I definitely agree with your assessment of natural colors in heavily pressured streams. I have been fishing Muddy Creek in York County below Woodbine, which a heavily pressured area. I had no luck with white, black, chartruese or orange trout magnets. I ordered a new 120 something piece kit that came with root beer color and that made all the difference. I have been fishing with 6 lb line because that was the lightest available at Wal-Mart when I bought it a few weeks ago. It really is too heavy, IMO. I need to order some 4 lb. That will work much better.

I agree. Sometimes I can get away with heavier line depending on the reel I’m using and how much line is left on the spool. But I hardly ever throw the trout magnet on more than 4lb anymore.

The Ville Outdoors question, what do you look for in a “good spot” when fishing creeks? Meaning fast or slow water? How deep should the water be? How wide of a deep area do you need, 2ft? 5ft? Any other descriptions of what to look for when casting to a good spot would be really helpful.

tmcdanne When I look for a good spot the depth I look for is anywhere from 1-3ft deep for creeks. The size of the hole doesn’t really matter but the fish usually stock up in the deeper holes with slow moving water right before or after moving current. Any obstructions in current like boulders or logs also have slack pools behind them that hold fish also called eddies. One indicator of a good spot is a clump of bubbles drifting on the surface. That is a good sign of oxegynated water that fish like.

Great video man👍. I go to a place called Mountain Vew Park in Grottoes Virginia. They have a small stocked trout pond there. I usually just use bass worms. But since there's trout In there I figured I'd try trout magnets. What are your tips for using trout magnets in a small pond like that? Like would I need ball weights or floating bobbers? Oh and I just have the neon grubs.

Kendal Myers Thanks for the support! In a small pond like that it depends on how pressured the spot is as well as the temperature of the water. If the spot is pressured the fish won’t be as aggressive so a slow retrieve with natural colors and slight twitches of the rod will do the trick, use that same technique if the water is pretty warm. If the water is fairly cool the trout will be a little more lively and will be more willing to chase a bait that is worked faster with more aggressive twitches of the rod and more flashy colors may work better.

@@TheVilleOutdoors yeah it's pretty pressured since its public. But the water is kind of a dark blue due to some kind of colored die. I dont know if its temp controlled. But I has does have some kind of loud box maybe a feeder or something. I guess I'll just use a solid color.

They look similar but they are actually part of a separate family. They can grow much bigger than creek chubs and can be much more aggressive chasing after lures than a creek chub would.

Luv throwing them upstream with a bobber (as opposed to a splitshot)around 30" up the line,& just let the current carry it along...I'm up in the Pocono Mountain/Lehigh Valley/Northeastern region of PA~no shortage of moving water. Love the drift tactic cause it can take me places impossible to cast to (without getting in the water) like under bridges (most are loaded with stone ya wouldn't dare walk through)... I typically find pigs hiding in the cold/shade waiting for a meal to drift by& these trout magnets get the job done consistently. They love solid white w/silver jighead this time of year for whatever reason.

Drifting bait iff the bottom is my go to as well. I live in the valley now but was born and raised in the poconos. Most of my trout are from meal worm with a slip shot or 2. Trying out the trout magnet set this Saturday on opening day. I have a lot of luck with floating Rapalas too. Stoked for Saturday lol

This setup can work for a lake or pond depending on the size and depth. However if the pond or lake has lots of vegetation on the bottom I would recommend using the float that comes with the trout magnet kit and place the float at a length that puts the trout magnet just above the vegetation and using a combination of a slow retrieve and subtle twitches of the rod

I rig it as a drop shot with a pencil sinker for deep pools. Cast to head of pool and slowly reel it across the bottom with slow twitches.

@@TheVilleOutdoors works really well. keeps the bait down even in faster water. rarely get snagged. I just tie the pencil sinker with a simple overhand knot. If the sinker does happen to snag, a couple of good tugs and the knot comes loose on the sinker. I use 4pd fluro leader and ten pound braid on my light rod for this type of fishing.

That fish you caught that you said had Spike on its head that called a creek chub. Directional a little Scrappers but they make excellent excellent bass bait catfish bait and others. And if you can get them big enough music for northern pike and it will tear them up

Yea that one was a Creek Chubs they get those spiky things on there head during the spawning season. I’ve livelined them for catfish in the past with good success and even caught some Flatheads using the Fallfish. Around my area of PA the creeks aren’t rich with bass so it’s difficult to find a good spot to use them for bass. And Northern Pike are completely absent from my area and we have very few Chain Pickerel as well.

10 lbs line would work, but you would lose some casting distance with heavier line like that. When fishing the Trout Magnet I would say 6lb line is the best of both worlds because you can still get good casting distance and it’s still able to handle larger sized fish. On my personal setup I use 4lbs line.

Mottel Stock Trout magnets can work well for juveniles and I’ve even caught almost a 2 pounder on a trout magnet before.

When you’re fishing upstream don’t you just have to turn around to fish down stream?

In some cases yes it would be better to turn around and cast downstream, but sometimes if I’m fishing upstream I’ll purposefully cast further upstream and let my lure drift downstream. This allows it to get deeper into holes where fish could be hiding. Casting downstream can work as well but in spots with more current it creates a little too much drag on the lure to get as deep in the water column as I need it to.

im a beginner and my problem was with this was trying to cast from the shore with the trout magnet....wasnt going anywhere lol using 6lb test i had to put a couple of split shots about 16" above the magnet it seemed to move ok but was probably too many weights.

