My biggest issue with the "is it okay to copy" debate is that it generalizes a massive topic; if you're copying something exactly with no variation and selling that for a profit without crediting the original than that's illegal but a five year old copying a drawing at school is encouraged.... It's too big to ask for a yes or no answer!! Personally, I sometimes copy art, both for enjoyment or as a way to practise different styles, and either don't post it online or give credit to the artist if I do and tag them were possible :)

@@CosmicSpectrumArt I still think that it doesn't exist. We aren't static creatures. The problem with finding your art style is that when you have it you stop practicing or evolving because you think you reached perfection. My art style is totally different from years ago. Could you say that something remains from all that? I don't think so, although people senses something, I can't notice it. Some people have more than one style, which is recommending, because when you gotta apply for a job, they wouldn't be interested in your precious style as your ability to copy others. At least that's how it works on animation. Maybe then, when you reach certain status, your style will be getting attention.

Art style are kind of based on references mixed in with things that aren't much in perspective that we learned on and about until we kind of crafted it into our own. Its kind of like making an effort through our work and through inspiration. Im on 50/50 with the "artstyle doesn't kind of exist trend" still im a bit confused on that even now. But it really depends how we solefully believe in. Art is wider than just an "artstyle" and its more of an extravagant quantity of evolving and improvement.

Your style doesn't have to follow you to still have one. A lot of artists have a reoccurring way they draw certain things. For example, DrawingWiffWaffles has a prominent style, something you can depict from the way everyone else draws. I believe everyone has an at style, it's what makes your drawings unique. Your art will evolve and grow, but so will your style. The art style you have now, may not be the style you have 5 years from now, but at that time, it'll be YOURS and the way you draw things. You don't suddenly stop evolving and trying to improve just because you found your art style, everything improves over the years.

I agree with the ''my art doesn't define me as a person'' part. Mostly of the time people assumes things from you according to your art/artstyle. Like... ''Ooh, they must be such a pure person because their art is wholesome'' or ''they must be a psychopath if they draw gore''. Or even ''you are a good person because you are a good artist''. Some days I draw body horror, sometimes I draw wholesome stuff or spicy stuff. It doesn't define my real character, only people that knows me irl can decide that.

This video is perfect in that you discuss style and at the same time do a dtiys of the artist that I put on a pedestal for her style. I'm currently in this (bad) state of mind where no one holds a candle to Loputyn; her use of white line, graphite line with watercolor along with her subdued color pallet, sexual, innocent-evil, bittersweet, witchy themes are THEE best to me in my current state. There is no other illustrator's work I feel even comes close to being as charming to me. I know it's not a good thing to feel this way but I've felt this way for quite some time now. I also really feel you when you talk about how some artists (like loputyn) can make such coherent work-- they have this super memorable style that has carried through years and years of their work, that they have made and used in their novels for. On the one hand style is like putting rules on your art work, but it's also sort of key for success as an illustrator esp on social media. I find it hard. On the one hand I feel like essentially style is an accumulation of all the styles and art you like and study, but sometimes those styles are at odds with each other. That's why I got on this bad groove of taking too much from loputyn's style. You say in your video that if you look hard enough though you will find something you don't like about everyone's work or style but I just totally don't find that true about Loputyn. I am not that into wolves but everything she makes is amazing, even work that she herself criticizes from years ago for having poor anatomy. Even with poor anatomy, all her work has excellent design and colors.

1. My morning had been blessed! I've been looking forward to this one since you said you recorded it on Instagram. 😭😭😭 2. This entire conversation really spoke to me on a very personal level! Like it's hard for me to put it into words. Especially the part about the self-doubt when you're feeling low. I went through that hard last year that it nearly destroyed my love for art. This ungodly pressure that you put on yourself to be perfect for some unknown person, and that person ends up being you and you're never satisfied because deep down you always know that you could do better. Man, you are right, that's when things get toxic and you need to walk away for a while and revaluate that you are not your art. This sounds weird to say because you never want anyone to go through that feeling, but it's so nice and inspiring to know that you're not the only one that goes through that!! It's amazing to know that an artist that you look up to so much also has moments of self-doubt and a level they're trying to achieve as well. You are an inspiration! You're my inspiration! Thank you for talking about this.❤❤❤

Thank you!! It is super common for artists to go through stuff like this... tbh I think an artist who never deals with these weird self-worth in relation to art issues is an anomaly. Which is sad 8( I still struggle with that from time to time, and especially considering that often if you do something like drawing a lot at school or other public places growing up, you end up getting a lot of attention because of that and it's sometimes hard to separate your own self-worth from your artwork. The worst is when you start to wonder if people talk to you or like you only because they like your art or something hahaha yikes. We're all in this together though hehe

I may be a little late, but I realized that I was unconsciously doing what you explained in the first part. I was slowly getting better and I didn't know why, so I looked back at all my sketchbooks, and sometimes I noticed little notes with what looked like URLs. So I searched them up and there were some artists that I clearly took inspiration or little details from. I adapted so many little things into my hand that now come naturally when I sketch. There were also some notes on how to change things, on things that I found cute but didn't like on my own style.

