The definition isn't really that muddy TBF. Although people seem to be confused about what it actually is very recently... Oxford dictionary - Wild Camping: the practice or activity of camping in the countryside rather than in a campsite or other organized setting. Cambridge Dictionary - Wild Camping: the activity of camping (staying in a tent) on land that does not have any services and is not part of an official camping site. Collins Dictionary - Wild camping: is camping in remote places with no facilities, rather than on campsites. Note the word 'camping' in the description of every definition... All Dictionaries - Camping: the activity of spending a holiday living in a tent. So by definition wild camping is: The practice or activity of staying in a tent (camping) in the countryside or remote places on land that has no services/facilities that is not part of an official campsite or other organised setting. So sleeping in any type of vehicle isn't wild camping and I'm not sure why, within the last couple of years, people that sleep in vehicles are adamant that they're 'wild camping'? Is it because it sounds more exotic than "I slept in my motorhome last night in a layby on the A647"??? Maybe you could clear this up for me? I don't want to offend you by this post but I'm genuinely trying to understand it.

That is a great point and one I've often pondered myself. For me it's probably because there were websites called things like 'Wild Camping UK' that almost exclusively specialised in spotting "wild" locations for campervans and motorhomes. Of course it does sounds more appealing than sleeping in a lay-by, but personally I'm not tied to it as a term - it just was "the term" when I bought my van so foolishly, like many others, adopted it. There is now the modern phenomena of roof-tents and tent-boxes which make the terminology further problematic, as they meet the criteria for a tent but are limited (broadly speaking) to where any other vehicle can go. Likely though, it's probably an adaptation of the most appropriate term for an activity even if it doesn't represent it completely accurately.

@@TheCrumbyBeard thanks for getting back to me. Great point about the roof tents! I suppose if it's remote enough and there's no facilities then I guess that counts as wild camping? 🤷🏼‍♂️ but then again, who decides what's 'remote' enough 🤔 I've been wild camping (backpacking) for years and I've seen the term being adopted by everyone that sleeps away from home in the last 3yrs. The term 'wild camping' was coined in the 90's to differentiate between us in the UK and people in the US that call it backpacking and also the people 'backpacking' across Europe for example, staying in cheap accommodation such as hostels. Definitions matter otherwise words have no meaning and a lot of the old school wild campers are starting to distance themselves from that term and going back to the old terminology of backpacking now. When I go camping in my hammock, I call that 'hammock camping' and I also practice bushcraft and stealth camping from time to time which I feel are separate from wild camping. But again, the term 'stealth camping' has been hijacked by people staying the night in a b&q carpark in their car 🤣 I also stay overnight in my car from time to time but I car that 'Car Camping' 🤷🏼‍♂️ Dartmoor national park are now changing their terminology on their website when advising what they allow there to 'backpack campers' to differentiate between what used to be wild campers and what now everyone seems to call it. I just find it odd how language changes in such a short time and I think it had something to do with the big wigs using the media to try to take our freedom's away and get wild camping banned by lumping us all into a large group both the people that respect the countryside and others that don't, into one big pot and calling us all wild campers. I'd like to get your take on this with you not knowing your vanlife as anything else but wild camping.

@@GrizzlyGaz in general I find the brazen approach of many vanlife "wild" campers to be too much, resulting in disgruntled locals and hoards of bad press. I feel like I have a very strict personal code as to where is appropriate to stop - vaguely speaking following the wild camping rules followed in Norway and other parts of Scandinavia - but this is just what I feel is appropriate, and with that take "leave no trace" very seriously. But I also suppose my reasons for making trips like that are very different to many; I am completely not averse to paying a premium for a campsite, in fact when I find one that I like, I use it every time I'm in that area to support local businesses. But, I have three large dogs that are not welcome on all campsites - and even if they are it can be a frantic time managing their experience - so wild spots provide us with some genuinely relaxing holiday time. Language changes often; and as a literary fan I also often struggle with the misinterpretation of established terminology as you do here - so I'll do my best to clarify more accurately when I talk about it publicly going forward. Like you I do really worry about the abuse of nature by those just seemingly looking for a cheap holiday or to heighten their social media following, but I also suspect that a lot of this has now peaked due to covid and we're on a downward slope. I was in the Scottish Highlands a month ago, peak school holiday season, and the number of people camping in their vans in lay-bys and car parks, whilst still high, was massively reduced from any time since post 2018. So fingers crossed the trend is in decline and those of use who genuinely appreciate the nature we stay in, can undo some of that bad press.

@@TheCrumbyBeard I'm glad you hold the same values as most of us who use the countryside responsibly and it's also been pleasant conversing with someone who doesn't get offended when talking about this topic. Usually when it's brought up people start ranting about how they can do whatever they want and call it whatever they want, which is fine, I just wanted to have a civil conversation about it. Thanks for your time and I hope the channel does really well for you 👍
