I've only been 3d printing for 2 weeks now and I didn't realize exactly how much I didn't know. I still don't even know what I don't know. I'm very thankful for your videos and everyone else's helpful videos. If it wasn't for you guys I'd never be able to do this.

I do all my sculpting and a lot of printing prep in 3D-Coat. One tool it has will slice the model into pieces like this but it will also automatically add registration pegs and holes for gluing the printed parts back together. Of course you can adjust the shape of the pegs, number, position, etc.

@@evilwearsgucci Not even close. Luban does essentially the same thing and is considerably cheaper ... but it's still not free. Slic3r and Meshmixer are the only free programs I know of that actually work for this, and I don't really like using Slic3r.

You can also use 3D-Builder (free) to add a cylinder where you want the pegs and then subtracting the cylinder where necessary

I had no idea that slic3r could fuse pieces of models together as long as they're saved and exported correctly from the creator. I was thinking though if your model comes in 12 different pieces and there isn't a full model to one-shot there might be a good reason (besides size) the modeler didn't include that. Might be a good idea to reach out to them and ask why. Awesome tutorial Frank!

Thanks for this video. I've been printing since 2012 when I got a MakerBot (I know, boooooooo!) and had NO IDEA Slic3r had that function and have been re-modeling things that were too big for the printers I've owned over the years. Call me dopey but when I've asked on Reddit/Thingiverse over the years absolutely NO ONE could give me an answer on how to cut models apart. I was actually called stupid for asking a few times and stopped even though I knew it existed somewhere. Thanks again!

Great video as always. One tip though, I have heard frank refer to this in every video he mentions super glue in, all super glue is cyanoacrylate. There aren’t really 2 part super glues. Or if there are they are all technically 2 part if you use an activator. Activators will work with any super glue, you don’t have to buy the same activator to go with whatever brand glue you buy. Or If you have left over glue/activator it’ll work with whatever activator/glue you can find. I’ve used mitreapel, 2p10 and starbond accelerators on cheap super glues, along with gorilla glues, starbond, and 2p10 glue And have not noticed any difference 🤷🏻‍♂️
