Want a few tips on finishing the Triangle Choke in BJJ whether you're a tall lanky person or a stocky thick legged person? Then this video should be helpful to you!
Recently my good friend, training partner and "little brother" Chad Hardy was in town teaching a seminar at my gym. And while he was here I wanted to do a video with him. And if you know anything about Chad, he's got a killer triangle choke. And he's got a ton of tricks on finishing it.
In this video we use our buddy Chris as the uke and Chad and I show different options to help you finish your Triangle Chokes. We show them from the vantage point of being a little shorter with thick legs. I'm not short by any stretch. But I'm also not blessed with long legs. I actually have a fairly long torso.
Then Chad comes in and shows how a tall lanky person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu could finish the submission and gives a few easy to implement details.
If you'd like to see more of what Chad is up to, head on over to his channel at:
/ @chadthebeasthardy
While we don't go over any setups, I think that anyone who gets into the Triangle position but is unable to finish will find some helpful tips in this video. They're easy adjustments you can immediately throw into the mix.
Hope this video is helpful!

Great detail on angling the knee and ankle outward for the shorter/stocky person version. I also like Chad's detail on adjusting the triangle to the size of the partner @4:44. I think a good comparison would be adjust it like a pair of slip joint pliers.

Good detail for stocky build, I've learned, is to underhook the arm not trapped as I'm pulling down my ankle with my other arm. This creates the best angle for me. I'm practically looking thru thier ear. Then lock it up.

Also, if the triangle fails, or the person push their shoulder through, you can always reverse the triangle or the “lock” part of the triangle. Meaning, imagine your regular triangle finish (lets say right leg under left knee). While keeping pressure and holding on to the arm, place your left leg under your right knee, it doesnt have to be deep at all, squeeze your legs and push the head down (I know, it looks weird, but still works and you’ll suprise people with that!)

Any chance you give your top 3 most effective takedowns (gi or no gi) for someone with no judo or wrestling background? I am a blue belt and know a couple of the basic gracie self defense takedowns. I have also started working on a basic single leg with my instructor. We barely do any sparring from standing at my gym and I know that this is the weakest part of my game. I want to be as efficient and focused as possible going forward with my takedown training. Thanks for everything you do. I have learned so much from watching your channel over the years!

All of these can be learned very fast with no previous martial arts experience: Double leg takedown, Barcarr takedown (reverse double leg), Inside Single leg takedown (personally I transition to Round The Pipe).

I'm bad so take this with a grain of salt but I'm also pretty large, 250 lbs when I started. The guards that frustrate me the most by really small people who literally couldn't get their legs around me were shit with my gi like spider and lasso. And I'm not sure if the colored belts were just flexing on me but butterfly guard works pretty well too. Added bonus of that one is you can chuck huge dudes through the air.

Man I was 18 years old and paid the money to my coach. I would suggest either get a job or work some extra hours. Or. . . Potentially ask to do some work at a local gym in exchange for a class. or You could roll around with friends on a soft surface and watch youtube videos. You won't get crazy skilled doing this. But it's free and it'll be fun.