Hi! I just wanted to say thanks for voicing your thoughts about art and development. I'm approaching my final years of schooling for art and it's something I've been struggling with, like why I can't just stick to one thing and market it. I definitely resonate with your thoughts about how you want to try everything too and sometimes it feels like some kind of disorder, and even using the amount of art I produce as some sort of identity. It's really comforting to know that someone else has gone through these things too! ♥

I often struggle with wondering if I'd be a lot more successful if I marketed one thing >_> BUT on the same hand, I haven't really had trouble with work and it's been a steady increase for a few years now, so I guess everyone can just carve their own path! I think marketing 1 thing is probably safer, but I'm just happy to be able to make a living doing different stuff xD

As a person who likes to experiment when cooking, your recipe metaphor is actually REALLY accurate. You'll start out by following a recipe to a T, then as you get better, you start looking at new dishes. Slowly you find what ingredients and cooking methods you personally enjoy, and you think "what if I made THIS dish but with THIS little twist?" You try it, you get your results, and weather or not its a GOOD result, you start experimenting more. Maybe you don't have carrots today, or maybe you don't like fish. Maybe you go through a phase where you just cannot get enough of cayenne pepper and wanna use every excuse to put it in a dish. Next thing you know, you're cooking almost entirely based on what you feel like doing, not by what recipes you know. It's a pretty 1-to-1 comparison when you think about it!!!

Next time you feel like you cant be satisfied with only one thing just remember there are people in life, including myself, who cannot chose even one thing bigger as in art, or sports, or career. I used to do a lot of art and i know how it feels to be low and not feel like you are choosing a "style" but the fact alone you chose to do artwork is a massive choice and you have stuck with it, and you can do many styles makes it that much more unique. Just some advice from someone wishing i had stuck with art and seeing it from the outside in :) GJ btw your art is amazing!

The part where you said your art doesn’t define you hit me so hard. As I suffered from this a couple of years. I had a terrible artblock because I felt my art IS my value as a person and it left me with Great Depression as my work was shite. I slowly but surely destroyed my self esteem with such thoughts and never developed my skills at all. Then one year I just lost sensation to everything and everyone and went back to draw random stuff .. i just shut down my mind I worked my way out to development.. I got so much better in a matter of months and now I can almost draw whatever I want and it pleases me now that the sentence *art doesn’t define you as a person* makes sense to me as it was a great struggle in my life.... Thank you for this video. It made me feel better about my downfalls in the past ..

Hey! I've been following your Instagram for a while now and I just found your channel! And I love your coloring style! As for me, I don't think I've had a crisis about my art style, since I started young as well. I wasn't serious back then and my art was improving as I continued drawing, but I didn't think too much of it. But now that I've kinda noticed my style, I look to all my favorite artists and their amazing styles, and when I compare it to mine it feels kinda bland, even though a lot of people (including myself) love my art style. But it just makes me feel like I need I do something extra with my art. There's nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself more though. 😄

I have struggled with style. I guess you could say I am now, since I'm a teenager. I've been drawing seriously for five years, but I'm still relatively new and discovering myself as an artist. Especially when I wanted to stop drawing with the anime style, it was so upsetting when I still saw anime influence in my, because I didn't want to make "anime" art, I wanted my stuff to emulate me. I've come to accept that it's obviously going to influence me, along with other artists and musicians. I think it's also hard to balance style with anatomy, because I believe that something can look incredible if the anatomy isn't the best but the design is great, and I think some more people need to learn this. That's how I see things, and I think that'd help new artist out A LOT. It really helped me.
@CosmicSpectrumArt
@CosmicSpectrumArt 4 жыл бұрын
You sound like you have a very good grip on things! I know exactly what you mean about the anime style pigeon hole too. I still struggle with that because I got so much criticism for it when I was younger. I always have a negative gut reaction when people point out that my style looks like anime, and it's so annoying to deal with.. but I just constantly have to remind myself that they don't mean it in a negative way >_> And yesss! Design is absolutely more important than knowledge of anatomy imo. I think knowledge helps, but a good sense of design will usually trump it. In my personal experience, I didn't study anatomy until I got to college, and as it turns out I had a good grasp of it based on 'design' decisions I've made by trial and error for years, learning anatomy just helped reinforce things.

