Firing someone is never easy, but it's definitely necessary to keep the team strong. Besides our hiring process, this is one of the things that keeps the culture so strong at SPS.

Have you thought of a possibility where the culture itself is shit and the person being fired was targeted on purpose.

Great step-by-step walk-through of a difficult process. In my previous job as manager, we had a TSOP that we used and many of the steps you mentioned were part of that process. Some terminations were easy when it was a violation of company policy, but other cases required constant monitoring, following up, and a 90-day improvement policy I had built-in. You nailed it with the specifics of stating everything as explicitly as is needed from the beginning. We would record these conversations and follow-up sessions and always had at least one person from my team join the conversation. This is great to see a breakdown of the RIGHT WAY to handle a very difficult process!

I appreciate the thoughtfulness and care you've put into the process. I can imagine that there are some really awful stories of people who've been hurt by LESS thoughtful and caring processes. I know it's uncomfortable in any case, but being clear, setting expectations, giving opportunities, and supporting someone through their transition is generous and shows solid character. I hope more companies utilize this approach.

So your boss made the guy quit? Did you forget to explain the process on how that happened
