I agree that Sephora and other make up stores have the worst lighting when it fact they SHOULD provide customers with good lighting so that we can actually see what we put on our face so we dont make a mistake when it comes to our color match. They need to provide good artificial lighting that mimics the natural day light 👍🏼

I'm thinking I'll just start buying several shades and returning after wearing it for a bit. It's hard to tell in the store or from a small sample size. You might only get 1 or 2 wears out of a sample.

Sarah Ingerson in the UK all high end brands give you a good size sample.Estee Lauder give a 10day sample Clinique give a 5 day.Take a travel size little pot to the highstreet/drugstore and de pot a sample for your self.My foundation of life is est'ee Lauder double wear light 💚🙋🏻
@sarahingerson62027 жыл бұрын
I'm from the U.S. and I pretty much just shop at Sephora and they like to give you these tiny samples that give you like 3 days at the most and that's if they are feeling generous and if there's product left in the tester. They don't open a new one if the tester is out.
@andreadominguez17657 жыл бұрын
samples are for testing skin sensitivity, not "trials"of products, plus product won't last lost in those jars, so even if you got 10, it wouldn't work as well or the same. so.. that's what the return policy is there for.

My chest is like 2 shades darker than my neck and my face is bright red so it's impossible for me to find a shade for each park of my body😂 I personally match the foundation to my chest because it's easier to blend the makeup on your face and down your neck, versus blending the shade all over your entire chest

THIS TOPIC IS SO FRUSTRATING! 90% OF THE FOUNDATIONS IN STORES FOR PALE SKIN HAVE PINK UNDERTONES
@michaelaallen95097 жыл бұрын
Giulianamcg this was my exact problem! I have very pale skin but yellow undertones. I recently took a trip to Korea and found that the colors PERFECTLY match my skin tone, without looking too pink or orange. This is probably because a lot of the makeup here is made for women with pale skin and more yellow in their complexion. Also, the coverage of the cushion foundation I purchased is so natural and flawless looking. Needless to say, I won't be purchasing any American foundations from here on out lol. Most Korean products can be found online too :)

When you look at the whole body position of neck, whole jawline & shoulders, it looks too much lighter on her face than on her body ... Pale, like grayed out. So then your face doesn't go matching your body, and that's not a glowing color naturally. So it may not be the perfect shade of foundation for her. I hope this somehow helps, even though the video was very long ago lol.

I have light olive skin (by olive, I mean I have greenish undertones). I use Giorgio Armani Lasting (NOT Luminous) in 4.5, and it seems to match surprisingly well. I've also had luck with one of the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizers, I think in the shade Sand (I could be wrong). Koh Gen Do 213 and MUFE 117 work, too. Custom Cover Drops in G20 and Bourjois Healthy Mix 52 (NOT the serum) might also work. For those who wonder if you might have olive undertones, generally warm/yellow foundations look too orange on you (or just "off") and cool/pink foundations will look too pink. Bronzers look reddish, too. I'm of a Mediterranean descent, which I heard makes someone more likely to have olive undertones.
@starflash22308 жыл бұрын

Thank you so much for this! I always get a "gray and dirty" look with most foundations that should have been my color match. This is really really helpful!
@anindhitasoekowati34225 жыл бұрын
Watched this at least 3 times before, and today I finally understand completely what you're saying. The first time I watched this video, I thought I was a warm-neutral medium. Then I tried Milani foundation and it's too grey on me. Just like you said, muddy... After that, I thought I was a warm tan. Then I bought some local foundation with those specs, and I look orange, the color's too dark too. Only when I thought my search was coming to an end, when I thought I was a yellow - medium, I found out that yellow undertones look too yellow on me, while the medium was spot on. The journey stops when I realized I'm a medium olive girl! LOL! L'Oreal 475 Sun Beige fits me perfectly, a little too red compared to my whole body, but just enough to bring life back to my face. Though I cannot spot conceal with it, it'll look red-ish. Hence, my spot concealer color would be a little more yellow... Anyway, thanks Melissa! I finally know my color! LOL!

Never test foundation in stores either, the lighting in stores gives ur a false look on your undertones. Best way to determine ur shade is to pick 3 shade u think matches u, see if the counter person will give u a sample and try it at home. Most ppl at Sephora can't match u coz they don't know squat. But they sure can give u samples to try at home....It's really trial and error when it comes to finding the right shade. I was wearing the wrong shade for the longest time ever, a friend would even tell me that my foundation made me look dark....i finally went up to Estee Lauder counter and told her that the shade I'm wearing makes me look too dark. She matched my skin and I finally found the right shade. What also helps is applying the foundation in natural light at home, take a selfie or many selfies and see how the foundation looks in the pictures...Now I don't have that problem anymore, I've found my right shade and that's what I'm gonna stick with...knowing ur undertones is great too, helps u shorten the range of shades to look from.

