Love your videos. I’m always trying to pick up new tricks to push myself above everyone else. I’m a mud/backer board guy and have never had issues with my grout at the ceiling or interior corners cracking. Maybe because the schluter is a soft foam and has more movement your more likely to crack. I do silicone my joint to the bathtub however I have seen countless cast iron bathtubs grouted in without any issues. Weight is strength.

I like Dap caulks. I stopped using Dap Alex Plus because of shrinkage. I now use Dap Dynaflex 230. Costs a little more but it's worth it.

They make sealer applicators. Some have wheels but the best I've used has a stiff small brush on the end. you set the flow and it just keeps the tip wet. You can seal a shower very fast with very little getting on the tile.

Yep, so do I, although I take the extra precaution of using "Big Stretch" exterior painter's caulk. Guarantees no cracking and no shrinkage.

I’m very cautious in my tile jobs to use 100% silicone on the ceiling to tile areas. Latex Paint will not stick to the silicone, creating a unsightly look. Since silicone is inevitable in reaching the drywall surface. So I case and base caulk that joint. I’ve even gone to the lengths feathering mud on a ceiling if the gaps is too great due to wows in the ceiling after tiling.

was just going to say this about the silicone on the ceiling joint. either do it after it's painted already or use the paint able silicone but GE. if the ceiling is pretty high and the bathroom fan is a good one you can probably get away with the Alex plus acrylic latex with silicone since it's only going to be exposed to humidity.

I always silicone seal non planar joints. I use the fugimeister tools because they give a lovely chiselled edge and you tool the silicone clean without spraying on soapy water or alcohol. Great video man.

The floor corners of my shower was grouted instead of caulked. Where the gap is big enough, I managed to remove all the grout all the way back until I reached the thinset, but it was more time consuming. Thanks To ensure the best seal and prevent mold build-up inside, is it best to try and remove ALL the grout (if you can) before caulking? Or is it a waste of time, and I should aim to just remove 2/3 of the grout before caulking?

I'm always asked by builders to grout between metal and drywall when the gaps big, or silicone when small. Painters caulk makes way more sense to me.

Why did you spray the silicone sealer with water and alcohol?

First mistake, wen you seal with silicon you start from the bottom to the top, so that your surface does not get wet,wen it gets wet, silicon does not attach like it should. Second, on the top of the tile to drywall you never use silicon to seal it, you may use Acryl seal that you can paint over it, with silicon the paint will not attach to that silicon. Silicon its only for ceramics or glass surfaces and not for other materials, you should know that better than i know. every corner or surface that meet each other and are not ceramics need to be seal with Acryl, thats a seal paste that can seal and expand and you can paint over it...

It seems that you guys do usually complete A2Z remodel of the bathrooms including paint. If that is the case what do you use, or what type/sheen of paint would you recommend considering runny-steam-marks maintenance etc? I know mapei grout can have a sealer chemical in it. It says it doesn’t need to be sealed. But, when you get it wet it still changes color. So, it’s accepting fluid to penetrate the grout. Unless you use flex color cq or epoxy grout. I would throw some sealer on the grout just for added protection. However, most builder don’t seal unless the homeowner asks for it. You can always upswell the service to the homeowner for an extra cost. Doesn’t take long and with the extra money from doing it you can get a tank of gas or lunch.

You used silicone for the joints but said you caulked the outsides of the bathtub. Why the difference, why not silicone both? Also on the ring that cover the hole for the sprayer hose on the wall, does that get attached in any way? I've had to separate remodels and both times they were left free standing and on occasion slip down the sprayer hose leaving the hole visible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Silicone is awesome and can take a beating, but it’s very unforgiving to install compared to caulk. It will leave a thin film on everything it touches, no matter how hard you try to wipe it off. The alcohol keeps it from sticking when you are tooling it and excess material is spreading out.

Never ending debate. Grout is permanent. Caulk temporary. Imo. I prefer grout as 1st line of defense. Caulk only if grout fails. A lot depends on location and climate. You are correct according to many. I find it's personal preference. That said you're the best I've seen. Best channel for sure.

There is no debate, only people who fails to understand the industry standards and prefer to do it their way. In any guides including the tcna book, it is writing black on white, change of plane need a flexible component to allow expansion and contraction. Now I don't even understand your claim about grout being permanent and not silicone.. your must FULLY fill the cavities with the silicone, it is permanent and you will only have to replace the silicone on the outside every once in a while. I'm guessing you also don't belive in waterproofing...

I’m a silicone caulk corner guy. The main reason is that grout only seals fully against tile edges and not tile surfaces. That means one edge of a corner, where the tile tucks behind, will be compromised when using grout only.

@@goldfruitco6841 if I take your meaning of jamb by the corners of the niche where the wall tile is set behind the metal trim and meets 90° against the stone decorative in the back, no, those joints most installers grout to my knowledge. If you use an engineered stone sill for the niche bottom (see previous landberg vids) with overhanging edges some may use clear silicone on those overhangs as grouting it over the face of the tile wouldn't stick.
