A carpet runner on your stairs is a great feature in your home and is really easy to install. Brad and Phil have done a step by step guide for beginners and DIYers to fit your own carpet stair runner.
In this video you will learn how to fit a carpet stair runner including underlay and grippers. The tools required to install a carpet stair runner, underlay and grippers to stairs which include; carpet stretcher, bolster, straight Stanley knife, hammer,, staple hammer and tape measure.
The first part of the video is how to cut grippers to the correct size for your carpet runner and install grippers to your stairs, including the spacing required for beginners and ensuring the gripper is the correct direction.
Then we demonstrate how to install underlay for a carpet runner, how to cut to size and staple to the stairs.
Finally, you will see how to install a carpet stair runner where you will learn the two methods to fit the carpet runner on your stairs, how to cut the carpet runner to the correct size and stretch the carpet and scrub the grippers.

Hi mate, great video ,sure it's safe only 5mm each side from grippers under carpet? Others are saying 5cm , I've prepared 5mm like your video , just on underlay now ... its the same stair set up so cannot see from the sides , 23inch wide , thanks in advance , top g

@homeimprovements Who did you get to custom make your runner? Was it made from carpet used elsewhere in the house, i.e, maybe leftover from the landing? Did you have to cut it yourself and send it off? Lots of questions but embarking on project to install stairs runner to match the landing carpet.

Stair nosing is the only way but that's more for commercial property's

Do you have to fit a stair runner from the top too bottom & then bottom to top? If the runner is long enough can’t you just fit it from the top all the way down?

That’s unfortunate yes if you scrub the grippers flat it will help take a bolster and drag it across the pins hope that’s clear 😁

Save messing with the tape measure on the stairs just get two pieces of stiff card and measure them at 100mm each then put them on each side of the stairs. Much easier 👍