This was such a blessed find! I've been fighting the pale olive fight for decades! I've experienced ALL the problems you demonstrated in the swatch! I've been able to find peace and resolve mixing product, too, but all in hard trial and error. And yes, yes, YES, the ashen thing! Hundred percent! I have Mexican and Norwegian heritage, so I look pale and I have burned easily, but I find that I do tan as well, and friends are always shocked how ill I look when I hold a lime green piece of clothing to my face. I can totally see the thing you're talking about, though, with the natural - it's deceiving even on my own face to put that warmer color on, but yeah, unless you've suffered with that gray ashen sick look, the squawkers on your content sections just ain't gonna get it. Nice! Thank you for this!

This is one the best videos on foundation I've seen on KZbin. I feel like I fit in the same category as you where my skin tone is a mixture of all three undertones. Even when the employees at the beauty stores help me, I still get the wrong shade. The best thing I found to find the right shade is the swatch it on my wrist or jawline and then blend it out as you did in the video. I really appreciate this video. Thank you.

The natural looks like there is no makeup- like a strip of naked skin between two swatches... when you do the whole side, natural appears like you are wearing nothing, just perfect skin - your favorite color is definitely noticeable as wearing makeup, and yes, definitely makes skin appear brighter.

my face is kinda reddish, idk and like my hand, neck and face are complete diff color/tone
@PossibleBat6 жыл бұрын
If your face is more reddish than your body (I have the same problem) you can swatch either your neck or your chest (which is what I do, because I tend to tan on my neck on summer but not my chest) and avoid makeup that is cool toned because you need to balance those reds and pinks and if you apply more cool toned stuff it's just going to accentuate it, so you need to apply a warm (maybe not too much) but something with enough yellow in it
@katec7086 жыл бұрын
Ik this is a year late but I have the same problem. My face is not only paler than the rest of my body but also tends to be more pink. The rest of my body has a warm undertone/neutral that leans warm. I didn’t realize this for a while and bought foundations that have matched my face and couldn’t understand why it looked so damn pink. Turns out I actually had more yellow, warm skin and when I started wearing warm foundations it made my face match the rest of my body so well. I’ve found that the best place to swatch makeup is on the top of my hand or my forearm. Also, don’t have someone recommend a undertone for you if you’re in a store that’s low light and if they’re basing it off your face color cause they don’t know what they’re doing lol. I’d also recommend picking warm foundations over neutral ones because neutral foundations have tended to make my skin look dead if it’s fairer or dull if it’s tanner.

I think Mac's terminology is backward (I use to work there) because I also have a cosmetology background and pink is a blue based color, blue is cool, so therefore pink would be cool, and yellow has the fundamentals of orange so that would be warm to me! Just something about them I never got! Mac also doesn't have neurotrals which is think cuts out a lot of options for people
@mayrabenitez11966 жыл бұрын
Samm Vinesett I know this comment is a year old, but wouldn't pink be a red based color since it is made by mixing red with white?
@janitplanet6 жыл бұрын
mayra Interesting point. I actually Google searched it and found mixed answers - red and yellow both being classified as warm, but yellow being classified as neutral too. Also, depending on the shade of red, it can lean warm or cool. So complicated! >_< I think MAC should've just kept things the same as most other brands since this matter of color classification is indeed so complex already.

Hey guys! Just wanted to clarify something for all the confusion going on about what is WARM and what is COOL. I personally was going off the MAC color wheel theory/foundation labeling system where WARM = red and COOL = yellow. As if undertones weren't complicated already, the beauty industry also does not have a standard labeling system for what is warm and what is cool - each brand has it's own own way of labeling foundations warm or cool. For some brands WARM is yellow and COOL is red and vice versa... Just wanted to make sure no one out there is left in the dark and confused so know that I was referring to WARM being red and COOL being yellow in this video! Hope that clarifies any confusion some of you may have had! All I want is to help you guys out, please know that

