience

Where did you find that chart matching face shapes to styles? I don’t think I agree with it at all. Western hats, e.g., can be worn by a lot more people than what the chart shows. Seems like a bias by the chart maker toward certain styles.

I love hats and think the one in the video is a good look. I have that one in white, carmel, and black. Gray would also be desirable. My hats are mainly felt, wool, and straw. Felt and wool in cool months straw in warm ones.For me Fedoras, Trilbys, Driving Caps or Flat Caps, are preferable but occasionally a Pork pie as well. I prefer a tall crown Pork Pie to a short narrow brim Pork Pie. Frank Sinatra made a tall crown gray Pork Pie famous with a wide three pleat white hat ban around it on one of his album covers. Of course hats are matter of personal preference but I find classics never go out of style. No baseball hats for me.

Any tips on finding plus sized hats? My head is 26 inches around so that would be a 8 1/4 or 3xl and I couldnt find any in the syles I like (derby, gaucho, etc) on the website you mention. I'd say its due to a big brain but thick skull is probably more like it. 😉Do I have to accept getting them made custom?

I love hats! How, I remember when 🤠 hats were popular in the 80's and it was so hard to find one that fit properly because my head was so big and I was even in a Western store. Maybe once things are open again I'll check out some stores in Philadelphia, which is the biggest metropolitan city to me.

Hats are really essential in places where you need to wear sunblock. You can't put sunblock on your forehead because it eventually gets in your eyes. You can zero in on suitable hats quicker if you work out whether you're warm, cool or neutral skin undertone.
