I've read Cole on vision. I've read David duChemin on vision. And I still find vision to be a nebulous, amorphous concept. I take pictures because photography is fun and, frankly, I have always enjoyed the camaraderie of being with other photographers. I take pictures of things that I find interesting in some sense, but what makes something interesting to me I probably couldn't say. I have the feeling, though, that 'interesting' is probaby not equivalent to 'makes my heart sing'. Similarly, while I hear a lot of photographers talk about what they're trying to express or say with their images, that again is a hard to grasp concept for me. Writing this makes me think I am not very introspective, at least when it comes to photography. And perhaps trying to come to grips with these fuzzy concepts would be beneficial in my photography (and perhaps life more generally). So count me as definitely interested!! Having said that, I think something that would be interesting, even useful to include in the workshop is a discussion along the lines of the ways in which finding your vision impacts your photography, how it helps improve your photography or your ability to see photographically.
@thecoleandjohnshow72362 ай бұрын
What you wrote makes you a PERFECT candidate for this offering David. And yes, what you are requesting in your last thought will be part of that discussion for sure!

I understand exactly how you feel, because I struggled for two years trying to understand Vision, but it just wasn’t something I could grasp onto. I think I was looking for a complicated answer, when it’s really so very very, very, very simple. Vision is just how I see when I ignore all the other voices in my head. When I ignore the rules. When I ignore the common wisdoms. When I ignore the advice of experts. When I ignore the advice of my mentor. When I ignore the advice of judges and critics. When I ignore all those voices, and simply create images the way I see them and how I love them. That is my Vision. But you’ve got to be able to push out all those other voices and teachings out of your mind. And you must create “honest work,” meaning that you’re not creating for likes, wins, sales or accolades. Your heart and motivations must be pure, or your Vision cannot be present. And it doesn’t happen all at once, it is a gradual process whereby your Vision gets stronger and stronger the more you are true to it and the less you are influenced by those other things. And one day I just realized that I understood what Vision was! And that gave me great confidence to continue to create what I loved, regardless of how others felt about it. I loved it, and that was enough.

I've pretty much said goodbye to doing workshops, but now you guys have my interest in this one. The topic of "finding your vision" has been one of my goals for while. So, I for one would be very interested in learning more about this workshop. Plus, it's very close to where I live too. Oh, BTW, I'm not voting for the one minute videos. Love the 8-10 minute structure. Thank you both!

This is such an excellent and UNIQUE idea. Not sure the finances will be there for me currently but I am certainly interested. Wyoming is my favorite state so I know there will be something there to see and photograph. Meeting at Cole's house would be awesome. I would be sure to wear muddy boots, leave coffee cup stains on his tables (all of them), and eat everything I could from his refrigerator. Talk about a perfect workshop!!!!

Huh.... I've never gotten lost in Wyoming before. That could be fun! ha ha Unfortunately, travel is difficult in situations where bringing my dogs isn't appropriate. I have a very senior dog who doesn't do well if I am away for more than a day. He gets terribly anxious to the point of becoming physically ill. His name is Paver is 12 and he's 120lbs of lab/pittie love. Sacrificing some of my outings is a small price to pay. But hopefully this will become so popular that it's an ongoing thing. And as someone else mentioned, an online thing would be very cool! I would certainly sign up for that. I kinda feel like l have found my vision but I'm always up for learning more and going deeper. But why do you think it's painful, Cole? Not arguing the point and certainly there are moments of reckoning with oneself. Honesty with oneself can be hard. Dealing with the fear of sharing your images when they are so very different from the "norm". Otherwise, and just speaking to my own experience, I liken finding ones vision to coming home to oneself and that is a joyous, beautiful thing. (And how many times can I use the word "oneself" in a paragraph? Maybe I should gestate with a thesaurus for a bit!)

I just loved this reply! THANK YOU Ellen!

How lucky is Paver to have such a human! Right, once you find your Vision, it’s a treat! But getting there… I found that to be a painful experience. Being honest with myself was painful.

This is the only kind of workshop I would be interested in. I don't do them myself and understand that vision takes a long time and it is a process as Im of the belief that vision is something that is made up of our identities and past experiences. However, it's a long way from San Francisco where I am and a 7 hour plane journey, (1 stop in Denver). So I will have to pass. However, would be interested in an on line class should you decide to do that. Best to you guys - im with dennis below, don't like the one minute videsos. Love the longer ones and the chat between you two and the subjects.