Thank you for the awesome tips! My foundation tends to look pink on my skin. I'm pale and I'm not really sure my undertone I think it's red. The beauty people at the store where I live kinda suck and I've never got matched correctly before. If my skin looks redish without makeup and I'm pale am I warm or cool? Thank you again
@mnimdp8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica! If your foundation tends to look too pink, you probably have more yellow or neutral undertones. I also have that same issue. I have light skin and most "light" foundations look too pink on me. I always need to make sure I find one that is light with yellow undertones, because even neutral is way too pink for me. What Melissa said about looking at the rest of your body is super important. For example, I have a lot of redness on my cheeks and around my nose, so at first thought you might think "oh, she has red/pink undertones", but that's definitely not the case. If i bring my shoulder next to my face, you can clearly see how "golden" -so, yellow - my shoulders look (specially now after the summer, with a little bit of a tan. When you're very pale it's harder to tell). Do the swatches like she did, bringing it from the center of your face down to your neck. It's best to do them a little more apart, so you can see some of your natural skin next to the color, instead of the next shade. I find that by looking at the swatches on your neck, you can usually tell your undertone (yellow or red/pink or neutral). For example, if the neutral and red/pink undertone shades look too pink on you, you probably have more yellow undertones. If the yellow and neutral shades look too yellow on you, you probably have more pink/red undertones. The shade might be too light if you base yourself on the neck, but in my experience it reflects the correct undertone. Like, you can see the first shade she swatched "beige", it looks perfect on her neck, so it is probably her correct undertone, but it's just too light for the whole face. If that's the case, choose a shade that is a bit darker but with the same undertones. And like she said, ALWAYS look in natural light, that's the only way to see it properly. Also, note that she is basing the warm and cool descriptions on the MAC system, where WARM = red and COOL = yellow. Most of the brands that I use are the other way around. They call warm the more yellow, and cool the more pink/red. For example check out this Estee Lauder foundation on the sephora website, and the Loreal True Match Foundation on the Loreal website. www.sephora.com/double-wear-nude-cushion-stick-radiant-makeup-P410666?skuId=1848704&icid2=products%20grid%3Ap410666 www.lorealparisusa.com/en/products/makeup/face/foundation-makeup/true-match-super-blendable-makeup.aspx?&shade=W2-Light-Ivory-Warm Compare for the Estee Lauder the colors 1C1 and 1W1. And for Loreal, compare W2 and C2. You can easily see how for both brands the ones with the letter C (cool) are pink, and the ones with the letter W (warm) are yellow. They also have the N shades for neutral. So calling it cool or warm depends on the brand. Just try to focus on the color itself, if you are more yellow or more pink, or somewhere in between. Wow, that was long! Hope it helps! By the way, I'm not a makeup artist or an expert on the subject, I just have tried out A LOT of foundation throughout the years :)

If you have a foundation that doesn't match but it's the only foundation you have, how would I fix that with more makeup?
If it's lighter, bronzer can help. If it's darker use your concealer to brighten the center of your face. I've seen other youtubers do it and it works
@isabellazaa8 жыл бұрын
My foundation is a bit to dark, so I use some lighter concealer and put this on my chin, forehead, nosebridge an under my eyes/ on my cheekbone. It works really well to brighten the face and because it's a lighter color it also lifts those arias a bit.

You could use a bronzer if it's too dark on areas likes under your cheek bone, around your forehead. If the foundation is dark however, mix it with a moisturizer and apply a little. You could use a lighter shade of pressed powder in your cheeks because cheeks are the main focal point.

This would be a dream scenario where the staff at the makeup stores actually help you. I've experienced so much rudeness, example; where I explained what I was after and my skin and they just approached one makeup brand, picked out some liquid foundation and kind of went "here". And accused me of not washing my face well because the foundation looked dry and cakey on me when it was applied (hint: I have a dry and sensitive skin. Would have known this if you paid attention. :P ). And this is just one of many examples of me being very disappointed with the staff. So now I ignore them and just help my self by testing and googling reviews :P It's all hit and miss but at least I don't have to deal with rudeness and bad attitudes.

Great that you are going into mixing your own shade! I have the same issue -- very difficult to match my skin tone. A lot of people probably have this same issue. Thanks for covering this aspect of foundation. "Natural" - has a gray tone, definitely... even in your swatch. Especially when you look at your shoulders and body color. After you blended "Natural" out - you can definitely see...it definitely looks gray. Great tip - take a step back - look at the body. I agree, makeup artist should allow you to see what this looks like on their face, after the swatch test. Great idea! You are more "cool" than "warm" - "Natural" is too gray for you, but the shade that you are wearing is too warm, particularly when you came back with your makeup on. You need to keep seeking a better shade. The one that you chose, is still too yellow. There's a better cool than "Natural" for you, you may need to find another formula. (The one you ended with is too yellow and doesn't harmonize with your neck and shoulder regions.) Great video - you made your point. Thank you!

I really loved this video; it was very informative. I have olive skin. When I'm tanned, my skin is very golden and beautiful, but when I'm pale which is most of the year, I have very pale, incredibly yellow skin. The one issue I have is I've never been able to find a good match for foundation at the drug store. All the ones I've used are either way too pink or purely orange :( So when I do my makeup by my window for good natural lighting, afterwards I look at my face, then I look at my neck and that's when you notice just how yellow my skin really is. So having your perfect foundation colour makes such a difference in your makeup. Also, does anyone know of a very yellow, pale drugstore foundation? I feel like they're really lacking in that. You'd think if they're going to attempt doing shades light to dark, they'd try very yellow toned foundations since they have very pink and orange toned ones, but apparently not.
