How to fit a sun awning or Canopy Here I show you how I bolted a sun canopy or awning on to the wall at the back of the house. I used chemical fixings as the blocks I was drilling into were hollow and this was the only way I could make sure it was safe and secure. I first of all fixed the support frame to the wall and then attached the roller blind to it. This awning can be operated by remote control when it is connected to the mains electricity or manually by a turn handle.

Thank you for the very helpful film, I'm planning on fitting an identical awning this weekend, my issue is that it's going to be bolted to a cavity wall and my worry is that the weight of the awning is going to just be on a few bricks, my plan is to fix, with multiple fixings, a 3m length of timber to the wall and fix the awning to that, unless I can come up with a better idea

I think your idea of fixing a timber to the wall is a good one and should be fine, I was a bit concerned as well as mine was on a cavity which is why I used chemical fixings for the bolts but it all turned out fine. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching.

Nina Hilger Thanks, it was actually a replacement for a large parasol that got bent in the wind last year. This is so much better and I can see us getting a lot of use from it in the future

Hey Michael, That's a nice looking awning. I have to chuckle when you state measurements in metrics. I haven't got a clue how long 3 meters is. As you may know, the US tried to change to metrics in the past. It was unsuccessful., so now we have two sets of tools and measuring tapes with both dimensions. I even have some tools in wentworth when I owned a Triumph TR-3. I'm so mixed up! LOL

Gary Fox The UK changed to the metric system years ago but I was bought up with feet and inches as a result I use both and don't really think about it :) 3 metres is about 10 feet by the way. I didn't realise the the US ever thought about changing.

Nice job Michael. I would also prefer to use the cemented stud rather that the expansion bolt. is there a means of controlling the amount of opening other than disconnecting the power supply? Thanks......Nigel

MuddyBootz Hi Nigel, yes the remote allows you to stop and start at any point so it can just be opened to what you want.

Nice job, Micheal. Know the feeling well when the bit breaks though into the cavity. I want to remodel the kitchen this fall but the walls were built with this clay type honeycomb stuff. Can't drill anywhere without breaking through. Not sure how I am going to deal with hanging new cabinets.

***** ve the same terracotta type thin hollow blocks inside my house and they are a pain!, I have yet to find a decent fixing for them. The chemical anchors I used for the canopy worked really well but are pretty expensive

These are very useful. Whats the weather like in Brittany? Is it a bit more predictable than in the UK or slightly warmer? Cheers. Dan.

I generally reckon it's about 2-4 degrees warmer, when I watch the weather forecasts on BBC1 a lot of the time the weather systems seem to come up the English Channel from the west and just miss us. It is a cracking week this week with clear blue skies and in the mid twenties. Had a leisurely 2 hour lunch today with friends on the decking area under that blind :)

You found a nice easy fix for the cavity. I appreciate how "Finished" your projects are when done. That is a quality I often lack in my work. ... Do you have a wind rating on that awning?
@oldtimer43
@oldtimer43 9 жыл бұрын
Land to House Thanks :) I haven't looked to see if there is a wind rating, good point! However I can't imagine me putting it out when it is very windy anyway so I don't think it will be a problem.

Thats true. If it were mine I would put it out and then go inside and totally forget about it for the rest of the day... then there would be a rare mountain tornado.... haha