Yea the trick to the trout magnet is using lighter line for farther casting distance I usually don’t go above 2-4lb test line when using it. You also want to use an ultralight rod to get the right flex in the pole in order to cast. Split shits can work I wouldn’t use more than one small one

For trout it’s definitely better to try and be quieter and move slower up the stream, but with seemingly little to no trout and mostly chub and Fallfish around noise doesn’t make too much of a difference. 👍

Fallfish are a species of chub, but they are different from other chubs. Fallfish are typically caught in range of the north eastern Atlantic slope from Maine down into Virginia. Fallfish are actually the largest minnow species native to Eastern North America!

Trout magnets are one of the best baits out there. It's the same concept at fly fishing with a float. By the way, are you using a go pro camera? I ask because it makes the fishing rod bend and twist in a circle when you don't even have a fish on. Very weird looking but good video brother! 👍🏼

i dont get it. im doing everything exactly like everyone else. i fished this lure for literally hours, probably hundreds of casts and not even a single bite. i see other people fishing and catching fish. what am i doing wrong?

Sometimes it could be the spot itself is just an unproductive spot. What gear do you pair with it. Heavier line decreases the casting distance and increases visibility to fish. Also would recommend a light rod for more sensitivity. If you would like more tips on working the trout magnet you can check out some of my more recent videos. @@TheVilleOutdoors i appreciate the words but i give up. its not just the trout magnet, its literally everything. i have spent several hundreds on different lures, baits, rigs, poles etc. nothing works for me.its all a waste of money. i spent $40 today on different lures baits etc. 5 hours out at 3 different locations and i still cant get a bite on anything. it doesnt matter. i trashed my pole and all my gear. i give up. i get that not catching fish is part of fishing and i was happy to just get out of the house for a while but now im starting to hate fishing, i dont look forward to going out and i would rather just stay inside. thanks for the reply but i give up

Whatever works right!? There’s definitely situations where heavier line works, in my opinion the lighter line is most effective for small streams that are often super clear and shallow. 10lb mono is still on the light side, but I would say anything above 12lb line results would start to decrease.

I’ve used that technique before and it works fairly well. In creeks like this where you have a lot of moving water in spots and not much depth it makes it difficult to rig/fish it that way. But there’s definitely spots where that rug works very well.

But when you get that deep pocket area you could also let it fall to the bottom and jig it pop it up and down and that will also entice strikes. There is no trick in a catching Creek chubs. You could use small little jigsaw like that you could use nightcrawlers red worms crickets whatever you can catch them on just about almost anything little spinners. I can go to the Cuyahoga River in Ohio and catch tons of them. Almost every cast. Don't do a instruction video I hate to tell you but you're not there yet. There's many other ways have you seen that besides throwing it out and real and it's 12 or just a basic things that you had already mentioned I can think of three to four other things that you haven't mentioned on how to use it and how to get strikes from it. Not trying to shoot you down I'm just trying to let you know from someone who's caught monster fish like 100-pound stingrays look at my profile picture and all from shore. Nothing from a boat. Big Northern Pikes, Muskie, catfish of all kinds, carp bass small and Largemouth. And many many more even 7 ft black tip sharks which are very hard to find in the ocean without getting out there in a boat. I have tons of pictures of all mind if I can post them I would. Giant alligator gar. Like I said I'm not trying to put you down I'm coming from a to hardcore fisherman like me people are always telling me I need to get my own TV show. How about kitchen and Landing 35 bass in 3 hours. And lost around five of them. And my biggest 7lbs 3oz. Smallest one pound. Can everything in between. I'm down here by the gulf in Texas I wish I could find some Creeks around here to do it too cuz I would love to go catch a bunch of Creek chubs again.

Hey man I appreciate the comment, but don’t think I don’t know how to do more than just catch Creek Chubs. This was not supposed to be a complicated video, I intended it to be basic tips and tricks to help a beginning angler use a cheap lure to catch a bunch of fish. And these are Fallfish not Creek Chubs and there is a trick to catching them because the heater is clear at this time and the spook easy. So spinners would not work in this case because they’re to erratic for the way these fish behave. If I had the money I would travel all around and catch epic saltwater fish too but don’t just go around comparing sizes to every fishermen on KZbin because you think your better than them. Yea good for you, you caught a few sharks. To be honest I don’t care what people say about you or what you’ve caught. Don’t tell me I’m not there yet. I’m slowly growing and there’s plenty of people in this comment section that like and appreciate my content. If your not a fan than go watch another video. I’m just a freshman in college living in Pennsylvania. But I will get to the point where I can travel and catch awesome stuff and I have the know how to do it. So far all Creek chubs. Who told you they were fallfish? I've been fishing 458 years fresh and saltwater grew up in Ohio dedicated die hard hardcore fisherman I still am. I'd like to know where that term fall fish came from outside of that it's fall time and you're fishing for them. Those are called Creek chubs look it up not a fall fish any fish you catch in the fall time is a fall fish.

A Fallfish is the largest member of the chub family. They are native to eastern North America and can grow to much larger size then creek chubs, up to 18 inches in favored environments. Juveniles can look similar to creek chubs, but Fallfish are more silvery in color and lack the dark stripe going down the side of the fish the scientific name is Semotilus corporalis if you would like to look into it yourself. So yes a Fallfish is indeed a species of fish and it is not the same as a Creek Chub, but it is in the same family.

Hornyhead chubs are mor native to the Northern central part of the United States where Fallfish are native to the Eastern portion of the states but more common in the northeast. Fallfish grow larger in size compared to the Fallfish and juvenile Hornyhead chubs will have a dark lateral line at the base of the anal fin whereas Fallfish don’t have that. Also Hornyhead chubs have a small barbel in the corner of the mouth and have 8 rays on the dorsal fin and 7 on the anal fin. The Hornyhead chub also has 38-48 lateral scales and a spot on their cadual fin where as those specific features are absent in Fallfish
