Congrats to Grandma at 94. She has such joy in her smile. The food looked so good. Lived on the Big Island about 20 years ago. My friend, Moke, would spear Kole and fry them in his wok. Man I miss that. Miss the food in Hawaii in general. Great channel!

Everything I see for cooking Taape and Nebeta is in the kitchen doing it in the oven or cooked up in oil in a pan. Do you have some recipes for cooking on the grill? Not everyone in my group likes fish and my wife sometimes not so happy about the Garlic and fish smell in the Condo when I am done. I have to make do with what the Condo complex or timeshare has to offer for grilling so I would love some ideas for the grill!!!!
@onfirefishinghawaii3 жыл бұрын
I totally know what you mean, about cooking in an apartment or condo. So as far as grilling Taape, Taape is just a white flesh snapper and is a neutral flavor. It can be made in so many ways. You can either grill it whole. but I would put couple deep slits on each side to help it cook faster and more evenly. I like to just sprinkle Hawaiian salt and pepper (lemon pepper gives it a much brighter flavor but optional). I would season the fish and let the seasoning soak into the meat for 30 min then grill. You could also do fillets, which you just lightly season with salt and pepper and when almost done cooking , you can sprinkle a little cajun seasoning on top to give it that spice and smokiness. As far as the Nabeta, I only deep fry it.... sorry lol

Hey bro I'm new to boating and the seas how would you describe those seas? Like one or two foot waves eight seconds apart??? I just need to get an idea of what a five or six ft seas would be. Thanks.
@onfirefishinghawaii3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob. yes i would say that... only one to two foot waves... but i would suggest trying to go with other people and on different boats to see what best works for you.... cause out on the ocean is a bad place to find out you are over your head... what size boat and what kind were you thinking of getting... also what kind of fishing were you think of doing...?

@@onfirefishinghawaii hey bro, twenty foot keyWest cuddy cabin walk around. Fishing out of of Hilo for now. Just got boat getting kicker. Bottom fishing mostly and trolling when slow or calm. Thanks, any advice is golden.
@onfirefishinghawaii3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobgreen6939 right on, congrats on your boat, that a big one. Yeah If you were on Kona side it’s a lot more calm and you guys lucky that it gets deep right off shore of big island, I know you will catch a lot of fish. But I think you should just try take a charter and can ask the captain all kinds of questions or try take a local guy out that knows the area but doesn’t have a boat, like can find a friend of a friend or Facebook cause I know going get plenty of guys that would love to go with you on a boat. But best find local knowledge from big island guys. Sorry I can’t really give you advice for Hilo Stay safe bro 🤙

Howzit, how heavy is your lead? It was my first time bottom fishing today and I had a problem where I couldn’t tell if I was hitting the bottom or not. It also seems like it might have just been drifting, and maybe not even hitting the bottom!!!! I know it’s a learning experience, but I really want to hook up!!! Mahalo 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
@onfirefishinghawaii3 жыл бұрын
So it depends on how deep and how fast your drift is. The deeper or fast the drift the heavier I go. But normally 8oz… cause even if the drift is kinda fast it goes straight down
@uhhZulfurs3 жыл бұрын
@@onfirefishinghawaii ho brah thanks for the fast reply!! What kine pole you use for 8oz? I just bought a penn fierce set up but the buggah only says up to 2oz lure. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
@onfirefishinghawaii3 жыл бұрын
@@uhhZulfurs what does else does it say on your rod? Length and action? I use a 9’ ugly stick med-heavy but that’s a bit overkill… I also have a 8’ penn battle II which is a med action 1-3 oz… and that thing can handle cause you not casting the lead , just dropping…. With your fierce , I think can maybe get by with 5-6 oz and you should be good. I just no like you break anything and blame me lol
@uhhZulfurs3 жыл бұрын
@@onfirefishinghawaii My rod is 7’ medium heavy , 3/4 - 2oz lure. I threw one 5oz on earlier but I was like brah I don’t know if this thing is too heavy just cause what my rod says. And lol I would blame myself for just straight breaking my rod 🤣🤣 I guess next time I’ll use 5-6 oz like you said, and maybe try and pick a more calm day. I stay on Maui and it seemed like we were drifting pretty major.
@onfirefishinghawaii3 жыл бұрын
@@uhhZulfurs yeah if it says med-heavy I think your good… cause you not casting it… If anything from the bottom of your rig to the lead use a med thick rubber band or only like 20# test lead line so if you get stuck can break em off and not break your pole… Cause should be able to handle even 7-8oz if you not yanking hard on em cause all the fish you catch weigh more then 3-5oz lol

Oahu, on the windward side... so for Oahu, the windward side is always usually choppy, however the north is calm in summer but crazy in winter and south side/west is nice in the summer and waves bigger in summer.
