Now that the doors are fitting nicely, latch properly, and the new skin has been fitted, its time to work our way to the back of the car. Next on the list of patch panels is the lower quarter panel patch. Almost all Ford Model A's that need rust repair have an issues in this area. The owner of the roadster brought Matt all the necessary panels to patch up his roadster, but they still can have flaws that need to be addressed. Matt walks us through replacing this common patch panel and some extra steps he needed to take to do the job correctly. Let us know down below if you would like to see more videos like this!!

Matt, like others have said that even though you claim not to be an expert, your work on this old car looks great. Watching yours and other videos makes me appreciate even more that enormous amount of work it takes to restore these old cars. Well done my friend, I hope Aaron really appreciates the work you've put into his classic ride. I hope you and yours are healthy and safe and look forward to your next episode. Cheers from Tennessee.❤️👍😷🍻✌️

The root meaning of '"professional" is someone who gets paid for work. A lot of people get paid for bad work. In that sense, I don't think Matt wants to be "professional". I think he would do the job right whether he got paid or not.

Great job! I'm building a 31 Roadster and hired a friend who worked in the business for 40 years. After three days of watching my friend work, I seriously wondered how he stayed employed. His work was sub par at best so I paid him and let him know it wasn't working out. Initially I was freaked that maybe I bit off more than I could chew - -searched the net and found your videos. I now have the front sub floor braces installed, floor sub rails, B pillar bracket repaired and am now working on the trunk area braces. Really enjoy working on the car but honestly have watched the Sweetheart Roadster videos Ep 7 thru 12 at least three times each and really enjoy watching! Thanks

Matt, I'm up to 15:13 and ,so far, you haven't deployed any hearing protection which bugs the hell out of me. I spend twenty years in the Air Force working on radar, the cabinet blowers and and noisy antenna drive systems ruined my ears. I have tinnitus and hear hearing aids, protect your ears or look forward to stuffing something in your ears every morning and having that something telling you to change the battery at inopportune moments. I agree with Jack you do good work.

Hi Matt, I worked for an engineer who always said "if you know a little about a subject more than the guy next to you that makes you the expert" and that was good advice. Although I get it, the artist/builder always holds the bar higher for himself. He always can see his shortcomings where others do not. Great job the cars going to look awesome, Cheers!!

Hi, we didn't have MIG's in those days only gas welding. Lenco was as close as we could come to factory spot welds. It is amazing how much metal working equipment has evolved since then. One of the shops in my area (Rhode Island) actually had instead if tanks of acetylene an actual gas generator. Lime was heated in a brazier as needed. Thanks for the response, I wrote to you awhile ago, I built an exact twin to your '39 with a 272 6 volt engine. Thanks again.

Great to see you "carrying on" with old style metal work. I started in 1957. May I suggest an alternative seam technique. EASTWOOD flange tool (we used to call them stepping tools). A flanged overlapped seam is much stronger and in some ways easier to install. Please keep the tradition alive.
@IronTrapGarage
@IronTrapGarage 4 жыл бұрын
A flanged overlapped patch panel adds a pocket for rust and also doesn’t allow you to hammer and dolly the panel and adjust the shape since it is then double thick. I don’t like to do those types of repairs myself but I know some people do them. Thanks for watching

@IronTrapGarage
@IronTrapGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Torch is a very aggressive way to do it and tends to ultra heat small areas. That is good for pinpoint shrinking but in this case a big area needed shrunk so the shrinking disc is a less aggressive way to do it. I also don’t like shocking a panel with water or cool area as it tends to work harden those areas. Just my opinion but whatever works for you is the way to do it!

Great patience and attention to detail, wouldn't have known about the gap if you hadn't said anything. When are you going to pull out and wash and buff out that 34?

Great work. Wondering if on a car with this panel, the wheel well, and the rear corner all needing patching(as this and mine needs), would it be best, for stability, to replace the front and corner before the wheel well? You masterfully averted any disasters but just trying to prioritize to retain as much info as possible - like how the well it is tacked to the subframe. Long-time viewer rewatching some older stuff. Thanks for all the info!
