How to Finish North South Choke (And Common Mistakes to Avoid)

Jeffrey requested some tips on making his North South Choke in BJJ work.
Primarily he wanted to figure out to do the North South Choke in the Gi.
In the video, I explain how I prefer this type of choke in No Gi. It's similar to a Guillotine Choke. It works in Gi Jiu-jitsu but it's a bit more effective I believe in No Gi BJJ.
In the video I show my favorite setup that I use in Gi and No Gi. I've also used this choke in my last MMA fight back in 2012.

Can you do a north souyth choke if your opponent is belly down?

Professor Chewy, I have a very brief question regarding transitioning from side mount to north-south choke. If you are side mounting your opponent (you are to your opponent’s right side), when you transition to north-south, does it matter if your left arm is your choking arm (around your opponent’s left neck obviously) ? Or can your right arm be the choking arm instead (around your opponent’s right neck) ? Thank you!

Is it more if a shoulder drop or a bicep squeeze to finish? I get into it fine but getting the tap is a problem. What is doing the choking, the shoulder dropping down or the bicep squeezing?

you want to drop your shoulder to the mat. If you have to squeeze like a maniac, and your arms are burning afterwards your are doing it wrong. Use almost your whole weight into that shoulder. Another trick is to turn your thump up, to use the hard bony side of your forearm under his neck. Jeff Monson has some good tutorials about this little "upgrades"

Hey Chewie what are your thoughts regarding the new "rules" issued by the BJJ federation regarding brown and purple belts being banned from teaching Jiu Jitsu? To add to that question what are your thoughts on Jiu Jitsu politics as a whole? How much stake should any of us put into it?

Martin Schroeder it will close a lot of clubs in the U.K. There is not manny black belts over here. Would kill the growth of the sport dead here.

I would argue that an official school or club should be opened by a brown or black belt. I think college clubs, high school clubs, could absolutely be taught by a striped up blue belt. However, seeing as how John Danaher took over coaching at Renzo Gracie as a purple belt, then I don't see a reason to fuss over having a purple belt as a coach. They are certainly qualified to teach beginner classes. People shouldn't be doing more than getting out of mount and passing guard anyway for the first 6 months and the basic arm-bar, triangle, kimura, omoplata... some gi chokes if you are in gi.

In MMA we often see rear naked chokes, guillotine chokes, arm triangle chokes, leg triangle chokes, D'Arce. But not many north-south chokes in UFC. Why is that? Thank you.

I´ve been wondering when they turn their heads to prevent the choke, can´t you do a "no gi ezekiel" grip and force your hand against their throats? Would it work?

Alvaro Wang you'll create space between your head and their chest by bringing your arms up to perform the Ezekiel choke and most people will bring their arms up into play and push off your chest/face/neck/anything they can to alleviate the choke and or possibly escape. Unless you're super quick, not worth losing the position.

gyaku kesa gatame is one of the most overlooked positions in BJJ. So much awesome in it. Great mount transitions too. Love this setup. I use reverse kesa constantly but I've never even thought of using it to set up a choke for north south, another one of my favorite positions.

I just wasted 5 minutes of my life that I'll never get back! Where does the arm that's going around the neck staying at is it grabbing your ghee is it just laying Palm up on the underneath of your belly?

J Star he clearly said you use the S grip and squeeze. If not using the S grip for some reason put your choking hand thumb up so your arm under his neck is as sharp and uncomfortable as possible