I do however struggle with certain aspects of my art style like, for example how I draw hair/hairstyles and sometimes color combinations. But I am working on how I approach these difficulties and am working on further develop in my areas of difficulties. In general I'd look towards other people's art and really try to define what you find attractive about that certain style/aesthetic. By recognising these things and adapting them into your art/style you can develop your style further. In general I'd say not to give up and keep working on your art

I recently came to really feel the connection between oneself -finding our identity, what we like and dislike, who we are - and his/her art style. I knew it, everyone say it, but to really feel it... To me art style is and has always been that thing that you can't pinpoint and explain, that organic thing and feel which is in how you hold you pencil dn draw/paint. Like in writing, a style is more than "making very long sentences" it's ineffable (don't know if the English words the same... So : Something you can't describe with words). I'm lost with myself, my image, what image I want to give to other, what feels best to me, etc. After a diagnosis, and the fall of years of masking. And I'm lost with ky art style but also what I want to produce, draw, paint, it's not that much my style than the image I want to give : The illustrator of cute pony, with neutral/earthy tones, more illustrative, or someone more in the conceptual abstract, more harsh, etc. In the end my style is my style, I know what I really like, which is not what I'm best at would say someone else, but... I'm lost, I'm still lost. And when looking at it's the mirror of my identity struggles. I could do both would be the answer ha ha. I'm just afraid of the balance... Like for my identity. I could be anything, many contrary things, the balance is what I'm afraid of, in relation to other, how and what and who they'll perceive. If I show always one facet and never the other... I have to show them the different facet, with balance, so I won't have to face a "but I thought you were that person !". Or in art "but... I thought you were an illustrator of cute ponies not someone drawing abstract conceptual strange things ?". I feel that pressure with art and social media and style, as a big advice for social media and art is to be consistent with your subject... But it's in fact me, (why you are sensitive to one rule and not another one can say a lot about you !). In the end I have my style. It's not something you choose. It's there. So the problem is maybe not really the art style, and I'm talking for a lot of people, saying "I have troubles with my art style" well maybe not, maybe you have some troubles with what you want to present, your image, peer pressure… what idea you have of you, your subject, etc etc.

Hang in there! I can relate very well, I went through a lot of the same, and still think about these things from time to time. I think to me the most helpful has been to really let it sink in that you don't have to be anything. I think sometimes categorization gets out of control and people may forget that at the end of the day categorization isn't absolute. It definitely helps to narrow things down and make sense of things, but everything is still individual in the end and every single person is completely different from one another. People like patterns and predictability, which is why the most common advice for building social media is to be consistent and predictable, it works. But when it comes to your personal life, i think if you really accept yourself as someone who can't and shouldn't be categorized, it will make life a lot easier :)

Your style is absolutely stunning I hope to learn more from you as I did from this video. Your recipe analogy and thoughts on copying kinda mirror and make sense of what I have been dealing with. It's nice to see someone else that can relate.

Wow when I look at your artworks they just look like lots of fun while drawing! It reminded me of time when I got my first watercolor paints and I could paint with them for days and I was so happy of every line I drew. I guess their name "White nights" quite well refers to the maaaany nights that I spend painting with them ♥

Hey! Thanks for posting this video. Very calming voice and content gave me a little new perspective on how to analyze what I do like. I always had problem with allowing myself to copy anything from other artists (ofc, intentionally, I am more than sure that my brain did it anyways). But your video helped me to frame this mix-to-learn mindset, that I want to try in future. I hope that more consious approach will help be develop my art more (:

i also can't stick to one thing, and I actually prefer it that way. if I repeatedly get to work one especific way I get the feeling I'm not putting enough effort and I get bored, like if it were an easy way out. which it isn't of course, but I can't help feeling like this and getting almost ashamed. am I the only one getting this feeling? 😫

I am always very critical of KZbin artists, like Jazza. I thought i would not like your art. I was wrong. You are very good at sketching and drawing. I feel you have a great style and great comp. If you read this i feel you may like "Mike Kunkle" he draws "Hero Bear". Great job!!!
