The first one is actually #406, not #375. #375 is design type A139. The one shown in the demo is type A140.

Thanks for the info, new subscriber here. Which Scott catalog are you using I'd like to buy one. Also what do you use to differentiate between stamps with different shades of same color? Thanks

Thank you so much for these two videos. I'm just the person you described in your opening; I inherited my dad's collection and am trying really hard to not get ripped off. Is the stamp worth 75 cents or 75 dollars? shrug? lol. Here's hoping I have at least one rare one. This certain bunch I have say 545 11x11 and it's a block of 4. Then I have another block of 4 546 perf 11. Is the info on the back correct? Who knows? Your videos are going to help me find out.

A friend of mine came across some pretty old stamps. 4 of them could be worth between $3,000 to $30,000 a piece. I bought a perforation gauge but now I need to know if they are watermarked or not. What type of fluid would I use. I can't seem to find it on Amazon.
@mallardstamps3 жыл бұрын
Look for lighter fluid with naphtha in it! In my experience watermark fluid off Amazon is not worth buying bc lighter fluid is just as good and much cheaper

Watermarks are not "on the back" of stamps; they are pressed into the paper itself.

Ok but what does the fluid do to a mint stamp's gum?
@mallardstamps3 жыл бұрын
I’ll do a video on it soon!
@estamps74693 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't damage it as the gum is water based and the fluid is oil based.
@stephenwgill3918 Жыл бұрын
It does not affect the gum, it dries completely and leaves no residue.

I still use my grandmother's bottle of Carbona from the 1960s. It is carbon tetrachloride. I asked ChatGPT what the difference between it and naptha and this is what was displayed: "Naptha and carbon tetrachloride are two different chemicals. "Naptha is a term used to refer to a group of volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. It is used as a solvent and as a raw material in the production of chemicals such as gasoline, solvents, and plastics. "Carbon tetrachloride, on the other hand, is a chemical compound with the formula CCl4. It is a colorless, non-flammable, and heavy liquid that is used as a solvent and as a starting material for the production of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other chemicals. However, it has been discontinued as a commercial solvent due to its toxicity and environmental impact."

Hello Dear, what do you recommend having a water mark brand, Tweeser, and a perforation gauge ?
@stephenwgill3918 Жыл бұрын
Never handle stamps with your fingers! Always use stamp tongs to avoid inadvertent damage and transfer of oils from your fingers to the stamps. In response to a previous comment, I've used Ronsonol for over 40 years without a problem or single incident. Naturally, keep it away from any open flame and, as with watermark fluid, don't let it touch your skin--repeated exposure can cause irritation.

What is your experience with the watermark detectors that cost about $260. Do they work? Can one build a similar apparatus cheaper with a lightbox of sorts?

I cherish my collection of worth only meager bits. Lol i have to find a different way to see wmks. The gum being on it is a factor in the higher grade, and more value. I know lots of people use the fluids. But i gasp at the thought. Thanks for your insightful video. Take care. Good luck with your collection.

You should delete this video and re-shoot it using tongs. Teaching others to handle stamps without tongs is highly unacceptable regardless of the stamp value.

@stephenwgill3918 Жыл бұрын
Not if it's done properly. As I just posted, never touch the stamps with your fingers. Watermark fluid and Ronsonol will both dry completely and leave no residue and will not affect the gum on mint stamps.

@stanley5553 жыл бұрын
NEVER EVER use lighter fluid on your stamps. Far too dangerous, especially if you smoke. Also, catalogue prices are only a guide and the prices quoted are what the catalogue dealer would SELL the stamp to you - not what you could get on the open market. Only extremely rare stamps could ever achieve the catalogue prices.
