I just fixed a sewer backup in my house. The toilets flushed directly into showers, was pretty gross.. Tried the 3ft toilet snake and plunging showers and toilets. Still didnt work.. Was trying to decide if i should rent a longer powered snake or call the landlady to call a plumber. Then I opened the cleanout and the clog was on the house side. As a last try I tried the plunger on it at the cleanout and it worked after a couple rounds of plunging.. I wonder how many plumbers would have admitted thats all it was and billed accordingly and not recomended a ton of expensive work.. Im an electrician been in construction 40 years and remodels for 10 most contractors are honest and fair but I cant help but wonder if I would have had a $500 or more bill to plunger out the clog..

Sometimes a clog in the main line can be cleared that way but many times it can’t. But it is possible that people have paid for a plumber to run a snake when a plunger could have potentially resolved the issue. We have had scenarios where we arrive at a house with a sewer backup and start running the water to realize that it is no longer backing up. Typically we’ll tell the customer to let us know if it starts again and then we leave.

How about being on septic?

The cleanout should still be within three feet of the outside wall of the building when on septic tank. Sometimes it can be hidden in bushes or buried below ground. If you know where the septic tank is then the cleanout should be somewhere between the building and the septic tank.
